19 Lindsay Lohan - Over

avg: 5.26

👑 Pop Royalty8 (...ready for it, gooddelta, AllStarBySmashMouth, Tafty, JosephStyles), 7 (Doug, Josh!, DaTilt, Lee_J11, Viper*, troublepink, pavi)

 Pop Flop-1 (Dobbo), 0 (lewistgreen)

It's swiftly over for Lindsay Lohan as she departs the rate in last place, with a 5.26 average. This is higher than Verbalicious' rock bottom 4.92 average last time but Atomic Kitten's 'Ladies Night' can boast the strongest last place average in this series, as theirs was 5.34 in the inaugural Pop Princesses rate.

2004 was a highly memorable period in LiLo's career as she not only starred as Cady Heron in Mean Girls, but also launched a singing career. Then 18-year-old Lohan experimented with pop-rock sounds, typical for teen idols at the time, in addition to more of a dance-pop direction. Her song 'Rumors' fell in the latter camp and was chosen as the first single from debut album Speak. This feisty lead addressed her relationship with the paparazzi and was written with a team including Taryll and T. J. Jackson from the group 3T, two of Michael Jackson's nephews - so came from a family with their own well documented history with the media. This song impacted some charts around the world but missed both the Billboard Hot 100 and U.K. Singles chart. Follow-up 'Over' still couldn't quite crack the U.S. but did give Lindsay a moment in the sun here in the United Kingdom.

This sophomore single was written by Lohan, Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks, plus produced by the latter two. The DioGuardi/Shanks writing team previously appeared in the Pop Princesses series as they were behind 'Pieces of Me' by Ashlee Simpson too. So they were slowly establishing a pop-rock pedigree that would also include hit-making for the likes of Hilary Duff and Kelly Clarkson. Lohan had a bit of experience with rockier sounds, as she was part of fictional group Pink Slip in the film Freaky Friday, so this sonic shift from the dance-pop lead wasn't too unexpected. 'Over' is written about an on/off relationship with a partner. Lohan stated that the track was about her real life break-up with fellow actor Wilmer Valderrama in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres.

Kara DioGuardi also provided backing vocals for 'Over' while John Shanks plays the bass, guitar and keyboards on it. DJ and producing legend Dave Audé was involved with the engineering.

The music video is inspired by American Beauty and was directed by Jake Nava, who also directed the videos for Mis-teeq's 'Scandalous' and Beyoncé's 'Crazy In Love' from previous rates.

'Over' is Lindsay Lohan's sole entry in the U.K. top 40 as it entered and peaked at #27. This chart week in 2005 was Tony Christie and Peter Kay's final week at #1 with '(Is This The Way to) Amarillo'. Lohan can boast a higher charting 'Over' than Drake's in the U.K., as his stalled at #50 here, but Portishead's song of the same name has the best peak of them all - pipping her at #25.

Lindsay may be the first to go but some posters did appreciate this song, particularly: ...ready for it, gooddelta, AllStarBySmashMouth, Tafty and JosephStyles, who gave it an 8. Meanwhile, I'm sure Dobbo will be pleased that it's over for this song already, as he gave Lohan his lowest possible mark of -1.

Poor Lindsay cheeseblock

Whilst it’s nothing groundbreaking, it’s perfectly fine and doesn’t really deserve its last place!

When it came to last place, Lindsay Lohan had it locked up, like... herself (more Mr Worldwide relevance after the 'On The Floor' resurgence).

I didn't remember 'Over' from when it came out - it's OK but nothing special.

It's not too bad but I'm not exactly gonna complain about it coming last. I felt like this would be a lot bigger at the time and its #27 shocked me, should've just given 'Rumours' a full proper release instead.
