Yep, been voicing my frustrations with it earlier in the thread! Not much of an improvement.

Since it’s my first time navigating the website with new layout, it’ll take time to get used to it.

I just love doing the certifications and observing the charts. It pleases my little, autistic brain.

Am I the only one here that somehow looks forward to that more than the weekly OCC singles and albums charts? 😃

My Favorites of course

Wham! - Last Christmas (9x Platinum)

1,419,915 pre February 1994 units + 5,400,000 post February 1994 units = 6,819,915 total chart units! 2nd biggest seller of all time behind Mr. Brightside.

Madonna - Into The Groove (Platinum)

838,000 pre February 1994 units + 600,000 postFebruary 1994 units = 1,438,000 total chart units

Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams (Silver)

199,223 pre February 1994 units + 200,000 post February 1994 units = 399,223 total chart units (or 400K)

Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush - Don't Give Up (Silver)

138,431 pre February 1994 units + 200,000 post February 1994 units = 338,431 total chart units

❤️

Both "Last Christmas" and "Mr. Brightside" will reach 7 million units by some point this year.

Wish the BPI would combine WHAM!'s physical sales so the platinum status reflects its total sales. Same goes for Band Aid and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and all singles/albums pre-1994.

I've been in quite a Massive Attack / Tricky mood lately so have certainly contributed a recent 'Angel' stream, pleased that's gold. 💛

Does anyone know how close are Wham’s Freedom and I’m Your Man to get a silver certification in the UK?

I’m still shocked both are not even silver there

Freedom sold more than 700k in the 80s and I’m Your Man a bit less than 600k

Both are certified with Gold in the 80s

Also The Final is only 1xP how close is it to 2xP?

Thank you

They won't get a new certification until they hit the Platinum mark for 600K sales post February 1994.

As it is no longer their newest greatest hits album, streaming will no longer contribute towards it - and it will be getting very few physical and digital sales.

In fact, it might not have been added to much at all in the streaming area: streams from its 5 biggest songs contributed to Twenty-Five instead, the sales of the next two are neutralised - meaning only the 7 least streamed tracks were counted.

So we have to wait very long to get a new certification for the singles and the albums from the 80s

But Ladies and Gentlemen will hopefully get 10xP soon?

Again, that no longer gets streaming sales. They all go to Twenty-Five.

Yes unfortunately pre Feb 1994 songs suffer this unfair restriction and prevents true like for like comparisons of current vs retro hits from a total units perspective using the crude measurement of BPI certifications. The more certs a song earned pre Feb 1994, the more "start from zero again" units it needs to acquire post 1994 to earn new certifications.

An example: Whitney Houston sold approx 1.6 million units pre 1994 and earned double platinum for 1.2 million sales in 1993 for one of the best selling physical singles of all time (I Will Always Love You). Instead of just adding 200k units post 1994 to earn triple platinum, she has to accumulate 1.8 million post 1994 "new" units to achieve triple platinum and which hasn't yet happened.

Strangely, this is not an issue for albums as BPI appear to be able to recognise both pre and post 1994 sales for total tally purposes. I wonder why that is the case...?

Nope, this is way more exciting!

I think record companies were historically more willing to divulge album sales to the BPI and OCC, after all this where the big money was made in the days when they were responsible for getting their own releases certified. Now that the automated process has replaced that system they don't get to jump in with the big number album certifications like they used to, but when someone comes calling.... What has changed is that singles (and also individual tracks) have replaced albums as the consumer's main interest, but for record companies the album was more important before streaming started.
