Biography

Olivia Rodrigo recognises that the yearning, melancholy aspect of her love songs is key to their intense emotional appeal—beginning with 2021’s weepy smash, “drivers license”. “I think that grounds it in something real,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in 2026, “and that’s why we resonate with those types of songs so much.” Born in 2003 in Murrieta, California, Rodrigo juggled childhood lessons in piano, voice and acting before starring in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and eventually turning to pop music with an abashed passion for seething ’90s alt-rock. Rodrigo was only 18 when she released her debut album, SOUR, a breakup record with a meticulous rage: “Where’s my f***ing teenage dream?” she wondered on “brutal”, the album’s Elastica-recalling opener. GUTS followed in 2023, with Rodrigo and repeat producer/collaborator Dan Nigro placing her pointillistic lyrics in an expanded sonic palette that incorporated influences from off-kilter ’90s acts like The Breeders and B******e Surfers. In the same 2026 interview, she described each of her albums as a journey of self-discovery—including that year’s you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Observing that it’s the first album she’d made as a woman in her twenties, Rodrigo hinted at how she traded angst for joy on several tracks. But even then, there should still be enough visceral realism to keep fans poring over every lyrical detail. - Apple Music

Biography

After winning Album of the Year at the Grammys for 2022’s Harry’s House and securing the year’s best-selling single in “As It Was”, Harry Styles could do just about whatever he liked. He chose to take up long-distance running in Italy and hit the clubs in Berlin, where he discovered a font of liberation that would power his 2026 follow-up, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.. “I remember going out for the first time in Berlin and standing in the middle of the dance floor,” Styles told Apple Music, “and feeling so unbelievably free and safe that I just had my hands in the air and my eyes closed, and I just felt these tears streaming down my face. And it was this moment of, like, ‘I feel so alive right now.’” His post-One Direction career has been defined by just such spontaneity, making him one of the more interesting and adventurous pop stars of his era. Born in Redditch, Worcestershire, England in 1994, Styles made his solo debut with 2017’s “Sign of the Times”—a deeply felt piano ballad that slowly but surely took flight—and a sturdy self-titled first album. Then he handily reinvented himself on 2019’s Fine Line, a more daring pop statement that could comfortably accommodate the breezy radio catnip of “Watermelon Sugar” alongside quirkier forays into era-hopping funk and soul. Harry’s House felt even more personal and idiosyncratic again, often playing like his own private dance party. Which brings us back to his Berlin sojourn and Kiss All the Time..., an album offsetting its more upbeat percolations with equally rhythmic yet fairly subtle turns. It leans into creative catharsis rather than commercial calculation, which makes sense given the international reset and early-thirties career re-evaluation that preceded it. “The key thing was, while I was away from it all, I missed it,” he told Apple Music. “I missed it because I love it, and I still love it.” - Apple Music

Biography

Alex Warren stepped out from behind the phone and into the recording studio to introduce his passionate, ultimately chart-topping singer-songwriter pop. After founding the TikTok collective Hype House, Warren turned from his patented prank videos to music. By 2021, he was crafting quivering, sensitive, confessional pop tunes that slather his open-hearted melodies with layers of gossamer electronics, providing Warren with an avenue to process the trauma of losing both of his parents at an early age. The California native charted abroad in early 2024 before making his Billboard Hot 100 debut with "Burning Down" from his debut EP, You’ll Be Alright, Kid (Chapter 1). In 2025, Warren landed a global smash hit with "Ordinary", included on his full-length debut You'll Be Alright, Kid, which added 11 songs to the initial EP and features collabs with ROSÉ and Jelly Roll. - Apple Music

Biography

Back in the early ‘90s, TLC were at the forefront of a revolution, carving out a previously undefined space that landed somewhere between rap and neo-R&B. Before they paved a lane for a new generation of stars that included Destiny's Child and Ashanti, the Atlanta-bred trio of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas nabbed a spot on L.A. Reid’s LaFace Records. Their sound on early hits like “What About Your Friends” updated new jack swing for the ‘90s rap generation, and their choreographed dance moves were bested only by their colourful matching outfits. TLC’s colossally replayable hits, like “Creep”, “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs,” continue to crop up in movies and on the radio, while their second LP, CrazySexyCool, has been certified 12-times platinum. That album featured production from Sean “Puffy” Combs and Jermaine Dupri, giving the group head-nodding beats over which they could move from rapping to singing with ease. Although the band’s last release as a trio came in 2002, the year Lopes was tragically killed in a car crash, TLC remained one of the best-selling female-led groups through the 2010s. Ultimately, it would be another 15 years before T-Boz and Chilli released new music, with 2017's self-titled return, a nostalgic, rose-tinted audit of the styles that made them so successful the first time around. Live performances found the duo performing their parts accompanied by a recording of Left Eye’s voice, a way to give their fans just a little more TLC. - Apple Music

Biography

Malcolm Todd's warm songs combine a fluid alternative R&B sound with the emotional outlook of an indie singer/songwriter. Todd began making music at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and released his first EP, Demos Before Prom, in 2022. A second EP, Shower Shoes, followed in 2023, and singles such as "Art House" and especially the viral break-up song "Roommates," garnered attention online. In 2024, he released two more EPs, which were then combined and expanded into the mixtape Sweet Boy. Showcasing his playful and yearning experimental R&B-pop, his official debut album, simply titled Malcolm Todd, landed near the midpoint of the Billboard 200 upon its release in 2025. Early in 2026, "Earrings" from the nearly two-year-old Sweet Boy enjoyed a surge in popularity and took the mixtape onto the Billboard 200. Todd's sophomore album, Do That Again, followed in mid-2026. - Apple Music

As we build up to finding out this week's number one it seems to me the right place and time to remember someone whose name may not be familar to a lot of you, but who appeared on more UK #1's than any other performer in history, namely legendary and profilific drummer Clem Cattini, who died this week at the age of 89 following a fall at home.

He appeared on 42 UK #1's (though some sources state 43 or even 45). Here's a list of 42 that I found online (and yes some are quite cheesy, and I know one in particular involves a very much cancelled vocalist):
