NBTSA hung around the top 10 for a bit didn't it! I always thought it dropped out really quickly like a lot of the solo singles!

I like 'The Bad Touch', the production in the chorus is very Pet Shop Boys. Not so keen on the lyrics although I remember it being talked about in school at the time.

Just spotted Sweet Female Attitude 'Flowers' too have to comment. No 'Oi Nathan!' here! Seriously though, I always thought the original 'Flowers' was quite melancholy sounding though for a dance track.

I remember 'Flowers' a lot from the time on music channels in 2000.

sadly i'm not too young to recall it😁- It had been around on radio for a few months before the release and I was desperate to buy it. It went off in the clubs when it got played pre-release so it was no shock at all when it went to the top!

I spent an awful lot of pocket money in these two weeks!

Some of my favourite ever dance records in the brilliant Fragma (amazing sale for my favourite No.1 single of the year) and the sublime Airwave by Rank 1, so glad this slipped into the top 10 with little fanfare on such a hectic week too, because it is a beauty.

I also bought Sash!, which is underrated and one of their best singles in both the ballad and dance versions!

And Black Box Recorder, incredible track and so unique, and Sister2Sister, which is fun Australian pop that went top three there.

I didn’t buy them at the time but so many classic singles from Craig David, Sweet Female Attitude, Sisqo, Bloodhound Gang and Steps. It feels like everyone was firing on all cylinders in spring 2000.

Lonestar’s Amazed was a chart run to behold - country songs often had some of the strangest and most protracted chart runs, and still do today I suppose.

Deeper Shade of Blue is a fab Steps song - a much more mature sound

Flowers is a garage classic - a shame Craig David beat them to number 1 but there never was going to be another result that week.

The Bad Touch remains hilarious, the BBC censoring nuts is 🤣

Black Box Recorder’s The Facts of Life unlocked a great forgotten song - I’ll add that to my Spotify playlist now!

Of course the main highlight is Tocas Miracle which is rightly a dance classic

Airwave is also fab. Two great episodes showing the variety of the charts back then.

Good set of episodes again this week, glad to see these ones didn't get skipped after all 👍🏻

"Deeper Shade of Blue" is top tier Steps for me, it felt like they matured and went up a level on that single.

Sweet Female Attitude "Flowers", absolute classic of UK garage. Crazy that that charted the same week as "Fill Me In".

Speaking of which, superb solo number one debut for Craig David. Still a classic to this day.

Forgot about Hanson's comeback this year, quite in common with other pop acts of 97 / 98 returning this year, the truth was the gap was so large between when they released their last single from Middle of Nowhere (June 98) and this first single back that whatever momentum they had was lost. Still a good song though, I remember seeing them when they supported Busted a few years back and I found myself singing along to the chorus even though I hadn't heard it since it was released.

Lonestar "Amazed"... I won't say too much about that in terms of chart performance just yet as don't want to spoiler too much but that song was everywhere on Radio 2 and Magic that year. Felt bigger than it actually was.

Sisqo "Thong Song" though 🤣 I'd forgotten just how extra that performance was. I saw a video on social media recently of Cynthia Erivo choosing it as a standout vocal performance and she called it there and then. He took it to church on a song about thongs 🤣

Did find it hilarious that several of the audience behind Jessica Simpson couldn't hide how bored they were 🤣

Well spotted re: the Let Loose drummer on Point Break's performance, I thought that was him! Also shoutout to their commitment to a full on dance routine for a string laden midtempo 🤣👏🏻

Didn't remember it first time round but I loved that song from Black Box Recorder that was on this week. Will likewise be adding that to my playlists, very Zero 7 / Morcheeba-esque.

Fragma - "Toca's Miracle". I mean. Inspired and absolute classic dance anthem. Glad we do have the 'original' (and I do use that term loosely) back on streaming in some form or another.

So many highlights for me these past two weeks, wow!

15th April 2000

Just banger after banger in this Top 10. Flowers is a legendary Garage track and still holds up today. My friends always found the Bloodhound Gang hilarious back when we were kids, so seeing them here performing on TOTP with questionable censors (dog barking, lmao) was brilliant. Steps with a song that's quite solemn compared to their usual bubbly pop affair, but it's still a great Steps number. Then you have the clubs popping off with Lock N Load and Rank 1, absolute bangers!

Crazy to see both Bloodhound Gang and Lock N Load hanging on the same spot for two consecutive weeks, considering how rapid the charts were around this time. Didn't expect that at all! Also, Toca's Miracle is another HUGE dance classic, and I remember it on the radio when I was a kid, and rediscovered it when I bought 'The Best Club Anthems Classics' in 2005. The song still holds up to this day, and has so much energy I love it. Then you have a quieter affair with Sash! which is a beautiful number. I just love how he was hanging out on the left with his keytar, giving the camera the cheesy smile whenever it zoomed up to him.

