Just for fun, this is how the Last 32 would look based on the tables after the first games: South Korea v Canada Scotland v Japan Germany v Brazil Sweden v Morocco Ivory Coast v France Norway v Nethe

Good to hear lots of boos at the totally unnecessary drinks breaks. Also good that the UK broadcasters are commenting on it.

I won't be holding my breath. Stand by for UEFA using it for the next Euros, including a miserable Thursday night in Glasgow with rain and temperatures of 15 degrees.

Africa - 9 of 10 qualified - 5 in 2nd place/4 in 3rd
South America - 5 of 6 qualified - 3 in 1st place/2 in 3rd
Europe - 13 of 16 qualified - 7 in 1st place/4 in 2nd/2 in 3rd
North/Central America - 3 of 6 qualified - 2 in 1st place/1 in 2nd
Asia - 2 of 9 qualified - 2 in 2nd place
Oceania - 0 of 1 qualified

Comparing this to the number we had at the last World Cup:

Africa - 9 vs 5 (+4)

Asia - 2 vs 6 (-4)

North America - 3 vs 4 (-1)

South America - 5 vs 4 (+1)

Europe - 13 vs 13 (=)

Oceania - 0 vs 0 (=)

So it's mainly Africa that have benefitted from the 48-team setup at the expense of Asia.

And if they still do 'rankings' based on overall points, this would be the list for the eliminated teams I think!

  1. Iran (3pts, 0)

  2. South Korea (3pts, -1)

  3. Turkiye (3pts, -2)

  4. Scotland (3pts, -3)

  5. Uruguay (2pts, -1)

  6. Saudi Arabia (2pts, -4)

  7. Czechia (1pt, -4)

  8. New Zealand (1pt, -6)

  9. Qatar (1pt, -8, 2 goals)

  10. Curacao (1pt, -8, 1 goal)

  11. Panama (0pts, -4)

  12. Jordan (0pts, -5)

  13. Haiti (0pts, -6)

  14. Uzbekistan (0pts, -9)

  15. Tunisia (0pts, -10)

  16. Iraq (0pts, -11)

England are always among the favourites in the betting at major tournaments. It feels like it may just be a thing in England itself and not in the World/Europe in general.

Just as an experiment I tried to search for betting websites outside of England and came across this one from Italy and the order of favourites seems to be similar, so maybe it's not just an English thing. The past 60 years have taught them nothing obviously 🤣
