I was still in my 20s when The Killers were in their prime so wasn't over the hill yet and I do remember a couple of other songs they did but certainly not all those listed and I haven't heard any except "Mr Brightside" in the last 20 years or so. They were popular no doubt, but they were just one of many indie bands of the time beginning with K. I know the singer is Brandon Flowers but that's pretty much all I know about them, couldn't name another member or tell you how many of them there were. I believe they had an album called "Hot Fuzz" but wouldn't recognise the cover. I can't ever recall seeing someone in a Killers t-shirt. The only thing that makes them stand out compared to other indie bands of the time is the longevity of "Mr Brightside".

The Killers opened the Champions League final just less than 2 weeks ago, playing several of their hits. One of the biggest events on the planet, watched by an estimated 400 million viewers worldwide. They are still hugely popular.

  • I think the posts here and in the other thread are very revealing as to the demographic of the posters..including myself. I guess I am too old to understand that Avril was considered huge by a certain

  • Most people my age could probably recite Somebody Told Me, Human and When You Were Young off by heart. All These Things That I've Done, Read My Mind and The Man are also really popular!

  • Yeah objectively I'd argue that most people could name Smells Like Teen Spirit as by FAR Nirvana's biggest song in the same way Mr Brightside is by far the biggest Killers song. And objectively The K

Sure there are different ways to measure how big an artist is and the best way is a matter or opinion but surely nobody could seriously say that Avril Lavigne is bigger than Led Zeppelin.

I'm pretty sure they can? That is exactly what I'm doing lol, but again emphasising it is subjective. To me and, I imagine, most people under 45 and people who like pop music, Avril is the bigger artist.

I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of those 400m viewers watched it for the football rather than to watch The Killers play. I remember Camila Cabello opening the Champions League final and she got booed and many commented how terrible she was so it's hardly a measure of how big someone is.

Again, trying to stay objective, Led Zeppelin are definitely huge… they sold hundreds of millions of albums in their era, a different league in sales compared to most in this list

No… but their sales totals and 8 number one albums show they are hugely popular

I’m good with you bigging up the likes of Nirvana and Led Zeppelin as acts you rate, just not sure why you’re belittling other acts who as a matter of fact have also been really successful

I don't think The Killers are bad and yes they have been successful but we're talking about the biggest bands ever and none of these arguments convince me they're one of them. By the same token I've never thought much of David Bowie but it's clear to me that he was one of the biggest artists of all time.

Ooh speaking of Champions League, have Linkin Park been mentioned yet?

Good shout, but it's maybe not out of the question they could still get one in the future. Emptiness Machine topped the charts in quite a few countries.

What about Tate McRae, AJ Tracey, Aitch and 50 Cent, to name a few?

I voted Janet Jackson, Bon Jovi and Avril Lavigne, though.

Led Zeppelin greatest rock band ever, did not generally release singles

Bob Dylan, iconic

Bruce Springsteen Tune after tune after tune

Out of those I would only say 50 Cent would be worthy, AJ and Aitch have no impact outside the UK and they were only really big for about 5 years. It's still too early to tell how big Tate is when she's only just reached her peak stardom.

Alicia Keys is another I thought of, not big enough for the top 3 artists in this poll, but she has peaked at every position from #2 to #9.

Agreed, another strong shout. Most people would probably have expected either Fallin' or No One to have been #1s. Actually Empire State Of Mind tops them both in terms of sustained relevance I'd say.

AJ Tracey might be the most out there shout yet, dude's career lasted all of 2 and half years.

You can't be serious with those? They're certainly not in the same league as most of the others on this list!

i mean i kinda get 50 cent but he would have 0 votes so whats the point, Tate is only getting bigger and if she can keep up the hit formula a no.1 will be hers in no time

I remember seeing a statistic once that she’s only the artist with at least five US number ones not to have single UK number one. I actually think that might be just her and Morgan Wallen now.

If you ask the GBP, I imagine they would say Together Again is her number one.

Paula Abdul says remember me 😀

I went for Amy Winehouse, Bruce Springsteen and The Killers but was hard to narrow it down to just 3!

Amy’s career was so short but she really does feel up there with people who’ve had decades long careers when topics like this come about.
