OK guys here's what I thought of the acts and the show in general last night. I'm almost afraid to post having read some borderline nasty comments about Andy Abraham's victory, but I at least hope you will hear me out and realise why I'm saying these things.

OK so firstly we had the "battle of the girl groups." I have to say beforehand I thought these were the two strongest songs, and despite all the support there has been for the Revelations I thought LoveShy's song would have fared better in Eurovision. However, I immediately changed my mind when I saw the performances. LoveShy's vocals were the worst of the night - and while I appreciate that alot of this was down to nerves, that simply won't do when it comes to Eurovision. The Revelations were hardly pitch perfect either, but my goodness they sold their song well. The performance was professional and top notch, loved the pyros (they weren't overdone), and the harmonies worked well.

I think the judges made the right choice, although I did think the basis John Barrowman chose was very misjudged (LoveShy's song is a pop song, not a Eurovision song apparently. Isn't that what got us into the mess last year? This was the first of many times he annoyed me).

As for Joseph and Maria, I thought these were among the weakest. I have to say Rob McVeigh surprised me and pulled a good performance out of the bag. His vocals were strong last night, but the song is bland and I don't think he suits it. His image is wrong as well. As for Simona, good move bringing the song down a couple of keys from the studio version. She seemed like she didn't really know what to do on stage. I didn't think either of them stood a realistic chance so I wasn't too bothered about who went through.

Again, Barrowman annoyed me by saying ballads have no place at Eurovision (maybe if he watched he would see that there has been a ballad in the top 3 for the last 4 years). I was a bit confused about Terry Wogan's role by this point as well. His position as chair of the jury was obviously designed to make him seem important, but in reality he had to do less than the other two! He never even had to give his opinion due to the other 2 judges agreeing every time. I did think the show was all about Terry, which was a bit egoistical, but he just about got away with it, as he was quite funny last night, and NOT the most annoying person on the show. Any guesses who my nomination for that would be?

At this point was the "other" catagory. I have been warming to Andy Abraham's song over the last week, and I have to say he gave a vocally sound performance. At this point I was still behind the Revelations, but I have to say I was impressed, especially after a couple of nothing special performances. His song has a good tune, and he sings it well. I've not been keen on Michelle Gayle's tune at all. I think it is tuneless drivel, but as I predicted, she sang it well and gave a very good and energetic performance. This is when I started to get worried, because I genuinely believe we would come last if Michelle were to be picked. John Barrowman's astounding bias surfaced again and I was close to throwing something at the TV.

When the final 2 announced, I was very disappointed that the Revelations weren't chosen, but I expected the public to be sold on Michelle's performance of what is really a nothing much song. Pleasantly surprised that Andy got to the final 2. At this point I was behind him, purely because I was SO INCREDIBLY AGAINST Michelle Gayle going to Eurovision. As enthusiastic and nice she seems to be, she would have been an embarrassment I think. We'll never know now of course, but I think it could have gone horribly wrong, as those songs that have been written "with Eurovision in mind", especially from the UK always seem to falter, the most recent example of course being Scooch.

So after more Wogan worshipping and a frankly bizarre performance from Katrina, it was results time. I was pleased to see references being made to the fact the UK made the wrong choice last year. I was fully resigned to the fact that Michelle Gayle was going to win at this point (especially when the cheers went up from the crowd at just the mention of her name!). I was very pleased at Andy Abraham winning.

Now I know alot of you are HORRIFIED at the thought of him representing us. But the way I see it is this. None of the 6 songs, realistically were anything special and would have troubled the scoreboard too much, and 2-3 of them would have done extremely badly. At least Andy Abraham has a nice catchy TUNE to his song (something Michelle Gayle had very little of), and gave the best vocal performance of the night. It is nothing amazingly outstanding, and I am not for a second suggesting that we will get a top ten placing, but I don't think we would have with any of the six. I'd say with the right draw, it is the kind of song that will pick up 4s and 5s from each country, as he give a confident vocal performance and does have a nice warm voice that I think certain people will really like.

I'd say we can expect a respectable mid-table position, which, considering four of our acts in the last 5 years have finished in the bottom 5, is very respectable indeed. I'll be more than willing to admit I was wrong in May, and I still think the Revelations could have done slightly better, but don't be too quick to dismiss Andy's chances. Watch this space.

Please let me know what you think of what I've said, but please no pointless bashing just for the sake of it.

