I like it on a first listen, definitely it’s not No Tears Left To Dry (yes, that’s my fave lead single of hers), but I am definitely expecting the music video to elevate this from 7/10 to 9/10 at least!!!

This is beyond dull. It sounds like something you find on New Music Friday and think oh this is nice but never return to. It's so poor for Ariana standards.

We were just discussing if we were gonna get a lead! I’m glad that we are! Everything about this era has a little mystery so far like album title, single title, the photoshoot. I’m almost expecting

The taste, it's mine too!

Looking forward to the music video - fingers crossed it's good/makes the song resonate with people more.

^ 'no tears left to cry' is my favourite Ari lead too and my #1 song of hers overall <3 perfectly pitched in every way, maybe we need a rank the leads thread when the dust settles on this song a bit...

just seen that 'hate that i made you love me' has been added to the Capital playlist?! Glad Ari's back in their good books then as her releases were seemingly blacklisted for a few years, probably for a petty reason like not performing at the Summertime Ball lol

it's up to #5 on Apple now also

it took me a few plays to get along with it but i think i really like this now? i'd have preferred more of a bop but there's something nicely moody and dramatic about it, reminds me of the day before you came by abba

Hi so_afraid, welcome to the forum hi great to have more Ariana fans on here!

This is getting more of an instant first reaction to me than what yes, and? did and possibly even positions and thank u, next on first day too (although those two turned out to be growers.. yes, and? Largely just wasn’t for me but the rest of the album was)

I think I’m gonna return to this one quite a bit. It actually is sort of different from her as far as her leads go too. It isn’t a million miles from eternal sunshine era yet lyrically this is very Taylor in her tortured poets phase and that’s not a critique at all.

Ariana’s leads for me are almost never the best on the album anyways (no tears left to cry was the only case where it was) so I don’t think this is representative of what’s to come I definitely think single 2 may be the more commercial “pop” esque track as we often see from her.

I'm liking it more and more with every listen

On first listen it washed over me leaving no impression. Not bad, not good. Just exists.

i was like that, it crept up on me a lot tho. it's a very odd choice for a lead single but i wonder if she's entering her "nothing left to prove, f_ck the haters" era

That feels like the vibe. I feel like its another yes and? Where the album is completely different to its lead. Especially since she described this album as feral which this song is not

Why would she need to have to dedicate a whole era to her haters? Sounds pretty twisted to me.

(And welcome to Buzzjack!)

i never said she's dedicating the era to haters, it's a point of doing whatever she wants rather than thinking "this is the lead, needs to be a big thing" or whatever, she did that with "yes and?"? and got dragged a lot for it.

i think post wicked and movie success she's doing this more for herself, she really doesn't need to keep releasing albums and working to stay on top anymore

U.K. Spotify day 1 figures for Ari's lead singles since sweetener that I posted in the streaming thread:

  • no tears left to cry - 543,814

  • thank u, next - 590,304

  • positions - 541,170

  • yes, and? - 791,733

  • hate that i made you love me - 568,941

remarkably consistent in the 500-600k zone aside from 'yes, and?' although that was her first lead in over 3 years

It’s not quite doing it for me yet, I feel like it’s a bit boring. It’s weird because it sounds very ES coded, which is my favourite album by her, but it’s giving nice album track rather than smash hit to me. I’ve looped it a few times still, but there are other releases this week that have been taking my attention more over this. So for that reason I’m a little disappointed.

Bring on the music video tomorrow!

(has fallen to 302k streams on U.K. Spotify today so hopefully this will help it stabilise 🤞)

#1 in the Sunday update. I don't think it will, but I hope it knocks RMI from the top.
