Hi everyone

I'm interested to know what methodologies people use for calculating their charts. Is it based on numbers of listens in a week? Do you have a formula for calculating who appears where? I'd be interested to see how all the charts differ.

I just have a look at the release schedule and see what I like that's out in the next few weeks and add it to my chart. Then I just order them depending on how much I'm into the song at the time. If I listened to the same songs more than 2 or 3 times a week I'd base it on listens but I tend to get bored of songs quickly if I have them on repeat. If I based it on listens, songs on my chart could have runs like this [01-37-x-15-09-x-x-24] which is just too messy for me. My chart ends up being like the real top 40, just with songs I like.

I have my top 50 as a playlist on iTunes, new songs that I love get added to the playlist as 'chart breakers' and some will get added into the main chart at the weekend, whilst some will never make the chart at all...

then I just order the selected 50 songs into the order that I am liking them at that moment in time

I just work it out from the ones that were in the chart last week...and songs that have grown on me sufficiently/just be heard and loved in that particular week...

I then order them on how much i have loved them over the week :D

I'm with Aaron tbh, I just order songs depending on how much I like them at the end of the week. If I've listened to a song a lot that week, either on the radio, personally or in a club, it'll probably rise quite a bit, whereas songs I don't listen to generally fall quickly. I add songs whenever I feel like it, I can be quite infamous for charting some songs really late because its taken me ages to like them
They are ordered VERY precisely on how much i've liked the song over the week, though often it ends up being a "snapshot" of the day i do the chart. I listen to my top 40-ish every week to make sure i've done it right. I use excel too, very fast. I do sales as if they are popularity bars. On the document i also have a total sales column so i can add up my YE chart automatically :cheer: . I'm trying not to be too random though, despite how random my chart is :P. A current song will generally get priority over an old song, though whether it is "current" or not isn't based on release dates, its based on when i first heard it myself. I try not to have songs dropping out the top 10 aswell. Having sales helps as you can decide "did i like this song more last week?" and if yes then i make sure sales decrease and probably position decrease, as its difficult to tell where the week ends and starts :P.
I echo Aaron's post, base the chart on how much I like the track each week. Usually every Saturday, after I post the new chart on Fridays, I re-value the chart and spend 10 mins each day to assess it on music taste, and add any new tracks that's beginning to take effect on me.
i REALLY dont get people who only chart what's currently in the chart... it's like.. well how is it a PERSONAL CHART? I base it on what i listen to and like most that week, new release or not....
I do my top 40 current faves and then my top 40 most played, give the number one on each chart 40 points - the number 40 on each chart 1 point, add the two together and end up with an overall chart. 50% personal choice, 50% playcount

I base mine broadly on the release schedule (I generally tend to chart songs 4 weeks in advance). These days I am more flexible due to the download era, but I like to keep mine as near to a real chart as I can.

I chart songs on how much I like them in the week - I give it some thought during the week too.

Umm...because we're charting the current releases that we like? It's not like anyone gets the actual top 40 and rearranges it in the order that they like the songs.

Maybe if my listening patterns were different I'd agree but hammering a song 15 times a week isn't for me, songs are lucky to get that many plays from me in a few months.

do you also chart album tracks/b-sides/rarities etc... too? I think only then can it truly reflect your current favourite songs of the week

my chart may look completely random sometimes but you can always guarantee that I am charting my 50 most loved tracks of the week, whatever source they have come from be it singles/albums/the interweb etc...

I agree, I just don't have the time to listen to songs hundreds of times...sometimes my No.1 will only have 6 or 7 plays a week and less than 50 in its entire chart life

A mixture of what I've played and what I really like.

E.G, Kid Cudi, dont like the song but I have listened to it a few times so it has been charted.

Oh I have time, I just listen to hundreds or tracks a week, just once or twice. Since March I've only listened to four tracks over 50 times and one of those is from 2004 so an 'airplay' chart doesn't really work for me. I'd rather chart a current release that I listened to once that week over an album track from a few years ago that I listened to once or twice.

Also if there is an album release that is doing well and play it most of the time, like KoL's album, it can effect the #1 track, as I have KoL at #1 with Use Somebody this week for the past 6 weeks.

Same here ^_^ based on how much I like them in the week, as Andre said clubs and other things have effect on my chart.

I chart whatever i've listened to in a particular week  (as long as i like it...)

Aled finds some of my runs quite strange. For example:

Nelly ft Fergie - Party People (5,OUT)

Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest For The Wicked (7,OUT)

Since i increased my chart to a Top40 these have bcome less likely but occasionally similar runs are achieved. Eg:

Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing (12,10,OUT)

Those are quite weird chart runs, I guess it shows how quickly you can go off a song. I'd be interested to see how my chart would look based on listens. I have Last.FM so I could probably find something to work it out actually. I'm sure you'd be able to tell whenever there's a BJSC going on - at the moment my weekly top tracks are dominated by semi 2 songs.
