13 pointsThis week we celebrate BJSC's 18th birthday! The contest was established on 23rd November 2007, making Sunday just gone the big day! Happy birthday BJSC and thank you for all the amazing memories, great musical discoveries, and the friendships it has helped to form. Come and join in the festivities if you haven't already confirmed!13 points- Best BJSC lore drops
13 pointsDid someone not get their mum to refresh the forum for the confirmations thread and submit because they were unavailable and really wanted an entry and I think they knew someone else wanted it 😭13 points- RESULTS: BJSC 179 • The Final
12 pointsHere's one I made earlier as I knew a 3 hour 30 minute show would batter my brain: First and foremost, a huge congratulations to @gooddelta! I think it's been 11 years since you last won BJSC, so before my time competing. I must be your lucky charm at the moment as you won my edition of the Pop Forum Song Contest this year too The return of FSR Rontvia at the top is a story to root for in itself, but I really liked 'Luukered' as a song too, gave it 10 points. You of course mentioned that you were one of the people who originally tried 'Fleeting' this time, so hooray that your back-up still went on to smash instead! I had no expectations for my own entry this time, no shocks that it's my worst performing of the year so far, but thought I might as well take more of a risk with the safety net of an AQ. I’ve been so absorbed in the process on the whole that my own result didn’t really matter. Thank you to everyone who pointed it though - especially Chez, Jacob and Mattias for the medals, glad you enjoyed ‘Blu’ so much <3 As for my own medals... I'm pleased Sovarasma climbed into a respectable top 20 position in the end and Cumulonimbia finished top 10, was particularly exciting when the latter was in the top 2 at one point. Justice for Pestolia but at least I got to finish next to them *.* I voted for 6 of that top tier this time - with the aforementioned Rontvia and Cumulonimbia, plus POPHub, Elëdan, Kathaldazia and Danæviia, so plenty to be pleased about up there. I was a bit sad when Persephonia departed the top 10 after spending a while in there, but top 15 is nothing to be sniffed at of course. I was nervous about hosting this time, as it had been a good 4 years and I can be a bit of a stresshead perfectionist, but I think this contest has finally made me feel more secure in my hosting abilities. I wanted to be an organised, hands on host but tried to take it a bit slower behind the scenes this time and thankfully had a lot of fun with it in the process. Thank you to everyone who entered! I loved observing the discussions (and joining in where appropriate) while watching the results unfold. It will of course feel like a relief to have completed the work that goes into hosting but overall it was a positive, unforgettable experience for me. Bring on the final contest of the year ❤️12 points- BJSC 180: Confirmations

11 pointsmine is very Jadakissnia meets Persephonia and Hushkanukia with a sprinkling of Rontvia and a giant smattering of Kathaldazia mixed with Elëdan, Aeroche and N DNTN and of course a whole lot of Kluminican Republic and Neliönoir and sounds like the whopper of a banger you might hear from the lovechild of Hendinia and Bøtanikkä if Cheiron put an East Rukahavian entry in a blender with Sovarasma and Herbilore11 points- Best BJSC lore drops

