Ordinary will still be top 40 by then!

  • Ordinary will probably be still in the chart

  • I think we can consign to history the 3-year rule for automatic resets - it seems to be anything but Christmas songs that will get reset with a 25% increase now.

We suspect that it’s if a song isn’t in the old rules Top 200 that they are looking at that they don’t get re-set, though have no proof.

It's only because its harry if Ed sheeran release it it would be ripped to shreds

I'd still commend Ed for doing something that interesting (and I do give him credit when he does something good), just because it's not a commercially friendly 3 minute simple pop song.

Le sigh...

Sometimes I think 777666jason is Bjork's alias. :p

There have been so many of these resets of songs that are supposedly ineligible that I think we can pretty safely assume now that that rule just isn't being enforced at all any more.

'As It Was' was still sounding great today so I'm perfectly happy to have it back in the chart (along with 'Locked Out Of Heaven' and 'Die With A Smile'). I'm really hoping 'Aperture' will grow on me but at the moment I'm thinking it's just decent, hopefully if he explores this sound more there may be other songs on the album that execute it better for me because I do like it in concept, just not sure it's come together as a particularly compelling song.

As with Bruno's 'That's What I Like' being spuriously denied a reset, 'Sign Of The Times' probably should be charting now as well if they didn't have some arbitrary cutoff for resets actually being counted. I'm not as bothered about that song not charting though. x

The new Arctic Monkeys song also isn't doing much for me at the moment although hearing it again on the chart show today it was growing on me a little bit. Good to see them back in the top 20 anyway, 'There'd Better Be A Mirrorball' / 'I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am' deserved. I hope we do get another album from them some time sooner rather than later anyway.

Random observation: Harry Styles is the first artist to spend time at #1 on the UK singles chart this year whose name contains more than 4 letters magic (following Wham!, RAYE, Djo, Dave and Tems).

What do we feel is the cut-off point for a reset? Is it more likely that it is on the condition that it te/enters the top 40, or is it more likely that it is based on whether it would, without reset, be in, say, the top 100/top 200?

It seems to be only if it’s gonna make the top 40. I guess they may be using a billboard style rule where songs that have gone recurrent (their alternative to our acr) can’t re-enter the top 100 unless they do enough to make the top 50

I don't think it's just if it makes the top 40 - others have been reset while entering lower, such as the Jeff Buckley song that debuted at #61 last week, after not being in the Monday mids at all. Starry Eyed also got its reset at the start of the year despite not being on track for top 40.

(which I appreciate doesn't help the confusion x)

the Jeff Buckley and Ellie G songs may've been manually reset by label request?

it does seem to me the automatic resets don't get triggered unless the song re-enters the top 50, which clearly 'Sign of the Times' wasn't on track for (it's not in the streaming chart top 100)