Interesting read Peter. I still personally think Andy will only pick up about ten points, but it would be nice to be proved wrong. :lol: We didn't have a "Cyndi" this year at all, so I don't think it's such a travesty that he was chosen over the Revelations, so overall I'm not too annoyed he got chosen anymore, like I was last night! Barrowman needs a good kick up the arse. What a nausiating little man! :(

I agree. I don't think any of them were anything special. I don't know why but I just have a feeling (like I did before the final) that Andy has the potential to maybe pick up a steady flow of lower points, but who knows. At least it's quite unique in the Contest this year, and if we do come bottom 3, we'll lose with dignity.

I hope Barrowman isn't invited back.

Has anyone complained on Radio 2 message boards yet :unsure: I wonder if Terry Wogan reads them :lol:

I doubt they'll do anything after the Scooch fiasco last year...

And Peter, some interesting points ^_^ I disagree completely on Andy though - it is ridiculously dull, dad at disco faire, and we have learned NOTHING from Belgium last year by sending it I think :( I reckon that with the right performance Michelle could've certainly done very well for us, although that said I still hate John Barrowman's guts, the man knows NOTHING about Eurovision and quite frankly needs shooting for thinking he does after last year :manson:

We'll never lose with dignity as long as Terry Wogan persists with his 'political' myth :manson:

And Barrowman will continue to be invited back, seeing as A: he professes 'knowledge' and 'love' of Eurovision, and B: he's gay

Both of these = perfect man for Eurovision according to the BBC :manson: God I hate the Beeb! <_<

I actually thought Wogan was quite funny last night which makes a chance from the last few years. Maybe the BBC's pathetic attempt to take it more seriously this year will transfer to his commentary slightly? At least we know he has listened to a few of the songs!

But we've got 2 helpings of Paddy at least :D

I really think its getting wild anyhow as no one seems to like Andy & Michelle i'm might get slaughtered by you lot but i thought andy and michelle were the best out of the lot

My order of performances

6TH = awful = Rob MCVeigh

5th=Revelations

4th=Simona

3rd=Loveshy - i like the legs :wub: :lol:

2nd = Michelle gayle

1st = andy

I agree. They were the most polished. I hated Michelle's song, but she did do a good job selling it.

I'm actually very fond of "Even If", but not for Eurovision. We deemed Andy not good enough for the X Factor title, but we do think he's good enough to represent us to half the world - isn't that just typical of our attitude towards Eurovision? I don't think it'll do hideously badly, but it IS a forgettable song, against some of the other stuff that we're up against already for this year ... Estonia at least is worse than ours - but I'm not seeing awfully good things. If only Revelations had done a better vocal, the could have had it, and done pretty well I think.

And Barrowman has to go.

The only reason i can see for the UK picking hasbeens for the national final is looking at the chart history for Katrina and the waves, in 1997 it was nearly 11 years since they had last had a top 40 hit, so would pobably have been called a hasbeen in 1997. So maybe the bbc thing a hasbeen will do it for us again.......

Well Scooch wre hasbeens and we all know what happened there! and Javine was also a Hasbeen!

Arrrrgh I am so f***ing annoyed. This has pissed me off almost as much as Scoochgate last year. Once again, we get THREE credible songs and send a f***ing $h!te one.

Cyndi, Big Brovaz, Hawkins & Brown last year and now Simona, the Revelations and Michelle Gayle.

ARGH.

Sorry I cant stand that song! :( It was worse than Scooch! Maybe because i like a bit of cheese, but Hawkins and Brown was really annoying IMHO!

Oooh what if we sent Duffy???

I was just thinking about how with a slight edit we could've sent Goldfrapp - A&E :o :wub: It might have been a risky choice but I reckon it could've done quite well! ^_^

I was just thinking about how with a slight edit we could've sent Goldfrapp - A&E

I won't tell you what kind of edit I was advised to write, but I agree that we should send someone with some singing integrity. look at some of our winners and runners up - Katrina, Sonia, Cliff Richard, Lulu - all with recognised musical backgrounds

Now look at our recent efforts.

Daz Sampson - who?

Javine - who?

Jemini, Taurus, Sagittarius (whatever they were called) - who?

And anyone, who criticizes Andy's "best of a bad bunch" song? I live near Katie Price and I can always persuade her to pull out her pink catsuit and wail woefully for the UK instead....

The Revelations - What went wrong?

If it was a "choose the best wailing banshee" decision, they might have done a bit better.

urgh!

i missed the show, and have just listened to that song that'll represent us on popjustice.

its god awful. total c**p, i agree with ashley nul points here we come

andys song is ok but deffo not eurovision usual material but then again neither was lordi but still dont think it fair to well.
