The top of the charts has an oddly stoic air to it this week with the top 2 remaining the same as last week which means that “It Feels So Good” becomes the fourth single this year to make it more than 7 days atop of the survey. Sonique sold another 109,000 copies to keep her crown and S Club 7 were once again her nearest rivals “Reach” coming in on a sale of 87,000.

So the debut solo single from Ex-Boyzone member Stephen Gately couldn’t keep its early runner up position and enters at No 3 (72,000), his single is a double A-Side “New Beginning/ Bright Eyes”. The former track was co-written by Simon Climie whilst his cover of Art Garfunkel’s 1979 #1 is taken from the current ITV cartoon series remake of the film, he’s the second former member of the boyband (who are on a hiatus rather than a split technically) after Ronan Keating. His “battle” with former bandmate Mikey Graham ended up being a rather limp affair with Graham only managing No 13.

images.jpg

The other four new entries line up neatly behind Gately and the best selling of them comes from German duo (and brothers) York whose second single “On The Beach” comes with a rift lifted straight from Chris Rea’s single of the same title (#12, 1988). Their debut “The Awakening” narrowly missed out on the top tier making No 11 in October but this does much better entering at No 4 (56,000), better even than Chris Rea ever managed on his own.

images.jpg

So the brothers York are at four and one place below are the sisters Atkins- Campbell who record as Mary Mary despite neither being called Mary. “Shackles (Praise You)” is their debut hit and features a sample from Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett’s “Don’t Look Any Further” which was in the top 10 just 7 years ago as a cover by M People. 47,000 people found it worthy to buy and nips into the top 5.

Pink (real name Alicia Moore) is the newest name in US pop and saw her debut single “There You Go” make No 7 in America last month, it goes one place higher over here by entering at No 6 (43,000). She was formerly a member of girl group Choice who only had minimal success before she went solo helped by L.A Reid and babyface, incidentally she takes her name from the character Mr Pink in “Reservoir Dogs” and not because she has pink hair we’re reliably informed.

Last year Dr Dre helped out on Eminem’s No 5 hit “Guilty Conscience” and now Eminem is returning the favour on Dre’s single “Forgot About Dre” new at No 7 (40,000). It keeps Dre’s album “2001” in the top 10 and announces the return of Eminem who has a solo single out next month.

Below these Bon Jovi dive 3-8 (38,000) and score a fifth No 1 album with “Crush”- all in all a success for the band, Britney falls 6-9 (31,000) and is now ahead of the track that knocked her off No 1 Madison Avenue who fly past her 5-10 (28,000).

1- IT FEELS SO GOOD- Sonique (109,000)
2- REACH- S Club 7 (87,000)
3- NEW BEGINNING/ BRIGHT EYES- Stephen Gately (72,000)
4- ON THE BEACH- York (56,000)
5- SHACKLES (PRAISE YOU)- Mary Mary (47,000)
6- THERE YOU GO- Pink (43,000)
7- FORGOT ABOUT DRE- Dr Dre Ft Eminem (40,000)
8- IT’S MY LIFE- Bon Jovi (38,000)
9- OOPS....I DID IT AGAIN- Britney Spears (31,000)
10- DON’T CALL ME BABY- Madison Avenue (28,000)

She’s done the unthinkable! Yes Sonique holds onto the No 1 spot for a third week! Not normally something to remark upon but no single has managed such an extended stay at the top in 2000 even though she took another 22% sales hit week on week (actually following a 44% cut the week before) to 85,000 which brings its total sales to 389,000 after three weeks.

Also, just as last week, the highest new entry couldn’t keep the midweek No 2 position and falls back behind S Club 7 who spend a third week in the runner up position keeping Sonique company. “Reach” sold 53,000 copies to do it and has sold 263,000 so far.

Even though it faded “Mama Who Da Man” must be classed as a success for Richard Blackwood, a man whose fame so far has rested on being a stand up comedian and TV presenter who recently moved into the world of chat show host with the “Richard Blackwood Show”. He proves his diversity by being a popstar now with a track which lifts the chorus from Junior’s #7 hit “Mama Used To Say” from 1982, Blackwood does much better spinning in at No 3 (43,000) but the two are related with Junior being Blackwood’s uncle.

