The UK Top 40 singles of the 1980s: listening sessions + polls: next session 14 December
I've decided it's best to postpone the next listening session as we're a bit too busy to complete the prep by this Sunday. I'm out the following Sunday, so we'll reconvene on Sunday 14 December at 16:00 to launch into 1982!2 points

Jade ranks the 2006 #1s
2 pointsI'd forgotten Don't Stop Me Now had hit the top spot as a cover, and I dont recall the other side at all, but I still listed that as the first track (ie the better one) when it peaked at a lofty number 70 in my charts, so yeah, not that good. I dont even need to hear the Queen original ever again it's just always-present in the 21st century, so McFly is a no-brainer to be near the bottom. Leona's ballad is an uninspired choice, but a guaranteed banker, though, and the best thing about it is Leona, who has a genuinely good singing voice. I just wish she had been given some consistently great songs over her career, apart from a handful of very good ones, and it's quite odd how her career evaporated never to come back down the line.2 points

It's a classic for me, it was the song that was everywhere as I started secondary school and it reminds me of a more innocent time in my life. Of course, at the age of 11 I had no idea just how filthy the lyrics were! 🫣1 point

Oh I do love C'est La Vie, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I never owned it on single though, I’d have to wait until l got the album in early 1999 to listen to properly. Saying that though my sister did tape it off the radio along with the other pop music of the time, so I did get to listen to it on car journeys.1 point

All That I Need, a bit of a "I wouldnt be able to hum that one!" vibe to me, and it rings no bells as I re-listen to it. Of course, if I was in Florida I will have missed it's chart run entirely, so no wonder - a quick check confirms that is not the case - it had a 6-week run and peaked at 36, so I lasted longer on it than the record-buying public, oops! It's OK, quite pleasant, but lower down for me. Condolences on the Maypole dancing. If it helps, one of my Uni tutors who was very into olde english literature and customs thought it would be a whizz wheeze to get us 20-ish students out of the classroom and prancing around the grass area at the back in full view of other students in a sort of Maypole worship. Very much not a drama student, I think it would be fair to say I gave it zero effort and failed to see what it had to do with reading Effing Milton, Anglo-saxon epics or The Iliad, but I very much recall feeling like a complete twat whatever my response to it! 😄 While I enjoyed Celtic-tinged music at the time, let's just say I loved Bewitched, but was bemused by B*witched, had I been 9 or 10 I'm sure I would have loved C'Est La Vie in the same way I loved Cinderella Rockefella when I was that age, or I'm A Tiger (lulu). Sadly, I was 40 but it still peaked at 30 in my charts. So that's something of a victory really! Hey ho! 😄1 point

B*Witched - C'est La Vie Rank: 9/10 Reason: The first time I ever heard of Irish girlband B*Witched was in about May 1998 - iroinically a few days after we had done a maypole dance with school around the village green (don't ask) to all sorts of folk jigs. 'Have you ever heard of B*Witched?', a classmate said. 'The 1960s US sitcom about witchcraft? Yes, why's that?' I replied, to much laughter (I was still pretty out of touch with pop music at this point, yet a big fan of Samantha, Agnes and co from the 60s). I was swiftly informed all about the new pop group and their debut single C'est La Vie, which would hit No.1 later in the month and become a huge hit, spending its first seven weeks in the top four. Female pop had been riding the crest of a wave since Spice Girls and Gina G brought it crashing back to No.1 in 1996, and of course the girlband market was starting to become saturated in the wake of the former. But while the likes of Vanilla, Solid Harmonie, N-Tyce and countless others failed, B*Witched had something different about them - a recognisable fashion style in double denim, a marketing angle in identical twin sisters Edele and Keavy (and the extra helping hand that they were also sisters to Boyzone's Shane Lynch) alongside Sinead and Lindsay, a penchant for an Irish jig in the middle eight of each song, and the fact that their first two singles were unashamed pop amped to the max - not trying to appeal mainly to teens like the other bands mentioned, but hoping to get younger kids on board too with their videos full of colour that popped off the screen. C'est La Vie was arguably the cheesiest track to reach No.1 that wasn't a novelty single or otherwise related to a TV show since the Stock Aitken Waterman era. But the song was packed with hooks, charming, infectious, and relateable to kids because the production, especially the outro and that guitar effect at the end, were similar to the kinds of sounds that were used as soundbeds to kids TV shows or for continuity on things like CBBC. It was very instant. Plus the Irish were having a great 1998 already anyway thanks to Boyzone and The Corrs most notably, plus Ireland had just come off the back of winning Eurovision four times in the 90s, Riverdance was still huge after it had become popular during the interval of Eurovision 1994, and Irish music was generally very in vogue. Add to the mix lyrics aimed at kids but with plenty of obvious double entendres aimed at adults (read those verse lyrics again...), and C'est La Vie could hardly miss.1 point

Hiya! That's a huge fall for Mature which is a shame. I do maintain the lyrics are anything but the namesake which is a shame. I do hope dopamine can have a long run here. It might not be peak Robyn but it's not far off at all. Speaking of sticking around, I'm glad to see the fate of Ophelia doing well still. In very much enjoying it too! Bandaids is still working its way in my brain. Great track! Fab chart 🥳1 point

Tyla's "Chanel" enters at #171 on spotify! Hope it keeps climbing - it's getting some playlist support now too (added to today's top hits). If it climbs enough we may see it top 100 in the singles chart on Friday (taking into account 3 track rule/ACR)? Also enters the Apple Music chart at #194! That looks promising. Hope it can become a top 40 hit, perhaps in the new year once the Christmas songs are gone?1 point

XMAS Single and Christmas Fully Wrapped Chart Predictions
Ya im not not hugely excited for the album but im looking forward to it at the same time and seeing how it does, if it was a regular studio album i would be totally pumped up for it. Id think a number 1 single would grab more attention than a number 1 album aswell at this point and it would feel very special as we know its hugely likely future number 1 albums are coming but id still be very happy if unwrapped grabs her another number 1 album as it helps move her up the list of artists who have had the most number 1 albums in their career.1 point

Jade ranks the 2006 #1s
1 pointNo complaints about the bottom two. So many Westlife songs following the first couple of albums merge together and are so painstakingly dull that I can’t even finish them nor recall what I did hear immediately after listening. ‘The Rose’ is marginally more distinctive but that’s not saying much at all. McFly’s cover of ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ is inoffensive which kinda makes it offensive given the star power and charisma Freddie Mercury brings to the original. That said I do have to admit it probably wouldn’t be in my Top 10 Queen songs! I do really like Leona’s version of ‘A Moment Like This’ - much like Alexandra Burke’s ‘Hallelujah’, I think she brings it 100% vocally which elevates it beyond the typical winners single formula.1 point

1993 Top 75's of the year
1 pointI really like that Dobbie Brothers dance remix. Mr Big have yet another Cat Stevens cover, there's a lot! Feels Like Heaven is good, reminds me a bit of an updated 90s version of Yazoo - Other Side of Love for some reason lol! I think its the 'da da da' vocal improvision bit in it and the synths. 'All For Love' is a bit cheesy soft rock but I like it! 'I Drove All Night' by Roy Orbison is my favourite version of the song, his voice is great in it, made poignant as he died before it was released.1 point
