Posted January 12, 200916 yr It was announced today that 51 stores previously owned by Woolworths are now to become Iceland stores creating 2500 new jobs... its sad that nobody wanted to buy the business and I doubt Iceland will stock music in the future!!! Still there are new jobs in the pipeline... so its good news after all the job loss news!
January 12, 200916 yr Ohh Yeah that's good. But I bloody hate iceland with a passion, although I must admit I always buy the Sour Apple shots before I go out on Fridays £2 for 4! haha.
January 12, 200916 yr That sounds pointless as we already have an Iceland in the high street which was just a couple of stores away from Woolworths, unless Iceland are going to branch out to stock other things rather than Frozen Food.
January 12, 200916 yr Author Isn't it Iceland a food store? So why stock music? Its a supermarket like Tesco, Sainsbury, etc... so you never know! I know our local one sells electronic goods and frozen foods.

Same I guess that's why there only taking 50 odd stores :D Edited January 12, 200916 yr by Chris J.
January 12, 200916 yr i got chucked out of my iceland so if my woolies becomes one i won't be going, it seems pointless having two.

If your town already has an Iceland it's highly unlikely that a new one will replace your Woolworths. There were more than 51 Woolworths stores remember. My town doesn't have an Iceland any more, it closed a few years ago, so I doubt we'll be getting a new one.
January 12, 200916 yr About 40 of them are going to be opened in the South East too? Looks like the North's gonna get hit hard by the recession...
January 12, 200916 yr it'll just be plain old Iceland. A lot fo Woolies premises had food licenses already so it'll be easy for Iceland to set up in those ones.
January 12, 200916 yr For anyone cares, these are the ones Iceland have bought according to the BBC website: Alton, Barnsley, Belper, Bethnal Green, Bexhill On Sea, Bicester, Billericay, Blandford Forum, Bodmin, Boreham Wood, Bow, Braintree, Broadstairs, Devizes, Exmouth, Fraserburgh, Frome, Greenford, Hackney, Hailsham, Harold Hill, Haverhill, Herne Bay, Hexham, Highgate, Honiton, Kilburn High Road, Leyton, Malvern, Matlock, Mill Hill, Minehead, Monmouth, Morpeth, Morriston, Newtownards, Palmers Green, Pinner (Rayner's Lane), Palmers Green, Plumstead, Pontypool, Poplar, Portslade, Ringwood, St Neots, Stoke Newington, Strood, Sudbury, Swaffham, Wakefield, Wallington, Whitstable I swear that's 52 but maybe I can't count.
January 13, 200916 yr My friend worked in a Woolworths at my home town of Nantwich, and she says thats becoming a Wilkinson's. How boring a statement does that sound? ^^^ Uni life sure is crazy these days.
January 13, 200916 yr My friend worked in a Woolworths at my home town of Nantwich, and she says thats becoming a Wilkinson's. How boring a statement does that sound? ^^^ Au contraire. Wilkinsons is the HEIGHT of civilisation and excitement. And at least they don't provide employment for Kerry Katona.
January 14, 200916 yr My friend worked in a Woolworths at my home town of Nantwich, and she says thats becoming a Wilkinson's. How boring a statement does that sound? ^^^ Uni life sure is crazy these days. There are two main reasons for Woolies going out of business. One is the credit crunch. And the other one - Wilkinson's selling stuff cheaper than Woolies did.
January 15, 200916 yr I wonder what shall become of Cupar, St Andrews and Dundee (Wellgate) Cupar still had staff in a couple of days after it shut and is my local store :( Dundee's is huge easily on of the biggest retail unit in Dundee City Centre behind Primark, New Look (Overgate & Wellgate), M&S, Debenhams and BHS
January 15, 200916 yr But I bloody hate iceland with a passion, although I must admit I always buy the Sour Apple shots before I go out on Fridays £2 for 4! haha. That doesn't sound bad at all, I'll have to check my local Iceland for them
January 15, 200916 yr My mum used to work in Woolworths, and she said Wooiles 30 years ago was much like Wilkinsons is now. Most of the Woolworths i've been into are usually just down the street from an Iceland. God knows whats going to replace Woolies down our high street. The only 3 big name shops here now are Boots, Smiths and M&S (and even that has renamed itself M&S Outlet) We've got a Morrisons just off the highstreet and a Tesco a bit further still.