10 pointsYassssssss! I'm shocked! I know it had lots of contender hype but it's so against the grain of the winners we usually get (both in terms of genre and repeat artists) that I didn't really expect more than 6th-10th! Thank you so much everyone who voted for it, that's a great margin too as I expected this contest to be so close but a few songs did break away from the pack. I was one of many to try and confirm Fleeting, and had it got through it may have won, but it's a lot more satisfying to win with something that nobody (apart from I believe @uhsting and @matto ) already knew. Also the first Estonian language entry becomes the first winner for the language, which is crazy! I have sent some incredibly niche stuff over the years, trying to explore new genres and languages, for my own amusement as much as anything else, and you just never know what is going to hit and miss, so it's very satisfying that one of them finally went all the way! ❤️ Two months after Korku came quite close. Thanks so much @Jade for amazing hosting and presiding over this memorable month. Will comment on the other results shortly but yes, I will do my best to host it, even though December is manic, so it might be a bit less of a spectacle than if I'd won in the summer, but will see what I can do! If mods could let me know what I need to do r.e. Google Forms for confirmations and dates, that would be great because it's just been so long...but I will start it soon so it doesn't too close to Christmas, so get your final entries ready. And it's BJSC 180, so as Matto said somewhere else, do something different if you want, do a complete 180!10 points- Best BJSC lore drops
10 pointsTo add some very early lore from the first 10 contests: Boyan introudced BJSC to the forum back in late 2007 - we collectively didn't really understand it for the first year so you'll see plenty of UK No.1s and classics among the first year of entries before people universally realised (for the most part anyway) that it was a great tool to discover new music rather than sharing existing hits. Many people self penalised anyway so none of the big past UK hits ever won. Damon/Frahliso sent a 15-year-old artist called Charli XCX as early as 2008 though, so he got the inspired memo early on. In true BJSC fashion, it was a DNQ. Some early winners and 2nd placers became hits several months after they were sent (Love Song, I Kissed A Girl, Just Dance). BJSC had another long break between the 5th and 6th contests, the 5th being the first one I hosted (starting to wonder if the semi to get rid of three songs had an effect here, although I was proud to host the contest's first ever semi final 🤣). However I somewhat redeemed myself by helping it back from the brink when I suggested pulling the 6th contest forward (iirc a date hadn't been set for it yet after some months) after hearing the song Smack Me by Untouched on a free CD I got with Music Week and being desperate to send it and not wanting to wait for ages. The track finished 5th. We used to go all in with the fantasy with our countries and the national threads. We had things like a gossip/chat show called 'Loose Lingerie' (it was based on Loose Women...the 00s were really something else) hosted by Maria Haukaas Storeng and Mira Craig, where countries could book a slot to promote their entries and lots of fun, hype and gossip would ensue. It looks like I'd been let loose on Photoshop for the first time for the banner. Talking of Mira Craig, I sent her in quick succession for a second time in BJSC X, which was effectively the contest that ended that formative era. A lot of the nations who had been there from the start saw their first DNQ, including myself and @Silas - who sent a fan favourite Sugababes album track. Meanwhile, my entry Headhunted I was so sure would win that I installed it at the top of my OWN odds - I think I deludedly said it could be a No.1 single for Pussycat Dolls. All this self hype caused a lot of discussion about it on the forum (roughly 50/50 for and against the song, at least 20 posters commented on it one way or the other and I put some of the very funny opinions in my signature for a while - I particularly enjoyed Martin's 'I don't know what the other members are smoking') only for it to come crashing down spectacularly with a DNQ, although I really needed the dose of reality looking back, although I still love the track. The eventual results in the final also showed an early changing of the tides, with new countries, genres and sounds doing well and coming through. The second year on had a very different feel to it than the first, with the introductions of early attempts to veto stuff, although several of us had called for procedures earlier than that, especially when we nearly had one of the contest's all-time great early winners, Will You Remember Me Tomorrow by Margaret Berger, being beaten by P!nk's So What, which had started to get airplay and was quite clearly heading for the top in the UK in the coming weeks when somebody cheekily sent it. I've realised through this that having an online footprint from nearly 20 years ago available really makes you appreciate how much you grow up over time.10 points- Best BJSC lore drops

