Entry: Talking Heads – Heaven

A rare education in the music of Talking Heads was the lesson that @Severin decided to serve us all. His chosen noun is perhaps one of the most used in single-word songs ever!

Thanks for hosting this. Some great entries.

Talking Heads - Heaven - I picked this as it's a track from a band I adored back in the mid 80s. The parent album Fear of Music is my favourite of theirs and was the first album I bought on CD way back in 1988. Heaven isn't the best track they've ever done or the best on the album but I love the mood and the concept of heaven being so perfect that it becomes completely tedious. The version on Stop Making Sense is great too.

12 - Peter Gabriel - Intruder (This was the 1st track from my shortlist that someone else sent in. Glad I didn't send it myself now. Peter's 3rd album is among my favourite albums of all time so this was always going to do well with me)

10 - Ministry - Revenge (The 2nd track I considered too, although I nearly plumped for Stigmata as well. Whilst I like the early Ministry stuff, more than even Al Jourgensen does, his later shift to Industrial and basically inventing Industrial Metal is my favourite of his work)

08 - Wonky Alice - Caterpillars (Heard the name many years before but didn't know the band's work. Liked this)

07 - Queen - Liar (Queen's earlier work is underrated)

06 - Tori Amos - Hotel (Hard to argue with her work)

05 - Pulp - Stacks (A mid period Pulp B-side from the Gift years. Just as they were finding themselves. The A-side Razzamatazz is my favourite track of theirs ever)

04 - Ted Nugent - Stranglehold (Great song, horrible person)

03 - Doobie Brothers - Spirit (A welcome surprise as I'm not a fan of their stuff generally)

02 - Saint Etienne - Avenue (Always got time for Crackers and co)

01 - Deep Forest - Gathering (This takes me back. I'd almost forgotten about them)

Thank you Severin for a silver - I thought you'd probably know my entry better than anyone! I should have known the Talking Heads song would grow on me after the listen through, they are always an interesting band from those I've heard.

We shall reveal the true identity of @Chez Wombat next.

It was funny to see "Peace" in this contest as I just bought the single-CD this month - progressive house at its best.

Chez Wombat

Entry: Space Art – Onyx

Well he's not having a good start so far, but joint bottom of the scoreboard is this futuristic piece from Space Art, originally from the 70s and a very obscure noun to pick for this contest indeed.

23. (0 Points) Space Art – Onyx [Chez Wombat]

And with that another song leaves behind the wooden spoon club, but spare a thought for Herbs and Chez right now.

Onwards and upwards, we will go to @Julian_ next.

'Onyx' being on 0 so far is extremely rude x (even if they are burdened with the unfortunate affliction of being Fr*nch).

Thanks Chez for a point, sorry I couldn't quite fit yours in my votes. That's a hit-laden quartet of artists ahead of me on the scoreboard, don't think I can compete with some of them.

@Julian_ invited Peter Gabriel to the event and he showed up with this 80's track. Certainly packing a punch, but will that go down well with BuzzJack?

Tori Amos is threatening to take the lead away after that reveal, and Space Art are finally off the bottom, but there is still one more song yet to receive points.

@Scene has been patiently waiting for their turn, let's hear from him next.

Have been really enjoying a lot of the Peter Gabriel songs that I've discovered from the 80s top 40 sessions and this was another good one from him that of course doesn't get to be a part of that!

Not you all getting my hopes up in the thread x although I do feel most of my target audience with this is still to come, I hope x

This was actually just a random Reddit find and the noun Onyx was just too good to resist, it feels like a pre-cursor to the likes of Daft Punk and fits alongside the futuristic sound of Kraftwerk as well.

Tbh I do hope there's a surprise coming as the top 4 are all a bit too obvious, but I can't deny they were all good songs (Tori's in particular)

Scene

Entry: The Doobie Brothers – Spirit

Our listenthrough kicked off with this delightful little song, which @Scene himself went back and forth with until settling for this one. It could do with picking up some more points soon though.

And just like that Tori takes the lead away from the competition, but for how long...

Calling @matto will they pick up... yes I'll hold.

Much as I like the Tori song I don't think 'dark horse' would be the right word(s), seems fairly obvious that she'd be a contender I'd have thought!

Onyx is also the name of Alanis Morissette's daughter. #weirdcelebchildnames

That’s a fair point I guess. 😋

I thought Julian would have voted for Peter Gabriel. I forgot to allow for the possibility that it was his entry lol
