  • Well done Australia, one of the first upsets of the World Cup. Turkey just didn't seem to offer much which is a surprise.

It's either USMNT defended well or Yilmaz just messed up with the last two chances.

I wish we could have had Australia and Paraguay both doing out and Turkey going through instead.

I had a feeling that Turkey were going to win tonight but I bottled it on the predictor and put a draw (and was about 30 seconds away from getting 5 points for it).

I read an article earlier in the day about these kind of scenarios coming up in the last group matches and how the feeling of jeopardy has gone from the final round of group matches compared to the Qatar World Cup and it was mentioned that the tournament could be expanded to 64 teams to avoid this.

World Cup 2026: The games that show a 48-team tournament...

Two matches in the final round of group games present the chance for two teams to simply play out a draw to qualify.

Turkey on the other hand decide to turn up now when the pressure is off and the result doesn't matter.

I tend to agree, I’m not convinced this structure has worked.

Is 64 teams to many though? I can’t see them going back to 32 either though.

Expansion to 64 teams would be a joke.

FIFA will 100% use the clunky permutations we're seeing at this tournament as well as the 'great inclusivity' as a reason to expand to 64.

I mean it would almost guarantee that Italy qualify.

Still wouldn't be sure on that. They didn't make the jump from 32 to 48 after all!

I think 64 teams would be too much. Really 32 is the most ideal number of teams but then the drawback is that new and unusual teams like Cape Verde and Curacao probably wouldn't make it.

Paraguay v Australia an poor game that was.

Absolutely, but I’ll take it every day of the week if it means Australia qualify for the next round. 🤣
