Well, my local HMV used to have the Top 20 or so singles at the very back of the store, but they only sell the few most popular at the very front of the till now so the only way you can buy them is if you wait in the queue. :P

I would imagine that the big stores such as the London HMV will still dedicate a lot of their store space to singles. :)

Yeah, HMV in Oxford Street has loads :).

Hi Martin,

can you tell me if there's any sign of Jimmy Eat World in the chart?

No sign

If Duffy remains at No1 for a 5th week on Sunday it'll be the first time since 1992/1993 that 2 consecutive No1's have spent 5 or more weeks at No1!

5 Dec 1992 Whitney Houston I Will Always Love You 10

13 Feb 1993 2 Unlimited No Limit 5

In fact it only happened on THREE occasions in the 90's, the other 2 times being:

30 Mar 1991 Chesney Hawkes The One And Only 5

4 May 1991 Cher Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) 5

9 May 1992 KWS Please Don't Go 5

13 Jun 1992 Erasure Abba-esque EP 5

It's a real shame that some HMVs and Zavvis are no longer stocking singles or only in limited quantities. Singles get people into the store each week, and these people may buy more profitable items. I still prefer physical singles and hope they don't disappear. The singles section at the central London HMVs and Zavvis seem to be growing, especially for 7 inch and 12 inch vinyl singles. I was also shocked at all the vinyl albums available.

Re: Midweeks -- I know they aren't in today's top 40 albums, but I'd be interested in how Brian Kennedy and Benga are doing when the top 200 is available. Thank you.

Talking of Woolworths, I noticed that the singles chart top 20, on display in the shops, is exactly the same as the one, on their download site. Living between Oxfordshire and Berkshire, most Woolies are pretty small around here. I used to go to Reading, quite a bit, and they used to have a massive Woolies, with 4 entrances in 4 different streets. Now it`s a pokey place, and they no longer stock singles, but just display the top 20, on the wall. They even have Westlife at 3 this week, and Katie Melua is listed in the top 20 too. I think downloads are 59p there. The only place you can get singles in my overall area is HMV, and the best time to do that, is on a Monday morning. Otherwise the shelves are quite empty. Is the end of singles that close? My grandad was talking of sheet music, the other day. Telling me when all was listed was song titles, for buying the music there of. In that vain of downloads and double A sides, listed twice. With sheet music it was the same type of thing, but you had to take it home and play it on the piano (which everyone had obviously). Means album sales will increase further I believe, when hardily any older people will download anyway.

It`s right, thinking that the single was already dying anyway. When the single was still pretty stable, there were certain types of people, that would buy a 45. You had the fans, of the likes of Iron Maiden etc, who would buy their singles the first week of release (a select group), then the next week, the record would plummet like a piece of metal (pardon the pun)!! Then there were the folks, that though Will Young etc was sweet (arhh, the slightly older lady etc). The fan of Westlife/Boyzone/Daniel O` Donnell (your average, Irishlady). That group of people would not ever buy, any other single, they would just go out, when the artist in question, had a new release out. One good thing about the download is, it stops that type of thing happening, destroying the hype. Personally, I would love Duffy to stay at the top this week. Mainly because the hype, of "Charity" songs/previous pop idol hype, only clutters the charts up, with more hype, and any talent doesn`t get "found" by the buying public. It gets pushed down your throat, by people deciding that you must buy it. Looking at Duffy, then the "true" talent is not unjust. It just spoke for itself.

In a truely accurate chart should charity singles etc, actually be disqualified from the chart? Actually it might not be a bad idea, because they don`t actually sale on their own merit, of quality i.e. Elton John, your Band Aids, disaster fund songs etc.

Could we include anything to do with Simon Cowell, too!

I wouldn't be surprised if Leona ends up a No.1 by Sunday, when you think about it, after all the confusing 'combined' stuff gets sorted out, and with Sports Relief Friday, BIT is going to shoot up Itunes.
that's HILARIOUS!!!! the iTunes in USA is giving Duffy's Mercy FREE!

The Americans, obviously can`t understand Welsh  I mean, look at the great big star, that Shakin` Stevens became in the U.S. not!

Will the future be all this USB albums and singles etc... ?? I (like other people have said in here) prefer the Physical CD singles! But I order them online, because it is a 45 minute bus journey otherwise! Just to find out they dont even sell the bloody single i want! lol So at least if im online then i know that it will be delievered - Late or not It will be in my CD player when it turns up! :D lol

It looks as if the physical single will be all but dead within this decade sadly. The market is already 95% downloads : 5% physicals overall and as more and more record stores drop the format I can’t see myself being able to buy a CD single in 2012! TBH it only seems as if Dance and to a lesser extent Urban records benefit from them now days I guess the larger cities with club scenes will have places to buy singles... hence a supply compared to provincial towns where physicals are drying up big style. Sadly people are gonna have to move on to iPods and mp3 players to buy singles. In fact sooner than switching from analogue to digital TV’s!

In relation to double A sides for some reason ONE designated track must be on ALL formats regardless - i.e. why FITS will most likely enter again as a seperate entry.

according to Channel 4 teletext page 821 Duffy is selling 'twice as many copies' as One Republic on both charts...

I imagine that equates to something like 15k for Mercy and 7.5k for Stop and Stare

You are good at guessing and it looks right to me :o

I really do hope Leona doesn't get to number 1. I saw her on GMTV this morning and it made me cringe that she is becoming rather Diva like and a bit look at me I'm the star. Eventhough I do really like 'Better In Time' I'd rather just give money to charity instead of seeing her ego inflate evenmore than it already is

I couldn't disagree anymore, she hasn't changed one bit. I think it's a common misconception that she "loves herself" just because she's shy and quiet, although she has got more confident over time. B)
