Before downloads kicked in, scoring a big hit in the UK usually meant that you had enough momentum to instantly score another hit with whatever single was released next. However these days it seems that a still ubiquitous previous single can damage the chances of any future singles (see Sam Sparro). Following the massive No.1 The Promise, The Loving Kind by Girls Aloud is currently languishing at No.40 on iTunes at the moment, it will take one hell of a physical boost for it to climb up to the No.9 low of Can't Speak French and See The Day. So I was wondering how many acts (with a few hits to their name) have followed their biggest hits with their smallest, not just in the modern era but from whenever. I'll start:

Fergie

Big Girls Don't Cry #2 (her highest peaking single)

Clumsy #62 (her lowest peaking single)

at least Gabriella has recovered now

had Estelle's No Substitute Love gone a few places lower, that would have been her smallest hit...so odd that it flopped quite so much after a No.1 single and top ten album had suggested quite a bit of further potential

Clumsy was a download only though in the end as far as I can remember. Gabriella Cilmi or Hard Fi are maybe better examples.

I have another one:

Sam Sparro

Black And Gold #2

21st Century Life #44

(Both on physical release)

Clumsy wouldn't have done much better with a physical release, maybe low top 40 at the very very best, which still would have been her smallest hit by a wide margin

Hips Don't Lie completely and utterly overshadowed Illegal, which is a shame as the latter is gorgeous

Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!) #12

Make Me Wanna Scream #24

Probably not the best example but The 411 did have their biggest hit Dumb (#3) followed by their last and least sucsessful Teardrops (#23) -_-

Teardrops- although a nice song- was a c**p 3rd choice single. :(

Scissor Sisters, erm trying to off the top of my head to remember their #1 hit and the follow up smaller hit, but guess I've had too much Turkey and Sherry right now to know or care - lol.

Merry Christmas

p.s.

Wish I saw them live at Trafalger Square that time!

Actually, Akon released Pot Of Gold in 2005 (as a follow-up to the top 5 smash "Belly Dancer (Bananza)") which didn't even make the UK Top 100 (it peaked at No.127 or something, I really can't remember the exact position).

I thought whenever wherever sold more?

I've never heard anything as very, very boring as that flopped Emma song.

Yeah they had their biggest hit (IDFLD) and followed it with their 4 smallest (aside from the 1st release of Laura). The next 3 singles totally bombed, but they made pretty bad single choices and they all had abysmal tracklistings. I remember Jake Shears admitting that they messed up the tracklistings and that the final formats were boring and unenticing.

Is it just me or are people just putting two-hit wonders in?

I was thinking about this actually - it's quite rare for artists to go from extreme highs to extreme lows - it happened fairly gradually for Madonna and Kylie (with a second/third single bridging the gaps for both, and their number ones weren't even their biggest hits).
