They can say FenderDean have broken Bryan Adams' record all they like, I'll never recognise it even if I am desperately trying to cling on to my childhood memories.

It's been there by default most weeks when there's been no big new release (although I admit lots of big comebacks have fallen flatter than expected), it's been passively listened to massively because of 'hits' playlists and people actually went out to buy Everything I Do (I Do It For You), including me on cassette single when I was 8.

And consecutive weeks matter, otherwise EID (IDIFY) wouldn't have been such a big story in the first place considering Frankie Laine had 18 non-consecutive ones back in the Stone Age!

So no, this overplayed beigefest and souped-up arse-end-of-album track (and Sam Fender has more #1s than anyone on my personal chart so I am actually a big fan) has NOT broken Bryan's iconic 1991 record.

Anyway, either change the charts or scrap them, they're as boring as hell to follow now!

It's got to the point where if a big radio song I like with tonnes of airplay that feels really huge even touches the Top 40 or even 100 it's a bonus rather than a given.

And that happens a lot.

It spent another 20 weeks top 75 though 🤭

They never deleted it as far as I understand, they just wanted to get people who didn't already own it rushing to the shops thinking they'd run out.

It was cynical marketing b0lloX!

I keep seeing the ‘people actually went out and bought it’ piece come up again and again - in that instance then nothing is a hit or worthy or charting now then? It’s different times and they are competing with the favored consumption available to them.

RMI has sold out of every physical they’ve produced (12k) and paid downloads are 25k.

And playlists haven’t been overly kind to them - it took months and months to get Spotify on board.

At the moment it’s #5 on HHUK - if people aimlessly listen to playlists then the 4 songs above it would be charting higher, people are actively listening to it (of course it’s still benefitting from playlist streams as are any songs placed on a playlist) but there seems to be a notion it’s charting because of playlists only.

Radio are not hammering it either - it’s #27 in the YTD chart and not in the current weekly Top 40 chart.

Yes I really wish people would get over the 'people went out and bought it' thing. If streaming existed back then they wouldn't have done so then either. It simply has not been relevant for a good 10 years now and never will be again barring some kind of post-apocalyptic society reset (although maybe that's more likely at this point than 'Mr. Brightside' ever going back to SCR etc.) If you're going to constantly complain about streaming-era songs breaking those records then you really ought to just stop following the charts entirely! (But anyway, obviously Sam Fender hasn't broken Bryan Adams' record regardless because that record was always explicitly for consecutive weeks so it has never been a relevant comparison to 'Rein Me In').

Anyway... excellent to see ANOTR finally going top 10 and top 5 at that, interesting to see how it holds up next week given the boost in the last couple of weeks does seem to have been at least tangentially tied to the football but it is still holding up very well on both Spotify and Apple so hoping it can stay top 5 if not climb even further. Also pleased that Bonnie Tyler did make the top 40 after all, I've never held the song in quite as high regard as most people do on here but it's still obviously an undeniable classic and a well earned tribute.

Was listening to the chart show up to #16, fuming at 'Hey Jude' being skipped just to play 'Ordinary' (I'm not surprised they skipped it - much like they skipped every Halloween song that charted last year except for 'Thriller' because it was top 10 - but that was just straight trolling). Was finally my first time hearing the Alyssa Grace song (I still need to get caught up with the top 100 polls ph34r), I did actually quite like her other low top 100 hit despite the vocals but they are definitely a bit much on this one oops! Also first time hearing 'Great Expectation' and it's another pretty good song from SIENNA.
