Posted February 22, 200916 yr A 4th consecutive week at No1 for Lily Allen’s The Fear while the BRIT awards provides some unexpected competition. 01 01 Lily Allen The Fear The Fear extends its run at the top of the UK singles chart to four consecutive weeks, making it the longest running No1 since Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl spent 5 consecutive weeks at the top last August/September. By a quirk of the calendar The Fear is the first single to spend an entire calendar month at No1 since Leona Lewis spent the whole of November 2007 at No1. The last time we had a 2-3-3-4- week sequence of extended No1’s was at the end of 1988 when Whitney Houston One Moment In Time (2), Enya Orinoco Flow (3), Robin Beck First Time (3) and Cliff Richard Mistletoe & Wine (4) successively topped the charts. 02 02 Lady GaGa Feat. Colby O’Donis Just Dance Lady GaGa’s Just Dance is locked at No2 for a fourth successive week and becomes the first former No1 to do so since Nizlopi’s JCB Song spent 4 weeks at No2 after being dethroned by Shayne Ward in December 2005. The only No1’s to have spent longer at No2 this decade are Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me (2001: 1-2-3-2-2-2-2-) and Shakira’s Hip’s Don’t Lie (2006: 3-2-1-2-2-3-1-1-1-1-2-2-) which both spent 5 weeks in the runners up spot. 12 03 Kings Of Leon Use Somebody Having received renewed exposure after winning two awards for Best International Group and Best International Album as well as performing Use Somebody at the 29th annual British Phonographic Industry’s Pop Music Awards (BRIT awards); Kings Of Leon storm back 9 places to No3 with the No2 single Use Somebody and reclaim the No1 album for a fourth week with Only By The Night. Even before this week and the ‘BRITs effect’ Use Somebody’s 22-week chart career thus far has been quite volatile: 29-29-38-48-50-30-25-21-17-15-10-2-7-5-6-5-8-8-10-11-12-3-. An initial top30 debut the result of cherry picking; dropping as far as No50 before promotion and airplay kicked in, which saw it charge to a peak of No2 the week before Christmas. Before being unceremoniously pushed down the chart to make way for a glut of tracks from or promoted on ITV1’s Saturday night schedule (X Factor and Girls Aloud Party). It went on to spend a further 6 weeks within the top10 but in the past two weeks had seemingly been bowing out 10-11-12-. No3 is it’s second highest chart placing to date. While it remains No1 on iTunes, where it has been since their BRITs performance was aired, there remains the distinct possibility that Use Somebody could reach a new peak in 7 days time. 08 04 The Prodigy Omen Following its physical release the Prodigy’s Omen climbs 4 places to duly become their 8th top5 success and their biggest hit since Breathe topped the chart in November 1996. 10 06 Shontelle T-Shirt Continuing to advance before it’s physical release tomorrow the Barbadian singer’s T-Shirt is up four places to record a new peak of No6 having moved: 43-25-13-10-6- to date. 07 08 Beyoncé Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) Beyoncé fails to improve on her No7 peak despite the release of the physical formats of Single Ladies last week. It seems absurdly late to release a physical some 14 weeks after the track first charted, as there has not been a natural focal point for sales to push the track towards a higher peak, which has moved: 8-7-7-8-9-7-8- in the last 7 weeks. The decision to remove the standard album version from iTunes in favour of the deluxe album version didn’t help matters either. As being in the top10 iTunes and therefore on their front page is an invaluable marketing tool. To date the track has failed to reclaim its top10 placing, possibly losing a number of sales as a result. 15 10 The Pussycat Dolls & Missy Elliott Whatcha Think About That A return to top10 form for the American all girl burlesque group The Pussycat Dolls after their last single I Hate This Part broke what was otherwise a perfect top10 record stalling at No12. Whatcha Think About That is their third single from the No4 second studio album Doll Domination. It is also Missy Elliott’s first top10 appearance since Lose Control reached No7 in July 2005. The physical is due out on Monday so could potentially help this climb further in 7 days time. Rounding out the top10: Alesha Dixon slides two places from last weeks No3 peak to No5 with Breathe Slow: 39-23-13-6-5-3-5-. In their 10th week inside the UK top10 James Morrison and Nelly Furtado slip a place with Broken Strings which has thus far moved: 73-51-31-18-6-4-5-2-3-4-5-7-6-7-. As we await the first single from Eminem’s first studio album since 2004 due to be released later this year; the Eminem, Dr. Dre And 50 Cent collaboration Crack A Bottle slides 5 places