Btw the one that was vetoed was ‘As I Lay Me Down’ which was almost the opposite to the Gabrielle situation as it had a lot more streams than I’d have expected for it

  • I can host a synctube listenthrough on Monday 24th August if that's alright with everyone. The BJSC will have finished by that time.

  • OMG BJ - What a competition , i have never enjoyed a set of songs more in any comp 👏!!

  • I did think Joni Mitchell was a glaring omission from the entry list. I was tempted myself but couldn't decide on what I would send from her, I think a lot of her songs are brilliant but they're often

I really like 'Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover' from Sophie (which wouldn't have been allowed here), I was gonna say I should probably check out her albums but looking at my last.fm I listened to all her albums back in 2022! (except the one that came out in 2023 ofc) I have no recollection of this haha.

Give Whaler another listen, that's an excellent album!

I thought about Sophie’s ‘Right Beside You’ as well, but after extensive back and forth PM’s with Dandy lol I didn’t think it was going to be allowed. My first two options were not accepted because one was sent to BJSC Spin Off and the second one had a peak of #13, which it is almost the same as Sophie’s!!!

Yeah, 'Right Beside You' was a moderately sized hit at the time and definitely one of her best known songs.

'As I Lay Me Down' is one of the most stunning and flawless songs ever written, one of my all time faves heart

This list is fabulous. Some of my favourite songs of all time are represented. And Bror/Carel almost submitting a long I love?? I am amazed!!

My back-up was a different song by an artist on the list!

I have to get used to this being an anonymous contest as opposed to BJSC - I almost talked about my entry hehehe

Curious to know who the other person who originally confirmed her was (which I guess we may never know now unless they reveal themselves). Tut tut at them actually trying one of her two much more streamed songs though. x

Coyly raises hand 😅

So in my defence, I use Apple Music so I wasn’t immediately aware of her streaming numbers. But I kinda picked Suzanne as an option and checked out a handful of her songs. Luka immediately stood out to me, with Marlene On The Wall my second favourite.

I did then see her streaming numbers and whilst I submitted Luka initially, I was fully expecting a reply to say it was vetoed (which it was!). I then chanced my arm with Marlene as its streams were much lower, but alas it wasnt meant to be 😂

We should just do a Tori Amos edition somewhere. Everyone sends a Tori Amos song.

I can host if no one else wants to xo

But whilst we’re on the subject, I was also expecting to see some of these potentially crop up:

David Bowie

Joni Mitchell

Sheryl Crow

Bob Dylan

Neil Young

David Gray

Carly Simon

Nick Cave

Tracey Chapman

Van Morrison

Paul Simon

Sting

Shawn Colvin

Stevie Wonder

Elton John

Patti Smith

Cat Stevens

Emmylou Harris

George Michael

Annie Lennox

Nick Drake

Phil Collins (shudder)

Paul Weller

Bruce Springsteen

Joan Armatrading

Sinead O’Connor

Prince

Billy Joel

Carole King

I mean there were soooo many possibilities but most of the biggest names weren’t even mentioned

Bob Dylan was my second choice with Desolation Row from Highway 61 Revisited (all 12 minutes of it x), but I figured we'd just had another cut from him last contest, surprised no one else went for him though!

A lot of those names just didn't occur to me! I guess people usually try and avoid big artists for these types of contest?

Yeah I think a fair chunk of that list are artists that we would all be familiar with to some degree and from my point of view I like to pick things that would be new to people, even if they might now the name. Which is ironic for me to say as I actually felt I went way too obvious this time.

If Lene Marlin was vetoed, why would I think that Annie Lennox and George Michael was going to be ok? lol

Joke aside, I might have considered a lot of artists from that list, but prevented myself from sending them because I thought they were way too known (even though any album track would have been ok I suppose., just like Alanis, Gabrielle and Kate Bush)

“Unforgivable Sinner” was a fairly big hit though and it was inescapable on Radio 1 at the time. A non hit by her would have been fine.

Surely given how (understandably) strict the vetoing process was this time, none of those acts would have been allowed unless it was their very deepest of deep cuts?

Not with singles, no… although I was more just making a list of people that I was expecting may get submitted, rather than inferring that people should have tried them
