December 24, 200816 yr I think so many people are off here. This really is just going to lead to more musical malignancy. Supermarket/Internet domination is nothing short of a poor thing for a vibrant mainstream music scene...meh. I quite agree. Acts like Westlife will probably rule the music scene even more, but we've still got HMV for the time being. Generally if I want a more obscure album I always use Play anyway... much easier to find the release and less hassel.
December 24, 200816 yr TBH! I would love to shop online (I do shop online with HMV.co.uk and Play.com anyway) but I think this is when Digital albums will start going through the Roof!
December 24, 200816 yr This is terrible news, but it was always going to happen given who owns and supplies them.... :( We own ourselves, Zavvi Entertainment Group ;) And can I just say there's some ignorant people in here <_< Some people work for Zavvi in here and our JOBS are in the balance. Anyhow administration does not mean the end, look at Whittards and the majority of The Officers Club.

Anyhow administration does not mean the end, look at Whittards and the majority of The Officers Club. It is always the staff that suffer from the bad decisions of the management though You as one of the footsoldiers had no say in pricing but the brainless cretins in head office have possibly cost you your job by setting stupid prices for items available much cheaper elsewhere Surely you can't defend the pricing policy of Zavvi ?
December 24, 200816 yr I actually thought Zavvi were OK on price and on many items cheaper than HMV when I have compared the two!

Well actually yes. I mean you are so wide of the mark you're in France. As above ^, when you shop around you will notice it's not like you say. Just like any shop certain items will be priced higher albeit a supermarket or another entertainment retailer, that's why you have the option to shop around. Most Zavvi stores are actually profitable, and certain items we don't get much say on the prices, por example, Disney DVD's. I mean feel free to find the Friends boxset cheaper than £49.99 I can't really say anymore than that at the moment. And my ignorance statement was more aimed at people like Esmerelda and lightyears ^_^

December 24, 200816 yr Looks like JJB, Jessops and Wilkinson's could be next.. :o TBH, I've never heard of Whittard and The Officer's Club. Zavvi, I've bought some stuff online before. TBH I hope JJB goes..That place is a disgrace, it's seriously outdated and sells items at insane prices! I had to laugh was looking for a basketball and they had a sign up saying up to 95% OFF...There was only one item that was above 70% off in there and it was 80%..These shops shouldn't be allowed to advertise huge reductions and then offer say one item at a huge reduction and the rest at 10%! Sorry for anyone who shop's in there but everytime I go in there it's CHAV central!

Yes there £2-£3 more for some items but think of the costs of staff, store, lighting, heating, shelving, transportation to the stores, till rolls,signs..etc etc... Although I agree High stores will always be more expensive due to these factors, I don't think they are overpriced on purpose! Well soon it will be Bye Bye high street, not only in the entertainment industry but everything will end up this way soon.....
December 24, 200816 yr This is a bad thing - for several reasons. Firstly, the jobs on the line, secondly, for those of us for various reasons do not/cannot shop online, there will be much less choice. I tend to go to both Zavvi and HMV regularily and think both between them have great deals for entertainment. Thirdly, this will be bad for the high street and the music industry. BAD TIMES.
December 25, 200816 yr This is terrible news, but the optimist in me tells me that unlike Woolworths Zavvi might survive. I've got all my fingers crossed. I don't mind buying CDs online, but i love shopping and love looking around shops, especially music shops. I'll be absolutely devistated if Zavvi does go. If HMV goes i'll be mortified :banghead: I'll be chaining myself up to the store railings like the suffragettes I just feel for all the people who have jobs on the line. It makes you think which other shops might also be on the verge of closeing :( Edited December 25, 200816 yr by Glyn
December 26, 200816 yr It doesn't look very rosy for the single market though, downloads will soon have 100% control over the singles chart, hence a new chart, instead of a combined chart we have a Download Singles chart, it looks very worrying. The iTunes thread will become the mid chart That is like my nightmare! I know physical singles are in a cycle of ever decreasing returns (sell less, so stocked less, so sell less, so stocked less ) except X-factor ones!) but i want itunes monopoly eroded a bit, if we must lose them. Other download sites seem to be gaining in consumer awareness, but in terms of purchasing i don't know how itunes market share is changing (does anyone have figures?) Good riddance! Zavvi is bloody awful. Every CD/DVD seems to cost a good £1/2+ more than at HMV, they have a much smaller range of stock, they stock less singles, no vinyls, stores awful to navigate. Truly a terrible shop. I pray HMV never goes under. This is Zavvi's problem- most things seem to cost a few £s more than HMV and student discount only counts on non-discounted items (ie. why bother?) rather than HMV where it covers everything. For me, this makes HMV prices quite competitive, often even vs. online. Remember a good few years ago when it was the other way though? Virgin used to be the decent shop and HMV were always like £16 for any CD! We own ourselves, Zavvi Entertainment Group ;) And can I just say there's some ignorant people in here <_< Some people work for Zavvi in here and our JOBS are in the balance. Anyhow administration does not mean the end, look at Whittards and the majority of The Officers Club. Matt, i'm really sorry you're going through this, it can't be fun not knowing whats happening and having to look elsewhere in the current financial weather. Any news for you yet? However, this being an open forum people are going to say what they like some of which might seem ignorant, but it is merely directed at the company (who like any other have "made mistakes" and pissed people off) so i'd say try not to take it personally- your view as an employee (and music fan- must make the job more fun) will always differ to that of a consumer with no reason for loyalty. Good luck with it all anyway :) Baracca, do you work for Play? you've namechecked more times than i care to count- talking of consumerist principles and not getting ripped off, check the prices of CDs on other websites from time to time! Play are good but they ain't always so cheap on everything in comparison! Personally sad if Zavvi goes, i think they need to revise their pricing and store sizes, layouts, stock etc. but its always been HMV vs. Zavvi on high st and without a real competitor to HMV this can only be worse for the consumer  Edited December 26, 200816 yr by spicefunk
December 26, 200816 yr I wouldn't have thought HMV would rise their prices up IF Zavvi do go bust? Surely they want more people in, not force more people out to illegal downloading and supermarkets? Well, unless they're bloody stupid. Maybe the loss of Zavvi could be the beginning for the digital album era? All it needs is for 7digital or iTunes to lower the prices of digital albums to £4/5/6 and they could take off. Who knows. And for internet items, there's not that much difference in HMV, Play and Amazon. Often they're there or thereabouts the same prices on most items. Amazon's would probably come out for the cheapest price, but I just can't stand the layout on Amazon at all.

The student card actually counts for all products, except console bundles, gift cards, and iTunes vouchers (and still being half tired I've probably missed something there ). No news yet as I'm off today, so I probably won't hear anything until tomorrow at the earliest.
December 26, 200816 yr it is the end of the music industry!!!!! Album sales will decrease by 50% next year leading to most acts being dropped leading to a number 1 album selling around 10.000 copies!!!! it's a real shame!!! sales were so healthy this year it's weird that Woolworths and Zavvi shut down!!!!

December 26, 200816 yr TOTAL over-reaction! The same people who bought music this year will probably still want it next year, but will go to different places to buy it. I agree, I can foresee a rapid increase in the number of legally downloaded albums over the next 12 months.
December 27, 200816 yr Woolworths and Zavvi shut down!!!! Zavvi is not shutdowm yet still in administration, it might get rescued