to No9: 4-4-9-. NEW 12 U2 Get On Your Boots U2 are Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Junior; their beginnings can be traced back to 25th September 1976 in Dublin when Larry Mullen posted a notice on his school notice board for band members. In March 1978 U2 won a talent competition in Limerick. The prize included funding to record a demo tape and within 2 months Paul McGuinness had agreed to become their manager. Their first Irish release came in September 1979 with the EP ‘Three’ and by early 1980 Island records had signed them and they proceeded to record their first studio album Boy that included their first UK single I Will Follow to generally positive reviews. Their first UK top75 hit Fire (No35) came from their second album October in 1981; which contained overtly spiritual references and nearly spelt the end of the band as they struggled to reconcile the rock and roll lifestyle with their faith. In 1983 their third studio album: War, provided them with the first UK No1 album of their career. The first single taken from War: New Years Day became the first of 32 UK top10 hits reaching No10 in January 1983. Later that year they released a live album Under A Red Blood Sky, which reached No2. Next came 1984’s The Unforgettable Fire that was had a funkier looser vibe than War. The lead single Pride (In The Name Of Love) climbed to No3 while the album reached No1. However it wasn’t until the 1987 The Joshua Tree album, which was met with great acclaim and rave reviews, that their careers were launched into the stratosphere. The album was about the bands thoughts about what America and the ‘American Dream’ stands for. It duly became the fastest selling album ever at the time in the UK and topped the US album chart for 9 weeks. The singles With Or Without You (No4), I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (No6) and Where The Streets Have No Name (No4) are still considered all-time classics by many today. U2’s sixth studio album Rattle and Hum was met with a more mixed reception with many critics dismissing it as ‘pretentious’. The album reached No1 and the first single Desire reached No1 in October 1988. In 1991 spurred on by the negative criticism towards Rattle and Hum U2 decided to adopt a more experimental style, which would set the tone of much of their 1990’s work. Achtung Baby borrowed elements from dance, house and electronic music combined with more edgy personal lyrics. The first single from Achtung Baby The Fly famously ended Bryan Adams record-breaking 16 week run at No1 in November 1991 although the album itself stalled at No2. Perhaps the most recognisable hit from the album is One, which reached No7 in March 1992. In 1993 U2 released the No1 album Zooropa strangely the first single ‘Numb’ was only released as a video single. The cover of the album featured the name of their 1995 Batman theme Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me which became their longest running UK Top10 hit unusually for U2 spending 8 weeks in the top10 2-2-3-6-10-6-4-7-. After a four-year studio album break encompassing the Passengers project U2 returned with the album Pop that again featured rhythms borrowed from dance. Both the album and lead single Discotheque entered at No1 in spring 1997. In 1998 they released The Best Of 1980 – 1990 & B Sides, which reached No1 in November. The single The Sweetest Thing began a run of 13 consecutive top5 hits, which lasted until Windows In The Skies in January 2007 (No4). While in 2002 they released The Best Of 1990 – 2000 collection, which reached No2 while the Single the William Orbit produced Electrical Strom, entered at No5. The 00’s albums All That You Can’t Leave Behind (No1) and How To Dismantle A Atomic Bomb (No1) heralded a return to a more stripped down sound and yielded three No1’s between them Beautiful Day (Oct 00), Vertigo (Nov 04) and Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own (Feb 05). Another hits collection followed in 2006 U218 Singles (No4) and collaborations with Mary J Blige (One No2) and Green Day (The Saints Are Coming No2). The 00’s also saw two dance acts sample and credit U2 with varying degrees of success. LMC vs U2 Take Me To The Clouds Above reached No1 in February 2004 while Musique vs U2 New Years Dub reached No15 in June 2001. Now on Mercury records U2 are once again beginning to experiment with their sound. Get On Your Boots is the first single from their forthcoming album No Line On The Horizon that is due to be released on 2nd March 2009. Get On Your Boots by entering at No12 is U2’s lowest charting chart eligible lead single from a studio album since Fire From October only made No35 in August 1981. It also their lowest charting single since If God Would Send His Angels which