Posted February 22, 200916 yr Chart Commentary 22nd Feb 2009 -------------- :cheer:  :cheer: -------------- Brits http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1790090.JPG Let's start with this week's chart commentary with the biggest happening of the week: The Brit Awards. This year the biggest winner was Duffy who collected three awards: Best British Female Solo Act, Best British Breakthrough Act and Best British Album (with Rockferry). Kings Of Leon was another big winner with 2 trophies: Best International Group and Best International Album. Other winners were Katy Perry (Best International Female Solo Act), Elbow (Bet British Group), Kanye West (Best International Male Solo Artist), Girls Aloud (Best British Single for The Promise) and Pet Shop Boys (Outstanding Contribution To Music). -------------- Singles http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/CDR6764.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1796062.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/88697412182.JPG The Brits also had a big effect on the UK charts this week seeing the winners all climbing back up or re-appearing in the chart. Whilst Lily Allen and Lady Gaga were non movers in the singles chart at number 1 and 2 for the 4th week in a row, Kings Of Leon moved up significantly thanks to the Brits. Use Somebody is back in the top 10 after 2 weeks of absence and top 3 after 9 weeks and spends its 22nd week in the top 75. Their previous hit, Sex On Fire is an eternal hit too, spending its 24th week in the chart and all inside the top 25, with just one week long outside the top 20 (#23 two weeks ago). The former number 1 in 2008 climbed this week from 19 to 14. With the help of the physical release of Omen, The Prodigy climbed up from number 8 to the top 4. Omen is the first hit for the band since 2005 when a remix release of Voodoo People and Out Of Space reached number 20. The last time we saw them in the top 10 was way back in 2002 with Baby's Got A Temper reaching #5. Their new album, Invaders Must Die is out on Monday 23rd of February on 4 formats: CD, CD+DVD, Deluxe Box Set, LP. Interestingly though the song Omen will be named just O in Germany. :o The physical release of Shontelle's T-shirt is due on the 23rd February, so this Monday but if the single will get any higher than this week is questionable seeing the download entries of both Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson. I didn't know first I should mention the physical release of Single Ladies from Beyonce. There were so much going on that didn't help the single going up: the Brits, the song vanishing from the iTunes chart before re-appearing again and the fact that the physical single has almost died out. Well I guess the idea to release Single Ladies on physical format came a bit late from her label: the song was a B side to If I Were A Boy but than on downloads alone as an album track it climbed up quite quickly and spent the last 6 weeks in the top 10 reaching its peak (#7) three times at. This week the physical single hasn't helped anything and she dropped from her peak to number 8 this week. Now let's move one, and make way to the fantastic Halo! The Pussycat Dolls are number 10 this week with Whatcha Think About that. The girls already achieved their 7th top 10 hit in front of the physical release of the song. Too bad one of their best, I Hate This Part could only peak at number 12 and is so far their worst performing single in the UK and the only one never reaching the best 10 (apart from Wait A minute which was a download only release and never entered the top 75). U2 is back with a new single and in 2 weeks with a new album. Get On Your Boots is their first single since Window In The Skies reached #4 in 2007. The band was a performer on the Brits but it hasn't helped much the new single, Get On Your Boots. It entered the singles chart this week at number 12 and this is the group's (who had 7 number 1s) first full released single that has missed the top 10 for a very long time!!! Lady Gaga continues her steady climb from week to week with Poker Face, moves up 7 places to #15. The CD single will be released on the 30th March (could be still changed though) and I'm afraid because of the early download appearance in the chart the physical release is too late. Exactly this is that happened to Britney Spears' second single from her new album. Circus is now available in the shops but the fact the song is now on its 11th week in the chart, the hype is over, in fact she already reached her peak at number 13 three weeks ago. Disney star Miley Cyrus climbs from outside the top 40 to number 16 this week on physical release. Fly On The Wall is her third single in the UK but couldn't reach her first single's (See You Again) peak (#11). The second highest new entry is a new comer to the chart at number 22. Taylor Swift it is, although she is not new to the music scene. The American country-pop singer has already a name in his native country since 2006. The New York Times describes her as "one of pop's finest songwriters, country’s foremost pragmatist and more in touch with her inner life than most adults". The 19 year-old singer's single Love Story enters this week on downloads alone, and the physical single comes on the 2nd of March to the shops. Another new entry in the chart comes from Gary Go (birth name Gary Baker, born in Wembley, London). The British Pop/pop-rock singer came to attention last summer when he was touring together with Take That. His first single, Wonderful debuting this week at number 25. Some more new entries in the lower positions came from Rudenko with Everybody on full release (#24), Honey Ryder with Fly Away on downloads alone (#31) and Take That - Up All Night on downloads too (physical release on the 2nd March) (#37). Some oldies make a comeback thanks to the Brits: Coldplay - Viva La Vida (performer on the show) (#27), Elbow - One Day Like This (Best British Group) (#35), and Girls Aloud - The Promise (Best British Single) (#39). -------------- Albums http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/KINGSLEON08.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/2672332.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/4781435.JPG In the albums Kings Of Leon, winner of two awards at the Brits as back to number 1 with Only By The Night, whilst Lily Allen dropped down one to number 2 with It's Not Me It's You. The highest new entry comes from Morrissey. His new album, Years Of Refusal is his ninth studio album and all of them went into top 10 (Kill Uncle - 1991 and Maladjusted - 1997 being the lowest, both peaking at number 8). A warm welcome back to him in the top 3 albums! Duffy gains a lot of sales also thanks to the brits and the three awards she won including Best British Album, so Rockferry is back at number 4! Further down in the albums top 10 Elbow climbs back into the top 10 after their award at the Brits, Lady Gaga - The Fame making a comeback too, Seasick Steve with I Started With Nothin' And Still Got Most Of It Left jumps 15 places to number 9 and The Ting Tings is also a huge jumper thanks to the performance at the Brits. Empire Of The Sun has the second highest new entry in the albums chart with Walking On A Dream. This is the Australian's duo first album that has already reached number 6 in their native country and entering at number 15 in the UK. -------------- Next week http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1799050.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/1797835.JPGhttp://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/HOSPCD001X.JPG Next week watch out for Glasvegas, Madcon, Pussycat Dolls and Shontelle. They all have their physical singles in the shops. David Archuleta, Jennifer Hudson, NKOTB and The Rasmus won't have CD singles to their new songs but still they could make a small impact in the chart. in the albums Prodigy could grab the number 1 spot with their long-awaited new album Invaders Must Die and Erasure could chart high with their greatest Hits collection Total Pop! - 40 Hits. See you next week! Ben Sources: Polyhex, Wikipedia, HMV.co.uk

February 22, 200916 yr :o very nice The Pussycat Dolls are number 10 this week with Whatcha Think About that. The girls already achieved their 7th top 10 hit in front of the physical release of the song. Too bad one of their best, I Hate This Part could only peak at number 12 and is so far their worst performing single in the UK and the only one never reaching the best 10. Wait A Minute missed the top 75. It was released on downoads only just before the new rule enabing all songs to chart whether physically released or not. I reckon airplay peaked at around New Year, so it was eligibe for a significant proportion of it's chart career.
February 22, 200916 yr Fantastic Ben, thanks That's very strange about the Prodigy in Germany... does Omen mean something really bad in German?

February 23, 200916 yr For anyone who does the chart commentary next week, a little chart trivia, if Kelly Clarkson or Taylor Swift do get a #1, it be the 5th female in a row to reach #1 in succession since Leona Lewis, last November. Others are Alexandra Burke, Lady GaGa and Lily Allen, 3 Brits, 2 Americans.
