We will have none of that B*witched slander thank you very much, Geri on the other hand carry on

B*witched were awful, they didn't deserve a single number one, let alone 4 of them! Definitely the worst of the big girl bands of that era. At least Geri had some decent songs (if we forget the existence of 'Look At Me' lol)

I think the posts here and in the other thread are very revealing as to the demographic of the posters..including myself. I guess I am too old to understand that Avril was considered huge by a certain

Alicia Keys is another I thought of, not big enough for the top 3 artists in this poll, but she has peaked at every position from #2 to #9.

The one who surprises me here is Janet Jackson. I’ve never thought of her as being that big (in the UK). And unlike, say Tina Turner, I rarely hear Janet Jackson songs played these days, or referred

The pair of you can zip it, Geri is worth every #1 and Look at me not being one of them is a CRIME! I was simply highlighting that Tina is a more legendary act than either that is all. whip

A few others that have shifted plenty of units worldwide and maybe should have been considered -

Dire Straits - 150M+

Genesis - 150M +

Eagles - 200M+

Dolly Parton - 100M+

Shania Twain - 100M+

Johnny Cash - 90M+

Linkin Park - 100M+

Def Leppard - 100M+

Pearl Jam - 85-100M

Black Sabbath - 85M+

Aerosmith - 150M+

Neil Young - 135M+ (if you include his work with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY)

Garth Brooks - 200M+

And of course the daddy of them all -

Bing Crosby - Estimated as much as 1B+ (White Christmas alone has sold in excess of 50M)

Garth Brooks is probably the biggest artist that 99% of the British public have probably never heard of. He's like to us what Robbie Williams is to Americans.

He has his fans though... Garth Brooks is playing Hyde Park this summer, whereas Robbie Williams wouldn't even play arenas in the US.

It doesn't help that his music is only available to stream on Amazon Music though! It's killed any sort of relevance with younger country fans.

So after a week of voting it looks like we have a clear top 5:

  1. Tina Turner (45 votes)

  2. Janet Jackson (43 votes)

  3. Bruce Springsteen (39 votes)

  4. Bon Jovi (34 votes)

  5. Amy Winehouse (30 votes)

with no one else even scoring in the 20s!

That certainly feels like the right top 5 from the list, nice work Buzzjack and thank you to the 126 (!) people that voted smile

I'll be honest I don't get the Amy Winehouse one. She was never a singles artist anyway, she didn't have any massive hits just one huuuuuuge album - which then boosted the sales of her first album and her posthumous album - which was also boosted by her dying tbh. I'm more surprised that Shaina Twain doesn't have one over her as Man I feel like a woman and That don't impress me much are legit huge singles - I'd argue Still the one aswell.

I get confused with who is credited on what but another I thought of is Dido, who was absolutely huge for two album campaigns. Of course she was sampled on Stan which reached number one but I don’t think the UK Charts count that in her discography.

Her posthumous album was boosted by her dying? Are you sure about that? lol

Just had another thought: Stevie Nicks.

I don’t think she’s had a Number 1 either as a performer or as a writer. I imagine the closest she has come as a songwriter is Bootylicious reaching number 2.

She wrote and sang 6 of Fleetwood Mac’s most streamed tracks - including being sole songwriter and lead performer on 5 of them.

Her songs were never big hits - and as a lead vocalist, I think she still hasn’t had a top 10 song - previously only reaching the top 20 with ‘Rooms On Fire’ and a dance cover of ‘Dreams’ but has finally doubled that Number this year.

But she is clearly an icon.

Alright smart arse! 🖕😂

I wonder if anyone's ever done a list of acts who've never had a UK number one single or album. Hall & Oates should be in the running for that one....

Baffled by Janet doing well here. I am one if her biggest fans but her relevance declined a lot in the early 00s and never really recovered. Sure, she has her fans but could she fill a stadium in the UK? Never! Whereas other in that top 5 would do it with ease (if alive).

Amy Winehouse? I'm not so sure.

I hate to agree with @Spiceboy but hes right Amy Winehouse never came close on the singles (except her mark Robson feature) she was definitely more of an albums seller

That is surprising. I remembered Garth Brooks being heavily pushed onto UK audiences in the mid-90s but we were having none of it, there just wasn't the demand for country music. Also it's been said that a factor in Robbie Williams lack of success is the similarity in name between him and actor Robin Williams, with Garth Brooks in the UK it was the similarity with footballer/pundit Garth Crooks.

A decade later few people in the UK had heard of Tim McGraw until he collaborated with Nelly, but then when he released his own song about skydiving and rocky mountain climbing it flopped.
