Biography

The mid-2000s had no lack of garage-rockin’, skinny-jeaned upstarts vying to join The Strokes and The Libertines on the cover of NME. But not only were Sheffield, England’s Arctic Monkeys able to whip up a media frenzy worthy of their heroes, but they managed to thoroughly transcend it and become a rock institution unto themselves. Only 16 when he founded the band in 2002, singer/guitarist Alex Turner swiftly established himself as a songwriter of uncommon wisdom and wit, helping make the band’s scrappy 2006 salvo, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, the fastest-selling debut album in UK history. If that record suggested Turner was a natural inductee to the Ray Davies/Paul Weller/Damon Albarn school of British pub-rock philosophers, the Monkeys refused to settle for being a homegrown phenomenon and set their sights on global domination. By 2009’s Humbug, they were seeking riff-thickening advice from producer Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, while their 2013 blockbuster, AM, cracked the US Top 10 (and later Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list) with the sort of sing-along stompers naturally suited to the festivals they routinely headlined. But once they established themselves as one of the world’s biggest rock bands, the Monkeys proved they could be among its most adventurous too. On 2018’s glam-jazz concept album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, Turner wove a complex sci-fi narrative to address real-world woes like capitalism and media addiction, keeping his feet on the streets even as his band now orbit the stars. He proved that album wasn’t a total fluke by further refining its slower, crooned balladry on 2022’s The Car, echoing the luxurious drift of Scott Walker and Berlin-era Bowie against drowsy string arrangements and funky wah licks. Whatever the backdrop, Turner’s pen proves no less pointed as he settles confidently into middle age. - Apple Music

Grest to see The Arctics back with a NEW song. D

Yay for this staying up so high! A bit too "cryptic messages in cavernous portaloos" for my taste but still better than everything on The Car!

I think we can consign to history the 3-year rule for automatic resets - it seems to be anything but Christmas songs that will get reset with a 25% increase now.

As long as the 25% reset pushes it into the top 40…

Or is good for PR!

Biography

The country world feigned surprise when, after three albums of Music Row-indebted songcraft, Taylor Swift formally embraced pop on 2012’s Red. But no one should have been shocked: Any 14-year-old capable of persuading her parents to move from suburban Pennsylvania to Nashville for her career clearly has ambition to burn. And the thrill of following Swift’s rise has been watching her execute it flawlessly, largely because her melodic intelligence is equal to that ambition. Her early, youthful love songs heralded 2010's newly self-possessed Speak Now—which showed off her scathing wit—and evolved into knowing, ironclad pop fare that held its own against boisterous Max Martin production on 1989, her fifth album, titled after her birth year. Throughout, her songwriting has blurred the lines between the public and private, burying enough real-life clues (about, say, scarves and Starbucks) to make clear that only Swift can own her narrative, thank you very much, while still retaining a lyrical elegance. Though 2017’s reputation might have been perceived as a gorgeously constructed piece of dramatic theater—its attendant heroes and villains all real-life characters from Swift's public feuds—all that spectacle proved an attention-grabbing cover for her most romantic album yet. She turned up the romance even more on 2019’s Lover, but it was 2020’s folklore and its companion, evermore—ruminative, relatively lo-fi albums written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic—that earned her the Apple Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. She followed those up in 2022 with Midnights, which she wrote and produced with Jack Antonoff, and described as "the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life." In 2023, Swift undertook one of the most ambitious road shows of all time: the multi-year Eras Tour, which saw her presenting new and classic material across more than 100 locales worldwide. It was just one of many reasons she was named Apple Music's Artist of the Year for 2023. Swift returned to the soft, comfortable, bed-like sonics of Midnights for her 11th album, 2024’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. A study in extremes and heightened emotions, the record—which features guest turns from Post Malone and Florence + the Machine—is her most specific, candid, and unsparing work to date. - Apple Music

Biography

PinkPantheress is reviving Y2K for a new generation. Her sugary yet wistful pop ripples with old-school samples and styles ranging from UK dance to R&B to pop-punk, making her a versatile artist who already counts Ice Spice, Troye Sivan, Skrillex, Mura Masa, and Kaytranada among her collaborators. Before she became a pop phenomenon, the London-based singer-songwriter and producer (born in 2001 in Bath, England) spent her free time sharing on social media the songs she’d made while studying at university. Clips of early singles like 2021’s “Pain,” “Break It Off,” and “Just for me” went viral and hit the UK Singles Chart in the lead-up to her debut mixtape, to hell with it, later that year. Her 2023 single with Ice Spice, “Boy’s a liar, Pt. 2,” exploded internationally, marking her first Top 10 hit. PinkPantheress followed it with a feature on the Barbie soundtrack and her official debut LP, Heaven Knows. - Apple Music

Biography

Singer/songwriter Olivia Dean crafts poignant ballads and warm pop anthems, showcasing a deep sense of self-awareness. Born in 1999 in Enfield and raised in Walthamstow, Dean participated in gospel choir at a young age, before busking in the streets and eventually attending the famous BRIT School. Influenced by Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Carole King, Dean’s own take on music is autobiographical and vulnerable. In 2019, she released her debut EP, Ok Love You Bye, which delved into the challenging aspects of dating, like on the meditative “Password Change”. The following year, Dean dropped her follow-up EP, What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays?, a concise but evocative set of songs brimming with celestial melodies and confessional lyrics. Dean’s signature introspective style continues to grow more intimate, as evinced by the delicate 2021 EP Growth, highlighted by the soul-baring single “Be My Own Boyfriend”. - Apple Music