also stalled at No12 the week before Christmas 1997 and was the 5th single taken from Pop. While a relative failure by their own standards it must be pointed out that not many 30 year veteran bands can even still boast an original line up let alone the ability to still rack up top20 hits. 19 14 Kings Of Leon Sex On Fire Following their haul of two BRITs awards, the BRIT’s effect see Kings Of Leon former No1 single Sex On Fire climb back up another 5 places to no14 in it’s 24th consecutive week within the top30. Having moved 1-1-1-2-2-4-4-5-11-13-13-17-14-15-21-12-11-12-14-19-18-23-19-14- thus far. 22 15 Lady GaGa Poker Face Now picking up airplay and heavy rotation on music channels Lady GaGa’s second single from The Fame climbs 7 places into the top15 for the first time in its chart career: 30-26-28-24-22-15-. A firm nightclub favourite and now top10 on iTunes this could well make its top10 debut in seven days time. 44 16 Miley Cyrus Fly On The Wall Sixteen-year-old American Disney teen star Destiny Hope Cyrus better know as Miley Cyrus returns with the third single from her debut No10 album Breakout. Miley came to prominence for her role as Hannah Montana on the Disney television series. Fly On The Wall climbs an impressive twenty-eight places after being physically released to return her to top20 hit making from after 7 Things only peaked at No25. Her debut See You Again remains her biggest hit to date peaking at No11 last September. 30 17 T.I. Feat. Justin Timberlake Dead And Gone The physical release has been delayed until the 9th March however Dead And Gone continues to pick up momentum and has moved 58-47-30-17- so far. It looks highly likely to give T.I. his second top10 hit from his latest album Paper Trail next week. 17 18 Britney Spears Circus Like Beyoncé; Britney’s second single Circus from the album of the same name slides a place following its physical release. It now looks unlikely to improve upon its No13 peak and is set to become only her fourth single to miss the top10 and ranks as her joint second smallest hit ever along with I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll which also peaked at No13 in November 2002. Only Break The Ice faired worse peaking at No15 last April. Circus’ chart run to date reads: 32-39-60-48-43-24-17-17-13-15-17-18- 24 19 The Killers Human Reversing last weeks fall in its 15th week on the chart The Killers Human benefits from their appearance on stage alongside Lady GaGa with Outstanding Contribution To Music winners The Petshop Boys. They were nominated for Best International Group and Best International Album with Day & Age however lost out on both awards to Kings Of Leon. Human has moved: 4-3-4-5-7-11-10-8-11-13-16-15-19-24-19- peaking at No3 last November. NEW 22 Taylor Swift Love Story Pennsylvannia born American country-pop singer-songwriter Taylor Alison Swift has had a string of US hit singles since 2006 when Tim McGraw reached No40 on the Hot100. However Love Story, a pleasant country-pop love song is her first UK top75 hit and makes a sizeable splash having been only available for most of the week on iTunes as a stripped down version. Expect this to glide effortlessly into the top5 at the very least in seven days time. NEW 24 Rudenko Everybody 23-year-old Moscow born Leonid Rudenko is a trance/house producer. Everybody is his debut UK top40 hit. The biggest Russian dance success came in the fall of 2001 when PPK’s Resurrection reached No3 two years later in January 2003 TATU became the only Russian’s to top the charts with All The Things She Said which spent 4 weeks at No1. NEW 25 Gary Go Wonderful London born pop/pop-rock singer songwriter Gary Baker was signed to record label Decca in 2007 after one of his demo tapes was picked up by a music producer in New Jersey. He has spent the last year promoting his material having supported The Script and The Feeling on tour. He is due to support Take That on their arena/stadium tour this summer. Wonderful is his debut single and enters at a highly credible No25. 45 27 Coldplay Viva La Vida It was a night of frustration for Coldplay at this year’s BRIT awards as their four nominations surprisingly failed to yield any awards. However they did perform Viva La Vida, which has helped bring the track back to the publics attention and as a result returns to the top40 for the first time in seven weeks. The chart-run in full: 1-2-7-11-14-16-18-14-10-11-13-13-17-25-27-32-29-39-41-46-53-51-41-42-55-68-68-44-33-44-55-55-53-58-45-27- is rather impressive. NEW 31 Honey Ryder Fly Away A second UK top40 hit for the rock / folk rock / indie band who previously reached No32 in August 2008 with Numb. Fly Away has been helped by the availability of numerous mixes. Numb bombed straight out of the top200 after one week, it remains to be seen if this will fair any better next week. 70 35 Elbow One Day Like This Following their win in the Best British Group category Elbow’s One Day Like This hit’s the peak No35 it set in September last year having initially made No39 in June 2008. Their album The Seldom Seen Kid returns to the album top5 in the wake of their BRIT success. 