September 14, 200816 yr I remember thinking back in the day that Five's last single, 'Closer To Me', was going to be a sure thing for #1. I seem to recall that it was a known thing that they were breaking up after that single so I thought it would definitely be a big hit for them. I couldn't believe it when they only got to #4.
September 15, 200816 yr A few of Oasis's early songs just missed out too, like Whatever, Roll With It, and Wonderwall. Blur stopped Roll With It, god knows about the other two. Whatever was blocked by East17 and Mariah Carey at Chrismas 1994 while Robson & Jerome beat Wonderwall to No1 in November 1995.
September 15, 200816 yr The alltime classic example Ultravox - Vienna blocked by Joe Dolce Music Theatre - Shaddup You Face.
September 15, 200816 yr The Darkness - Christmas Time (what should have been the Christmas number 1 that year but Mad World outsold it) God knows how that awful Gary Jules track made number 1 :puke: "Stop"; it was the SPICE GIRLS. "Me Against The Music" - I can't remember who pipped them, but Madonna and Britney not making #1 together was unthinkable. "Sacred Trust" - they were the favourites over Girls Aloud weren't they? Yes - Haha Spice Girls best song (IMO) didn't make number 1  It was ALL Over The Box (as it was important back then :drama:) I think Busted - Who's David beat Britney and Madge to number 1 - Coz I am sure i remember thinking that I didn't care who was number 1 as i Loved Both  Yeah OTV were faves over GA  it still baffles me as to what went wrong!
September 15, 200816 yr Let's see if they had a chance that particular week, here was the top8: 01 NE Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around 02 01 Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me 03 03 Darude - Sandstorm 04 02 Sonique - It Feels So Good 05 NE David Gray - Babylon 06 NE Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love (2000 remix) 07 NE Damage - Ghetto Romance 08 NE Girl Thing - Last One Standing They definitely could've done a lot better that week, but it was summertime so it was hard to beat all the dance anthems and Kylie's comeback. Thanks for this That brings back memories, I remember I regularly bought singles in their first week then before they became more expensive in the second week, and I'm sure Kylie was only ranked at #3 in Woolworths & I also bought the David Gray single, but thinking about it I'm sure the Damage single was ranked at #2 in Woolworths as that was their lead single from their 2nd album but it under-performed. It was definitely a huge and very pleasant surprise when Kylie topped the charts on that Sunday, I remember her getting very emotional, and I remember the tabloids were on her side that week after she famously got dumped by the BMG group after her indie Kylie "Impossible Princess" era by their record company head Simon Cowell who said to the effect that her career was over, so the tabloids talked up the David (Kylie) versus Goliath (Girl Thing) battle, because Simon Cowell back then was loathed as much as Pete Waterman was in the late 1980s........
September 15, 200816 yr Yeah OTV were faves over GA  it still baffles me as to what went wrong! I'm sure Pete Waterman said something about committing suicide if they failed to reach #1. But I do remember the show and I remember the look of shock when one of the only two great female singers Javine failed to make the line up. I also remember on the final night when the group was decided and Cheryl put in a shocking vocal performance so that Pete did his famous "I'm so sorry ....." speech, and then one of the two certs (the other was Nadine) failed to make the group......
September 15, 200816 yr God knows how that awful Gary Jules track made number 1 I must be the only person on BJ who actually loves that song. I much prefer it to the original ... you have to have images of Donny Darko running through your head to fully appreciate it though! And I'm a sucker for a man in a rabbit suit! So for me ... it was a well-deserved number 1. Norma Edited September 15, 200816 yr by Norma_Snockers
September 15, 200816 yr S Club's final single was kept off by a 4th week at No1 for R.Kelly. Supermen Lovers beaten by Bob The Builder's 2nd No1. Elvis Costello was going to get his first No1 in 1999 with She. Boyzone's I Love The Way You Love Me was kept off by a 6th week at No1 for Cher. Chicken Shed were tipped for Christmas No1 in 1997. September 15, 200816 yr I was fairly disappointed when Dannii Minogue's fantastic I Begin To Wonder was kept off by Xtina - Beautiful in its second week at #1 (IIRC) :(
September 15, 200816 yr Author Thanks for this That brings back memories, I remember I regularly bought singles in their first week then before they became more expensive in the second week, and I'm sure Kylie was only ranked at #3 in Woolworths & I also bought the David Gray single, but thinking about it I'm sure the Damage single was ranked at #2 in Woolworths as that was their lead single from their 2nd album but it under-performed. Thanks for the background info as usual :) I'm so glad Kylie proved Simon wrong, he's such an idiot. He wouldnt know talent even if it slapped him in the face
September 15, 200816 yr I remember thinking that Wings "Live and let die" must have topped the uk charts and was surprised that not only did it not reach #1, but I think it only reached #9 or something. I don't think any of the James Bond theme tunes ever topped the uk chart btw.
September 15, 200816 yr I think Busted - Who's David beat Britney and Madge to number 1 - Coz I am sure i remember thinking that I didn't care who was number 1 as i Loved Both  I think you probably mean 'Crashed The Wedding' if it was around that period. I was fairly disappointed when Dannii Minogue's fantastic I Begin To Wonder was kept off by Xtina - Beautiful in its second week at #1 (IIRC) :( As was I. :( But I was amazed to even see it get that high, I never thought it would. When it was #2 in the midweeks I was just praying she'd at least hold that position. As for songs I was convinced were going to be #1, ummm. I was pretty certain Fast Food Rockers were going to, Janet Jackson's 'All For You' as someone else said and I was seriously devastated that week as I wanted her to. I was also quite certain Jakatta's 'American Dream' would make it in early 2001. Also The week Dannii Minogue released 'You Won't Forget About Me', I though that and Daniel Bedingfield's comeback single would occupy the top 2 but neither made it. I was also certain Alex Parks would do it with 'Maybe That's What It Takes'. I'll think of more later.
September 15, 200816 yr I seem to recall B*Witched's Jesse Hold On being an expectant No.1 by Woolies/Asda in late 1999...what fools, seeing as Christina Aguilera's debut single Genie In A Bottle came out in the same week...even Ann Lee beat them  and a Whitney Houston/George Michael duet from 2000, If I Told You That, only got to low top ten, despite being heavily hyped and expected to top the chart... All Saints, had a couple of No.7 hits, War Of Nerves and All Hooked Up, surely they must have been expected to get to No.1, but I can't remember exactly... and of course Hear'Say's Everybody in late 2001, it was a big shock when that only got to No.4!
September 15, 200816 yr Author perhaps Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You I hated it, so I was pleased it was #2.
September 15, 200816 yr I think you probably mean 'Crashed The Wedding' if it was around that period. Yes your right :o I knew it was one of Busted's tracks
September 15, 200816 yr Yeah OTV were faves over GA  it still baffles me as to what went wrong!  In 2003, people were certain that the Darkness' IBIATCL would knock Black Eyed Peas off No1. Edited September 15, 200816 yr by DitzyNizzy
September 15, 200816 yr Robbie - Angles -_- can't believe it didn't get there Angles  Shayne Ward- If Thats OK With You (though i didn't like it at all i thought he had a big fanbase) Maybe not expecting it to be #1 but i was surprised at Cascada- What Hurts The Most only getting to #10.
September 15, 200816 yr Well idk if it was "expected" to go number one.. but it SHOULD of been number one. "Beware of the Dog" - Jamelia. I wish some of the good UK acts were brought to America, I could of really saw that shattering the charts here tbh. It's such a quality pop song, and a surprise it never went number one in the UK imho.