One other thing I forgot to mention... and I guess we'll get our answer in a matter of days. I wonder if they’re going to show the special BBC Music Live episode of TOTP from Sheffield Arena from the May Bank Holiday that year that's been trailed in the last couple of episodes? I remember watching that (as well as the special edition of Live & Kicking that was on that day) and it'd be good to see that again.

The revolving door at the top of the charts stops for only the third time this year as Fragma (no credit for Coco) hold at the top and indeed the entire the top 3 are static for the first time since October 1999 but naturally all are down in sales terms. “Toca’s Miracle” fended all opposition away however selling 116,000 copies in the process, Craig David remains the nearest challenger on 69,000 and Sisqo retains bronze on 61,000, both Fragma and David are over the 300,000 mark and shaping up to be some of the biggest hits of 2000 currently at No 6 and 5 for the YTD respectively.

Biggest new entry of the week comes predictably enough from Oasis’s new single “Who Feels Love”, it couldn’t maintain its early midweek position of No 2 fading as the days passed and ends up entering at No 4 (57,500) making it (unless it climbs to a new peak and no Oasis single ever has) the group’s smallest hit since “Cigarettes & Alcohol” made No 7 back in 1994. It is however their 12th straight top 10 single regardless and comes with a live version of the Beatles “Helter Skelter” on the CD if that tempts you, it isn’t tempting people to buy the album “Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants”, it dips 23-26 having sold just 430,000 in its first 8 weeks.

Toni Braxton is back with a third album “The Heat” and lead single “He Wasn’t Man Enough”, Braxton has of course been in the wars since we last saw her in 1997 filing for bankruptcy and involved in litigation over royalties. Now all settled and with a new contract she scores her 5th top 10 single after moving 55,000 of her current hit which is produced by Darkchild and features Braxton’s real life boyfriend as the cheating man in the promo.

The newest names on the UK Garage scene are duo Jonny Lisners and Andy Lysandrou otherwise known as The Truesteppers. Their debut single “Buggin” features the guest vocals of former Another Level lead singer Dane Bowers and his real life girlfriend glamour model Jordan to add some chart clout, it doesn’t give them a chart topper but a No 6 start with 51,000 buyers isn’t bad.

Thanks to the power of referencing, Ricky Martin features on the current No 3 hit by Sisqo and the man himself is back at No 9 (35,000) in duet with Swedish singer Meja who’s previous best was No 12 back on 1998’s “All About The Money”. For Martin it rectifies the clear misfire that was last November’s “Shake Your Bon-Bon” which limped up to No 12, “Private Emotion” is actually a cover of a 1993 track by The Hooters.

Bloodhound gang prove consistent only drifting 5-7 (50,000) above Sweet Female Attitude who fall 4-8 (39,000) and Lock N Load round off 6-10 (32,000).

UK Garage continues to produce the hits as new comers Oxide & Neutrino score a surprise chart topper this week. Alex Rivers and Mark Oseitutu are just 17 and 18 and first produced the single “Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)” last year on white label selling 20,000 copies starting a bidding war which resulted in East West picking them up, their debut single samples not only the theme from the BBC series “Casualty” but also some script from the film “Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels” which has meant that stations have not played the track due to swearing.

The single launched into a fragile lead and by the end of the week had sold 70,700 to hold off a strong challenge from the outgoing Fragma who sold 69,200, it becomes the first chart topper to feature a TV theme since The Teletubbies in 1997. “Toca’s Miracle” incidentally is now No 3 on the YTD behind Gabrielle and All Saints and overtakes “Fill Me In” which drops 2-3 (46,000).

Meanwhile the US teen sensations keep on coming, a fortnight ago we had Jessica Simpson and now there is Mandy Moore who at just 15 was touring the US supporting *NSync and Backstreet Boys. Now 16 Moore scores herself a No 6 (34,000) single with “Candy” which only reached No 41 in the US.

More Garage in the form of Matthew James Coleman who records as MJ Cole and who had, arguably, one of the first UK top 40 singles of the genre when his first release “Sincere” made No 38 back in 1998. Since then he’s been earning himself a name as a remixer on a good few hits through 1999 and returns as a star himself with “Crazy Love” which nips in at No 10 (26,000).

The Bloodhoung Gang suddenly 7-4 to reach a new peak having so far charted 5-5-7-4 but the rise is (saleswise) illusionary, they’ve lost sales every week on release posting just 40,000 last week. Sisqo heads south 3-5 (39,000), True Steppers drift 6-7 (32,000), Toni Braxton relents 5-8 (30,000) and Sweet Female Attitude move 8-9 (27,000).
