Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol is #58 this week! :cheer:

It has now equalled the chart weeks for Amazing Grace by Judy Collins from 1970:

49-42-34-34-30-21-19-8-8-6-{5}-5-6-7-9-13-6-19-18-23-24-23-29-37-30-42-38-46-38-47-49-45-48R(2)-47R(6)-47-41-41-47-40-

This makes Chasing Cars the second equal longest running chart song - only My Way by Frank Sinatra at 122 weeks beats both :o Ta to polyhex for the chart runs :P

but it's weird that both songs only got to number 5 and 6

but 67 weeks is long, really good!

I think Chasing Cars is a rubbish, bland song! Seems some people must like it though.....

My Way only got to #5 too. :o

Weird that the three longest runners in chart history weren't the biggest sellers at the time.

Maybe they last so long on the chart because they're 'growers'? Having said that none of the above ever grew on me!! But you know what I mean.

Top 50-wise, Chasing Cars would be 28 weeks behind Amazing Grace :P

If they were no.1 i think they would drop faster. If Chasing Cars got to no.1 i think its chart run will be like this (ignoring that rule):

1-1-1-1-2-3-5-6-8-10-13-14-13-16-19-23-26-29-30-36-35-42-43-49-52-55-61-68-73-x

All those promotions and tv shows it was featured in wouldn't do much but it would still rise a lot still at christmas

it still gets loads of plays on radio and the hits, and people watch and listen and download it - hasnt every1 got the album by now???

boring stadium fodder

Just because they spent the same weeks in the charts you can't really compare the chart performance like for like though.

Bare in mind that most of the weeks chasing cars has been in the charts is due to download sales which did not exist back in 1970/71.Still a great chart run though.

but back in the 70's it was a different era music is available differently now, back in the 70;s you cudnt download music for free either as u can today
surely there has to be a limit put on how long a song can spend on the charts, as with downloads it could just be in the charts for the next 10 years and spent 1000 weeks on the chart or somethin ridiculous like that...

In the early 1970s record shops stocked a much wider range of singles. Now most shops only sell a couple dozen titles at most. So a single is going to be dropped after only a few weeks. Now that it's still possible to download the song, that doesn't prevent it staying in the charts.

I don't agree. The chart should reflect what people are buying. If that means some songs stay in the chart for a very long time, so be it. This week's chart contains a lot of songs from the early part of last year, presumably largely due to people getting an MP3 player for Christmas and downloading songs they didn't buy at the time. Before downloads, people wouldn't have been able to buy those songs. Now they can and the chart should reflect that even if it does mean the charts around Christmas / New Year are a little odd.

I think the digital era is the start of something new for singles anyway.

They have gotten poorer and poorer reaching an all time low in 2004 but since downloads they have continued to rise and get stronger. Alright the chances of getting a million seller seem to be very slim these days but overall songs are selling much much more. Can you imagine 'About You Now' managing 300k+ 3/4 years back? and I'm pleased for 'Chasing Cars'! If that were out in 2004 it would have spent 15 weeks on the chart at a push.

In the end of chart run Judy was only 2 weeks at #49, not 3. In the 70's around New Year's Day for one week the chart had less positions (30) than normal (50).

Amazing Grace, Judy Collins - 66 wks - #5

1970-1972 | 49-42-34-34-30-21-19-8-8-6-5-5-6-7-9-13-6-19-18-23-24-23-29-37-30-42-38-46-38-47-49-45-x-48-x-x-x-x-x-47-47-41-41-47-40-49-x-x-x-x-50-x-x-x-48-48-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-31-46-24-23-20-21-21-22-26-32-29-31-31-38-40-37-42-37-42-x-46-50-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-49-49

Sinatra's chart run is incomplete.

My Way, Frank Sinatra - 124 wks - #5

1994 | 45-58

Songs with 60 weeks or more on the chart:

124 - #5 - My Way, Frank Sinatra (1969-1994)

67 - #6 - Chasing Cars, Snow Patrol (2006-2007)

66 - #5 - Amazing Grace, Judy Collins (1970-1972)

amy winehouse rehab could join that list as it keeps re entering the chart and its well over 40 weeks on the chart already
If we had the old chart rules Chasing Cars would have only made 17 weeks before becoming chart inelligable. Thank goodness for the new rules and bless all the Downloaders!

Is that really a problem? Its a sales chart that reflects on what people are buying, and if people are still buying a really old song so be it