Some had predicted that the new Travis single would be a sure fire No 1 hit, well that proved an optimistic prediction as it smashes in at No 5 (36,000). It is the first release from their forthcoming third album due at Christmas and is a guaranteed big seller given that the group’s “The Man Who” album is the bestselling album of 2000 so far despite having no singles plucked from it in this year having sold over 2 million copies so far. “Coming Around” does however become their third top 10 hit in a row and their biggest yet.

Interestingly the last British solo female to spend at least three weeks at No 1 prior to Sonique this week was Gabrielle in 1993 and the lady herself returns at No 6 (34,000) with a third release from the “Rise” album “When A Woman”. It is of course the follow up to the chart topping “Rise” which is the 4th biggest seller of the year so far so there were high hopes for this and it does the job in becoming her 5th straight top 10 single and pushes the album back up 14-9.

Birmingham trio B-15 project are riding the way of 2 step garage which has taken the charts by storm in the past year, “Girls Like This” features the vocals of Chrissy D & Lady G and comes in at No 7 (31,000). The B-15 relates to the postcode where the boys are from FYI.

George Michael’s previous duets with Queen, Aretha Franklin and Elton John have all been No 1 singles but his new partner Whitney Houston sees him arrive at No 9 (28,000). “If I Told You That” was originally a solo track for Houston on her last album “My Love Is Your Love” but now gets re-recorded and remixed for this single release, it’s Houston’s 15th and Michael’s 20th top 10 single.

Euro 2000 started on Saturday and that must mean an anthem for the competition for the English team! Step forward Fat Les who gave us the unofficial anthem “Vindaloo” back in 1998 which was only prevented from being a chart topper by “Three Lions 98”, this time they get the gig officially and “Jerusalem” gets the Fat Les treatment. Started out as a poem by William Blake it was made into a hymn by Hubert Parry in 1916, it was made into a hit single first by the Fall in 1988 (#59) but now into a much bigger hit with Fat Les new at No 10 (27,000).

York hold fast at No 4 (37,000) and Mary Mary free themselves 5-8 (28,000).

1- IT FEELS SO GOOD- Sonique (85,000)
2- REACH- S Club 7 (53,000)
3- MAMA WHO DA MAN- Richard Blackwood (43,000)
4- ON THE BEACH- York (37,000)
5- COMING AROUND- Travis (36,000)
6- WHEN A WOMAN- Gabrielle (34,000)
7- GIRLS LIKE US- B15 Project (31,000)
8- SHACKLES (PRAISE YOU)- Mary Mary (28,000)
9- IF I TOLD YOU THAT- George Michael & Whitney Houston (28,000)
10- JERUSALEM- Fat Les 2000 (27,000)

Not been keeping up with this for a bit, Gabrielle! I love that song such a Motown retro feel to it! 🥰

The heavyweight collaboration of Whitney Houston & George Michael doesn't pack any punches.

Trevor & Simon cheeseblock

Reminds me of the keyboard we had at secondary school, I swear it was a preset!

Muse were the best thing on over the two episodes.

Also loved that Angelic song. Seems I prefer the things outside the top 10 this week.

Just catching up with the episodes now. The first one was mostly naff mind… 😂

However, I did wonder what happened to the Stephen Gately performance? Unless I’m going prematurely senile (stranger things have happened!), he didn’t appear but his performance was shown in the countdown at the end?!

Oh and Daphne & Celeste already clearing everything that’s appeared so far cheeseblock

Stephen was on second after S Club 7.

I remember seeing P!nk there for the first time. The hair obviously stood out but I wasn’t too fussed on There You Go back then. I appreciate it more now but I’d have never have guessed at that moment I’d go on to be a huge P!nk fan 😂

I’m so confused, S Club 7 didn’t appear either 😂

The guide indicates they did, but my episode started off with flops from Len and Doves, before Pink rocked up!

Nope on my screen it was S Club 7 and then Stephen before Pink.

Len and Doves didn’t appear.

@Lee_J11 did you watch the first episode from the start?? lol

Unless the broadcast version is different to what's on iPlayer? I recall one of the presenters saying there was a different episode that goes out on an early Sunday morning (at the time in 2000 ofc)

I even went back to double check I had 😂 but yes I did! Very weird indeed!
