Glasvegas lead race for number one

11:11 | Tuesday September 9, 2008

Source: MW

By Ben Cardew

Glasvegas have taken a commanding lead in the race for this week’s number one album, with their eponymous debut selling more than 22,000 copies on its first day of release.

The Columbia release is outselling its nearest competitor – The Verve’s Forth (Parlophone) – by more than three copies to one at this early stage.

Competition also comes in the shape of The Script’s The Script (RCA) and Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad (Def Jam), both of which are continuing to sell strongly.

New Kids On the Block also look set for a top ten placing with their new album The Block (Polydor), while fellow Polydor artist Bryn Christopher looks set to place in the top twenty with My World.

On the singles chart, nothing looks likely to shift Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl (Virgin) from the number one slot, although Cliff Richard’s Thank You For A Lifetime (EMI) is off to a strong start at retail, shifting almost 8,000 copies on its day of release.

Death comes too early

10:32 | Thursday September 11, 2008

By Ben Cardew

Metallica’s Death Magnetic has been released days ahead of schedule, after retailers broke the Friday embargo on sales.

The album, Metallica’s eight and first since 2003’s St Anger, was originally scheduled for release this Friday (September 12). However, it is believed that the band’s UK label Vertigo has now soft released the set after a number of retailers put it on sale earlier this week.

In midweek sales flashes today (Thursday), the album sat at 25, having sold 2,625 copies on CD.

Leading the albums field at the moment is Glasvegas’s eponymous debut (Columbia), which has sold more than 33,000 copies. Ladbrokes has opened a book on which of the two acts will top the charts this Sunday, with Glasvegas originally favourites at 1:2.

NO SALES INFO

I think (and hope) Kings of Leon will be top 3 by the end of the week... with Katy at #1 for yet another monotonous week :drama:

Glasvegas #1 and Cliff at #3, with Kings Of Leon #6, chart coming ASAP

1 Katy

2 PCD

3 Kings Of Leon

KOL won't be #1 by end of week on downloads only, PCD had pole position on iTunes last week for a number of days and still only made #3 behind two physically released tracks.

I sort of feel sorry for Cliff Richard - looks like he won't make it this decade

We only have a top 37 in the singles chart, Duffy, Flobots and Flo Rida is listed twice on the database, I wish they get it right as now it be the same all week.

Miley is up 1 in the singles and down 1 in the albums

Any news on Alphabeat in singles & albums please, also Sharleen's album ^_^ thanks

Cliff Richard :D nice to see him have another hit :o

KOL are also growing on me with their new song as i have only liked Fans and On Call from their last album -_-

I was pretty confident that Cliff would make the Top 3, but hesitated to commit to number one. Would be a shame to get so close and yet so far in some ways.
