Oh blast, I misread the wiki column for the US hits for The Cranberries as the UK one and assumed Linger peaked at 8 (I knew Zombie missed the top 10 but wasn't sure Linger did), I actually had that one damn x

Billy Preston I must've misread somewhere but at least I wasn't the only one! I'd have never have actually got that answer as I didn't know the album chart was included too.

At least I got Duncan Laurence (and got my spelling right jeez!)

  • It's ludicrous in retrospect that none of Linger, Zombie or Dreams made the top 10. I'm not sure I can think of a stronger set of 3 singles for an act who only ever achieved top 20.

  • That was one of the last ones I gave an answer for... and the one that @awardinary made me think of after his BJSC post about a shanty!

  • A huge thank you to everyone who took part! ❤️ If I manage to get everything entered and double-checked tonight, I'm hoping to start revealing the results sometime tomorrow.

I mean, it seems harsh to me but it's your quiz so it's your call D and I feel like I've already been riding my luck on the Bryan Adams question lol

Yeah exactly so stop whining you rotten fruit! 🤭

Not surprised I got Billy Preston and Cream wrong - wasn't sure at all for B so I guessed Billy because I vaguely recalled some issues not crediting him on Get Back while Cream was a total guess because I wanted to put something down rather than leaving it blank.

Also seconding what others have said about the presentation images/collages for the answers - they look great and I can tell a lot of effort went into them! ❤️

Don't you have a rubbish Cher song to go and find for the next forum song contest?

Didn't you give it 7 points!?!? 🤨

An artist who never appeared on the UK charts during their lifetime, but went on to achieve a UK No. 1 after their death.

my intended answer

eva cassidy.png

Eva Cassidy never appeared on the UK charts during her lifetime. She died in 1996, largely unknown to the British public, but her music became hugely successful in the UK posthumously. Her album Songbird eventually reached No. 1, and in 2007, eleven years after her death, she achieved her first and only UK No. 1 single with What a Wonderful World, a posthumous duet with Katie Melua that combined Melua’s vocals with Cassidy’s original recording.

Now we're getting to the cases where someone gave the correct answer to a clue but matched it to the wrong letter.

ELTON JOHN

This one has made me realise that my wording was slightly ambiguous. Elton John has had UK No. 1 duets with female artists, including Don't Go Breaking My Heart with Kiki Dee and Cold Heart with Dua Lipa, so technically two of his highest-charting singles do satisfy the condition. He also had several other UK No. 1s, whereas I intended the clue to refer to an artist whose two highest-charting singles could specifically be identified as those two female duets. Since I didn't explicitly rule out other singles reaching the same peak, I'll accept Elton John as a valid interpretation. 2/4 for the right answer, but -2 for the wrong letter

Ebeneezer Goode

Ebeneezer Goode was given for the clue 'A song that reportedly got a record executive excommunicated by the Vatican', which was matched to the wrong letter here. I still checked the song to see whether it could work as an alternative answer to the clue itself. It certainly caused considerable controversy at the time, but that controversy was unrelated to the Vatican.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Enola Gay

Being anti-war isn't necessarily the same as being pacifist. An anti-war song can criticise a particular conflict, the military or militarism without advocating a broader rejection of war or violence. Since the clue specifically says the song was considered inappropriate because of its pacifist message, I was looking for evidence of that more specific connection, rather than simply an anti-war interpretation.

Enola Gay is an anti-war song, so it does fit the general theme of the clue. However, the reason it was considered unsuitable for BBC children’s programming had nothing to do with its anti-war or pacifist message. The issue was reportedly a misunderstanding of the word gay in the title, which was interpreted as a sexual reference. So while the song’s message is relevant, the specific reason for the BBC restriction doesn’t match the clue.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World was considered inappropriate for BBC airplay during the Gulf War. However, this was due to its political themes rather than a specifically pacifist message, which is the key part of the clue.

BUT....

Still, given their close connection to the idea behind the clue, and applying the same flexibility I've used with other anti-war answers, I'm giving each 1 out of 2 points for the clue itself. There are no additional points for the letter match, since both were matched to the wrong letters.

Yay, Eva Cassidy was one of the more straightforward ones!

I agree, this one came to me straight away!

I'm glad I didn't enter this or nine would be calling me out for every incorrect answer and I'd be left embarrassed! I applaud the smart people here though.

Honestly, over the last few days, every time I saw a correct answer, it felt like the sun had come out

Does that mean there is more incorrect than correct ones?! 😂

There are more mistakes in the first half, but there are still a few in the second half as well.

kind of regretting putting guesses on any questions that I didn't know now - sorry to have made more work for you!

Yeah you've undertaken a huge amount of work @nine¾ for doing writeups for every incorrect answer from every person! Not sure I'd have made the effort to do that!

No, not at all! You'll just have to wait a little longer for everything now. I'm really glad I did this though, especially since I'd never really followed the UK charts before, and now I've actually become interested in them.

I'm glad too, it was genuinely one of the most interesting and challenging quizzes I've done on here!

I got really confused for a moment there, it didn’t dawn on me that the answer may not be for the question so I was trying to figure out who it was that seemingly thought Elton John actually was Princess Diana
