Miguel’s sound evolves every time he encounters a new way to express love—and as one of pop’s friskiest experimentalists, that means his career is a study in subverting the very notion of a conventional R&B star. The singer-songwriter born Miguel Jontel Pimentel (Los Angeles, 1985) was drawn to music’s insider/outsiders from the beginning, mimicking the moves of Michael Jackson at family gatherings at age three, and later drawing both artistic and sartorial inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, Prince and Jimi Hendrix. So when it came time for his 2010 debut, All I Want Is You, Miguel flouted tradition by moving elegantly, sexily, both within and beyond his assigned genre. In back-to-back tracks, he slid from boom-bap soul to vulnerable a cappella to uptempo electro-funk. His confidence found composure on 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, which sounds as Technicolour and wondrous as the title suggests. On 2015’s Wildheart, he dove deeper into psych rock, incorporating his own guitar and a Lenny Kravitz cameo into raw, grinding cuts that also supported Kurupt rapping and Miguel singing in Spanish. By 2017’s War & Leisure, he seemed to be flitting across genres just to prove he could. After returning to his Art Dealer Chic EP series following almost a decade-long gap in 2021, Miguel explored the dark, difficult aspects of his divorce on 2025’s CAOS. During an Apple Music radio takeover ahead of the album, he cited the influence of synth- and sample-wielding outliers like Nine Inch Nails and Flying Lotus alongside the brooding alt-rock of Nirvana and Radiohead. First time listen to the chart in a while and I don't remember it being this dead and full of old rubbish last time. They need to bring in recurrent rules - i.e no songs over 3 years old or something.

Biography

A powerful singer-songwriter and electric performer, Dolly Parton was one of country music’s most beloved figures. Born to an impoverished family in Tennessee in 1946 (in humble upbringings that would inspire such songs as “Coat of Many Colors”), she started singing in church, received a guitar at age eight and performed on regional radio programmes as a kid. She moved to Nashville the day after her high school graduation in 1964 and quickly signed with Monument Records. Her first charting single, 1966’s “Dumb Blonde”, introduced her as a fun-loving but independent woman confident enough to flout stereotypes and command her own destiny. In the late ’60s, Parton enjoyed huge success as a regular on Porter Wagoner’s weekly TV show and through a long string of collaborative hits. But she became even more popular as a solo artist, particularly with a pair of 1974 hits: the aching “I Will Always Love You”—which Parton wrote about needing to strike out on her own without Wagoner—and the timeless “Jolene”, with its poignant minor-key mode and emotional intensity. In 1981, Parton landed her first pop No. 1 hit, the blue-collar anthem “9 to 5”, and co-starred in the comedy film of the same name. She then had the biggest smash of her career in 1983 with “Islands In the Stream”, an easygoing romantic duet with Kenny Rogers. Further collaborations—like her albums with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, plus cameos on songs by Kesha and Miley Cyrus (her goddaughter)—expanded Parton’s legacy through the end of the 20th century and well into the 21st. Over time, she became involved in endeavours like her namesake Dollywood theme park, a 9 to 5 Broadway musical and the literacy-focused Imagination Library. But Parton’s latter-day work—including a series of stripped-down bluegrass albums and 2023’s Rockstar, a rock ’n’ roll album released upon her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction—showed that her musical gifts contained multitudes.