59 37 Take That Up All Night Manchester man band formerly boy band rack up their 21st UK Top40 single since 1991. A performance at the Brit Awards albeit of Greatest Day has heralded the beginning of the promotional push for Up All Night, which is due out physically on the 2nd March. 58 39 Girls Aloud The Promise Fresh from edging out Coldplay’s Viva La Vida in the public vote for Best British Single with The Promise which they also performed at the BRIT awards Girls Aloud’s award winning track returns to the top 40 after a 4-week absence. Albums For the first time since 24th November 2007 there are seven different albums inside the top10. As mentioned earlier the Kings Of Leon’s Only By The Night returns to the top for a second time this year and the fourth time in its chart career in the wake of their success at the BRIT awards. Last weeks No1 album Lily Allen’s first chart topper It’s Not Me It’s You slips a place to No2 in its second week. Morrissey’s 18th UK top40 album becomes his 5th top3 success his first top3 album since Ringleader Of The Tormentors topped the chart in April 2006. The BRIT’s effect where acts who have performed or have won awards see massive increases in sales after the ceremony has been aired on television as had a massive impact on this weeks top10 albums. Duffy’s Rockferry the biggest selling album of 2008 returns to the top5 moving 19-4-, as she became the first female artist ever to win three awards in one year (British Female Solo, British Breakthrough and MasterCard British album), in fact only Blur in 1995 won more BRIT awards at one ceremony. Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid returns to match its March 2008 No5 peak following their British Group win (23-5-). The Killers Day & Age moves back up 3 places to No6, while Lady GaGa’s No3 The Fame moves back up to No7 from last weeks No13 after a weeks absence from the top10 caused by Valentines themed albums flooding the top10. The Ting Tings former No1 album We Started Nothing leaps 25 places to No8 having performed That’s Not My Name with Estelle at the BRITs. American blues artist Seasick Steve climbs 24-9- with I Started With Nothin’ And I Still Got Most Of It Left following his nomination for Best International Male. Finally The Fleet Foxes self-titled debut moves 11-10 after slipping last week from its peak of No3. Next Week On the singles front Lily Allen will be aiming for a 5th consecutive week at the top with the Fear. However she faces fierce competition from a reinvigorated Kings Of Leon Use Somebody plus strong download only tracks from Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson. Physical singles are due out today/tomorrow from: Shontelle, The Pussycat Dolls, The Ting Tings, Chase And Status and Madcon. On the albums The Prodigy will be aiming for their 5th consecutive No1 album while Kings Of Leon Only By The Night and Lily Allen’s It’s Not Me It’s You should remain in contention. Could The Lonely Island’s comedy album make an impact? Edited February 22, 200916 yr by Ethan.
February 22, 200916 yr Not bad We can't have 2 commentaries though at the home page... maybe to be added below Ben's commentary. You wrote The Fame as The Fear  Edited February 22, 200916 yr by funmaker11
February 22, 200916 yr Someone has a lot of time on their hands. I hope that wasn't intended as a dig. The commentary writers put a lot of effort into these purely for Buzzjack and its users, comments like that quite frankly are not welcome.

I agree. I do a commentary on another site. It takes a couple hours or so before the Sunday chart show plus some rewriting as the chart is revealed.
February 23, 200916 yr Fantastic commentary and the obscure facts are very interesting to read! Please keep it up. I get the impression from replies on this thread that people are favouring Ben's commentary which is unfair. This is great work and I look forward to reading it every week!

I'm sorry but that's not true at all! EJ decided to do his own comentary, I can't see anything wrong with that. To say such a stupid remark IS not fair! Watch out next time what you're saying/writing! No one favours one commentary to do other one! Don't cause arguments or fights in here!

I will echo what Ben said - anyone is welcome to do a chart commentary here, and both Ben and Ethan have worked hard to do so this week. Please do not start rivalry where there is none <_>