9 points9 points- FSR Rontvia National Thread 3.0 / The Greatest Hits of FSR Rontvia released
Street parties to mark SADU's win and official Best Of compilation released After a wait of 11 and a half years, FSR Rontvia has returned to the top of the scoreboard with Estonian folk/pop act SADU's Luukered. The group arrived to a hero's welcome in the capital of Constarvan after performing free concerts in Greenfroze, Skall and Republique d'Askorza, to thank their audiences for the generous gold medals awarded on Sunday. Ricardo Delta of the RTVN said: "We won eight of our first 64 contests - one in every eight entered - and then waited 115 contests for our ninth victory, but it's an amazing feeling to clamber to the top again after six second place entries in the interim and we're proud to have been successfully represented by the first ever Estonian lanuage entry in BJSC. The song has climbed to No.1 in FSR Rontvia this week, ahead of Black Box Recorder's These Are The Things, which sits at No.2 after winning Bop Idol, a popular music contest in another galaxy. We are ecstatic to have the chance to host the landmark 180th contest and will kick off proceedings properly tomorrow." In the meantime, an official compilation has been released locally and internationally to highlight 100 of FSR Rontvia's greatest hits. Picking the biggest, most memorable, and favourite moments from the 179 songs we have sent was not an easy task, but the four disc compilation is available on deluxe CD and vinyl, while it is also available to stream on Spotify. All of our 29 top three hits are present and correct, including the nine winners and 11 silver medallists. Disc 1 (pop bloc FSR) kicks off with our double winner Sheelah and our first ever winner, Love Song by Sara Bareilles, before moving on to second place smashes from Delta Goodrem, Jessica Winter, Holy Molly and Anna Abreu, before lots of our other favourite pop and schlager entries follow. Disc 2 (world music/spoken word/rock bloc FSR) opens with current winner SADU and stirring top five pieces from Ortiga, Dzivia and Billx & Otyken before taking in some of our other foreign language hits (and favourite misses) and then moving on to two songs that would later become mega global hits, by Hozier and Walk The Moon, a section of our favourite spoken word entries, and our rock and metal highlights before finishing with the 13 minute Dutch orchestral/ballad/rock epic by Sophie Straat that topped the end of year charts in FSR Rontvia last year. Disc 3 (dance/electronic bloc FSR) starts with our biggest dance entry, the winner RAMelia by trance legend RAM, followed by top five smashes from Prance Faris, Rivaz, Kosmonova and Michael Woods before moving on to the harder electronic sounds of Cassie Raptor, Hudson Mohawke, iushi vu and DJ Sabrina, South African house from DJ Kent & The Arrows, GoldFish and The Kiffness and then various other curios, favourites, Example's first hit (also sent several months before release) and other trance selections. Finally, Disc 4 mops up entries from when we temporarily dabbled in various other blocs, like the shimmering electro or Scandipop of winners Beautiful Small Machines, Chart Music and Lykke Li, the beautiful M.A.G.I.C. from The Sound of Arrows, and another early winner from US duo Uh Huh Her. Other big hits are covered on this disc from the likes of Midnight Kids, Pixie Lott (again, sent a year before it hit the UK charts), and of course Sheelah's first winner Psycho. The album rounds off with some of our mellower entries and ballads including the future star Freya Ridings (whose Lost Without You we sent in this live version included) and of course, rounding off with the eternal hope of our first ever entry, taking you back to the start with Delta Goodrem's Believe Again. Several top ten hits have been excluded to make way for mid-table favourites, niche gems, and domestic smash hit DNQs from the likes of DJ Kent & The Arrows, Pomplamoose & dodie, Dolcenera, Mira Craig, Sheppard and Daithí, all of which are some of our absolute favourite entries we have sent despite their failures in the contest. A few of the versions on Spotify are not the versions we sent (Example, GoldFish, DJ Kent & The Arrows, Pixie Lott, The Sound of Arrows and Michael Woods, while Chart Music - essentially an early demo version for Sally Shapiro - has been replaced by their version), while a few others are not available in any form. The full tracklist and playlist is below, and we thank each and every one of you who has ever even given us a single point in any contest for listening, and for supporting FSR Rontvia for 19 years. 7 pointsre the variants I think the majority of the variants debate comes from someone like Taylor releasing extra versions at convenient moments, which we know she did a lot with THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. It's all fair game, but I get why it attracts criticism because she's prone to doing it over multiple weeks, which not many others do (beyond, say, a late release Blood Records exclusive vinyl, or a full re-issue like Tate McRae's doing this week). It's not wrong or unfair and anyone can do it, but I totally get why it looked shady in the past. On a wider scale, we all know variants are largely keeping the physical album market afloat, and Taylor is just one of many who utilise it to its full potential - again, it's all fair game, and I don't think any one person can be criticised more than another for this, because everyone is able to play the game should they want to. As for RAYE, a couple of vinyl variants is nothing major, and it's fair for her to release them, and I don't think she should be criticised for it. I don't really know why this comparison's started up as the Taylor variant debate hasn't felt quite so prominent recently, The Life of a Showgirl's variants were largely (but not entirely, I know) contained to week 1 and it hasn't felt like she's employed tactics that could be seen as shady to block other artists from #1 at the last second. This certainly doesn't apply to RAYE so probably a good idea to let this discussion drop x7 points- Streaming Services Chart Discussion; W/C 14/11/25

6 pointsit's my turn to contribute to this series now and what a year I've got. 2006 particularly stands out for being out with the old, in with the new. This year saw the end of two long-running British music staples. In February, the final regular issue of Smash Hits magazine was published, after nearly 30 years on the shelves. This blow was followed by another one that July, this time on the television, as it was also time to wave goodbye to regular episodes of Top of the Pops, an even lengthier phenomenon of over 40 years. Consumption habits were clearly changing. Apple had found their place in the legal music download market in a time when shady file sharing was posing a threat to the music industry. Their iPods were all the rage and iTunes was the dominant platform to purchase music files on. The transition from physical CDs to downloads was really making its mark on the singles chart in 2006. For instance, 'Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley became the first song to top the chart on downloads alone. That is one of 24 #1 hits that I will be ranking in this thread. On a personal level, I spent most of 2006 as an 8-year-old in year 4 at school. I turned 9 that August and started year 5 the following month, the penultimate year of primary school. So I was very young, but already into the Now! That's What I Call Music series and absorbing pop culture around me; I'm sure this year will bring back many memories. I've just opened up my certificates folder to get into the headspace of my 2006 self and apparently that year I was achieving certificates/badges/belts in gymnastics, karate and swimming, while also "working hard at practicing her recorder" - simpler times x Back to the music... obviously every year comes with both the good and the bad, there's some dross to weed out here for sure, but on the whole I think I have a pretty strong top 10. Something was in the water that year. I look forward to stepping back in time with you all soon and sharing my thoughts on these chart-toppers. Feel free to let me know what you think too. 💖6 points- BJSC 180: Confirmations

i weirdly remember this so clearly lol. when trying to think of a country name, i was sitting at the kitchen table of my student flat in a housing estate called denton in london. figured using my actual current location would make the most sense, but obviously had to give it a cool alt twist (as per my clique status at the time). so ‘in denton’ was capitalised, lost its vowels and a legend was born 👀 in answer to the topic, i guess if it wasn’t called that, it would now be N LKNL based on my address (dont doxx me pls) #lore6 points- Trump: Folie à Deux (US Politics Thread)
