Leon Jackson - OK, so he had a No3 single, but he was (a) beaten by a singer from a parody of talent shows, and (B) had an album I don't even remember troubling the higher reaches of the chart.

Anastacia and Dido have both sadly flopped hard this year.

And I cannot for the like of me understand why?

Hate to say it, but GNR did flop on the albums front...

Wrong week to release it, unfortunately. It was #1 worldwide that week and sold more than AC/DCs Black Ice did in the UK, but the label underestimated The Killers popularity.

However, overall it's been a good year for rock and metal. Kings Of Leon are selling incredibly well, Metallica very deservedly topped the albums charts for two straight weeks as well as impacting on the Top-20 singles charts, and AC/DC proved that REAL rock music is still alive by beating off competition from indie band Kaiser Chiefs.

So, in conclusions, the years winners and losers:

Winners - Metal/Hard-rock acts and Bubblegum Pop

Losers - Indie

How do you define bubblegum pop? If you're talking about Britney, OK. If you're talking about Girls Aloud

I heard Absolutely Positively for the first time(!) last week. It's about the most lacklustre comeback record ever. For the woman responsible for Left Outside Alone and I'm Outta Love, she has really fallen off her pedestal...

Kylie Minogue - her latest underperformed badly.

Assuming you mean the last single, it was a download only release where she's mainly a physical seller with her hardcore fanbase, and they released a cheap video of it two weeks after the single had fallen out of the top 75.

Extremely poor material is the answer!

The View haven't even released their new album yet. It comes out in January just one single flopped. Although I agree they won't be as big as the last time around

Their album will bomb completely. Even all the flops Harve mentioned had decent sized lead singles. Shame really, I thought it was far better than anything off their debut bar 'Wasted Little DJs'.

New Kids On The Block - Comeback singles charted at #34 and #81, The album reached #16 in the charts and has sold 15,000

Dido - Comeback single reached #54 and the album has sold a fraction of her previous albums.

Others include -

Same Difference

The Feeling

McFly

Sugababes

Anastacia

Christina Aguilera

Rather than poor material I'd blame poor single choices. Heavy Rotation is such a brilliant album but like you said, Absolutely Positively is hardly gonna grab anyone's attention.

Kanye West is another one. Big lead single but on the album front had flopped as it only went to number 11 and bar The Collage Dropout which went platinum anyway all the others have gone top 2 with at least two big singles. The Collage Dropout (Jesus Walks), ( Late Registration (Diamonds, Gold-Digger), Graduation (Stronger, Homecoming)

I really dont think Same Difference have flopped. Considering the fact that they are cheap pop (and I do like them but it is true) they have done way better than I expected. For their standards, its not really that much of a flop.
Alesha Dixon will. It's early days yet, but her album went in at the low twenties and I don't think the public really sees her as a proper pop star. Though the second single is quite good. Watch this space.. :)

Well sugababes obviously, think they have reached a point of no return now.

Christina, the feeling, anastacia to name some others.

I actually think britney doesnt seem to be doing so great either, her album seems to be falling fast. Not a flop as such but thank heavens for the xfactor, thats all i'm saying.

And no way did alesha dixon flop, she has done unbelievable.

Most of the indei style bands have experienced disappointing sales especially razorlight, kaiser chiefs who album sjust plummted down the chrats,,im very disappointed with snow patrols performance although at least the album is still top 20

And ironically, they are probably top 20 still, due to revived interest in them after Leonas version of 'run' was was so popular.

So are you trying to say Britney Spears is bubblegum pop...but Girls Aloud isn't?

If so...

Ummm. No.

In the UK she sold 75k+ the first week, and even though she fell ten places she sold more then 50k her second week. How is that a flop, especially considering it's the best one of her studio albums have done since her sophomore album? Womanizer has also sold just under 200k, and has spent 6 weeks in the top ten, and looks set to have 1-2 more...something she hasn't done since her debut single.

sales > chart positions

Not to mention she has the highest debut worldwide album sales this year for a female artist, selling 816,000 her first week.

People's interpretations of flops are very different...

Some of these indie bands like Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs etc. may have not sold well, but they'll still sell out all the arenas they play. Is impossible to say they've flopped really as they're the real winners at the end of the day, not their label...

I think what this year has proved to me is in the current climate, the name of your band won't get you anywhere. You HAVE to come up with a good lead single or you're basically screwed. Hopefully we'll see some record labels learning about this next year...

Do you not think more was expected of them though with all the XF exposure?! The single has boombed down the charts too and looks like a McFly chart run...13-30-66 :(

While I think it's kinda unfortunately over for say The Feeling and Anastacia, but McFly and the Sugababes should be OK in my opinion. Well, I'm not too sure about the Sugababes because I'm not a huge fan, in fact I haven't bought a single song/ album of theirs, but it wasn't long ago that they were doing really well and Girls seems to be everywhere. I doubt they'll just give up too, without a fight.

With McFly, although their singles have flopped, in my opinion, for McFly, Lies did good. The others were on the free album but Lies was only on the deluxe. I know that compared to a lot of bands out there, it isn't good at all but Lies did good on Itunes which was a change for McFly and it wasn't even the strongest song on the album (while OFTR & Do Ya were right down the bottom of the list!). I just think that they'll slowly get it right, but wont be giving up at all while being on their own label and selling out gigs alright. It's doubtful that they'll ever do as well as in 2004 again though.

I'm undecided on the future of Same Difference but I'm sure Christina Aguilera will pop up again at some point soon. One flop isn't going to stop a big act like her, nor will it stop Madonna, Kylie and the lot. Oasis will obviously be here to stay for a long while yet too. Boyzone? hmmm.

It's been an interesting year in music to be honest, a lot of interesting flops and hits.
