October 29, 200816 yr All Reality show winners.... :/ No, before anyone gets upset, Gareth didn't win  Edited October 29, 200816 yr by val4jadan
October 29, 200816 yr It's just lazy research and shoddy journalism. The "biggest hit of the decade" comes from The Sun and they've combined it with the HMV quote which doesn't say this at all.
October 29, 200816 yr Don't dismiss talent shows J - they have been around for decades and some of our biggest music and comedy stars found fame through them. The difference between modern day shows and those in the past is that TV is involved. Although the Micky Mouse Club on US TV was a showcase for new talent and Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake featured on there. Frank Sinatra was also discovered via a talent show. IMO Simon went all out to find a global talent show winner of his own - something he could claim for himself. Some say Will is one of Simon Cowell's success stories but that's one thing he cannot take credit for. Will may be a domestic artist but he is successful in his own right. Cowell is attempting to re-write the record books, but the stats will always speak for themselves. Edited October 29, 200816 yr by munchkin
October 29, 200816 yr personally i don't see what peoples problem with reality tv show winner is - many people have no idea how to crack the music industry and these shows r a good way to get people heard and noticed! - look at will young, girls aloud, leona lewis, kelly clarkson - these artists all came from singing shows - im glad for them becasue i think they r all excellent artists and pop music would not be the same today without them - the shows do create some awful people 2, yes, but for the talented its an excellent way to get them noticed imo.
October 29, 200816 yr I am sure Leona will Make it to the top spot! Slightly off topic but is she performing on the X-Factor? Yes, but not until the 15th November and she's likely to perform Run to promote the album as its out 2 days thereafter.

But if they were so 'talented' then they wouldn't need a TV show! Leona and Amy Winehouse both went to The Brits School and Amy found her way just fine! Will Young is the only true 'artist' to come from a reality show that's lasted so far and I've said before I'm not sure if Leona would ever be able to without Simon Cowell personally. Anyway most people these days who audition for these shows don't go on there because they really want to be singers, most of them just want to be FAMOUS! If most of these people were so talented they wouldn't need to go on a reality show and have people writing their songs and telling them what to do for the rest of their career! Will was unfortunately just a one off! It's not that hard these days to get a gig! Record your songs, put them on myspace and then e-mail various venues that would like someone like you and who knows? maybe someone will spot you! That's what many singers and friends bands I know do! At least people will actually know and buy your stuff for your music rather than because you were on a reality show!
October 29, 200816 yr I suppose its for a good cause but......Why X-factor? Its just publicity for the show and all these no-talents getting to no.1 is awful-lets hope its not the best seller of the decade! What a gullible country we live in!
October 29, 200816 yr Leona and Amy Winehouse both went to The Brits School and Amy found her way just fine! Will Young is the only true 'artist' to come from a reality show that's lasted so far ... Why didn't Will find his way "just fine" then? Surely by your logic if he was so talented he wouldn't need a TV show?
October 29, 200816 yr Basically, we are in short supply of the CDs and instead of having the public think we are lazy buggers we'll twist it and make it seem like we are selling loads :P
October 29, 200816 yr Why didn't Will find his way "just fine" then? Surely by your logic if he was so talented he wouldn't need a TV show? Well that's the thing! He went to ArtsEd so I really don't see why he went on it but he was a one off! On X Factor now if you have any sort of identity then you're not allowed through because you don't inpersonate anyone yet they slag off inpersonators at the same time.
October 29, 200816 yr It's a shame when these 'experts' like the guy from HMV have such short memories, the decade is the past 10 years since 2000, not the past 2 years! Personally I think the sales will decline next week quite drastically. And I am predicting about 350-400k by Sunday.

October 29, 200816 yr It might not even make into this decade's top five debut weeks, Hear n Say's song sold (I think) something like 550k first week and there are several big opening weeks during the first few years of the decade such as Shaggy's It Wasn't Me but we all know this just just for the hype and to get more people to buy the single (and it might be working).
October 29, 200816 yr Well said Grandwicky. Will Young may have used Pop Idol as a means into the business but he has worked really hard since then honing his skills as a songwriter & taking control of his own career & this is why he has had longevity. I can't see any of the crop from X Factor doing the same, including Leona. Successful they may be if you count record sales as the only measure of success but they will always be controlled. Simon Cowell won't have it any other way.
October 29, 200816 yr Let'em have their #1 single on their CV's, it won't be long before most of them will be asking, "do you want fries with that?"

Simon Cowell won't have it any other way. Let's be honest, there's little difference between Will and Leona. And dressing it up by pretending he wasn't a reality star and thus didn't gain much of his fanbase from the Idol exposure doesn't cut it. It's as much a fact as Leona using X-Factor to get into the business after working really hard before deciding to go for the audition. In my opinion they're both extremely talented. They've both worked/ing hard at songwriting. They're both clearly a cut above anyone else who has come out of these shows. Whether Leona can continue along the Will vein it is hard to predict, but she, like he, needed the reality show boost in a UK music industry whose AnR is too often fixated with middle-of-the-road indie dross for the sake of credibility, when 99% of all these bands barely have more than one decent single.
October 29, 200816 yr Well I doubt it's going to surpass the 1,789,000 copies Will Young shifted in 2002, so no. The No1 record has shifted over 300k 9 times so far this decade: 01. Will Young - Anything Is Possible (1,108,000) - w/b 03/03/02 02. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody (850,000) - w/b 24/03/02 03. Shayne Ward - That's My Goal (742,180) - w/b 25/12/05 04. Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This (571.253) - w/b 24/12/06 05. Hear'Say - Pure And Simple (549,823) - w/b 18/03/01 06. Will Young - Anything Is Possible (377,000) - w/b 10/03/02 07. Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It? (359,639) - w/b 24/12/00 08. Shaggy feat. Ricardo "RIKROK" Ducent - It Wasn't Me (345,498) - w/b 04/03/01 09. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head (306,648) - w/b 23/09/01 Source: M*rt!n
October 29, 200816 yr St Winifred's School Choir have all been number one too - don't think for a second it means any of these gullible fools will still be releasing records in 2010. Can't we ban charity singles? Just have a box next to the checkout with a 'stick £2 in here if you agree' sign instead? These idiots are simply buying another piece of plastic to sit next to their tatty puce-coloured Alba CD portable CD player which you need to kick to get working along with their copies of Band Aid 20, 'A Moment Like This', 'That's My Goal', 'Everygreen', at least two versions of 'Unchained Melody' and Candle in the f***ing wind. Manufacturing these products is such a waste of natural resources.
