If you look over the last 10 years only Ed Sheeran, Abba, Adele and Taylor Swift have been capable of selling in the quantity needed to make the list. Abba was pretty much a one off as their first studio album in 40 years and Ed Sheeran is no longer capable of hitting the mark leaving only Adele and Taylor as possibles. A lot of acts are releasing in multiple variants but yet they aren't making this list so it is still an achievement I think, after all no one is making people buy all the variants, she simply has the fans to do it, in that respect all the acts on the list simply had the fans to do it. I do understand your point but ultimately she's still the only one making this list these days.

I'm pretty sure Taylor's sales even without extra variants would be well over 300,000 this week anyway so it's neither here nor there. I personally think the way the same Greatest Hits and pseudo-Greatest Hits titles endlessly clog up the album chart is a bigger problem than a few extra sales from variants in one week.

Spotify YTD at the end of Q3: "Ordinary" continues to stretch its lead with the only question now being how high it will rank compared to the other highest year end totals. "Messy" should finally surpass "That's So True" in the next couple of weeks, many months after it surpassed it on the OCC list. "back to friends" is the higher of the two sombr songs on this list at #12, with both doing much better than the OCC list. The two old Coldplay favourites and "Nice to Each Other" are also performing a lot better on Spotify. On the other hand, "Golden" is slightly lagging behind its OCC position at only #36. Other hits underperforming on Spotify are "Dior" (#62) and "Blessings" (#87). As with the OCC list, "Iris" should dethrone "Mr. Brightside" as top oldie here, however, it may take a couple more weeks. "Dreams" is also on for a record year, as well as "Naive" sneaking into the top 50 for the first time. The White Noise track, now combining totals from both the Loopable and the Loopable No Fade versions would be #19 if I placed it properly (or #27 counting only the Loopable version's streams). Top 3 highest non-OCC list songs are "Feel Good Inc." (#58), "Teenage Dirtbag (#68) and "505" (#69). The only 2025 hit not on the OCC YTD currently in the top 100 are "Just Keep Watching" (#95) and "Juno" (#97), although the latter will drop out next week. "Burning Down" and "Tell Me" both fail to make the top 200 here despite being in the top 100 on the OCC list. Any questions, as always, please ask.

Comparing the two eras is always difficult - but Taylor definitely deserves to be making this list. I don't think anyone else could achieve it in the current climate and that is really impressive regardless of the number of formats etc. She has some hardcore fans but she also has a huge amount of more casual fans who are also clearly listening and buying it. She is by far the biggest act on the planet at the moment and she's at the peak of popularity, she's comparable to how big acts like Oasis were in the 90s and Adele was at her peak so she deserves to be listed among them in terms of high sellers. For every argument that she has multiple format purchases, she has to also combat people who will love the album but only stream it - which will generate way less sales now that the casual supermarket purchases that would have boosted a lot of the others on this list. If anything she'll be unfairly underrepresented on most lists because her most recent albums are hugely popular but won't be mentioned among the all time biggest sellers - and I'd probably listen to an argument that if she'd been releasing in the physical era that she'd potentially be higher up this list than she currently is.

I think after observing a decade of their posts, it's safe to say missed the point and with no hope of ever finding it.

It’s a small artist with loads of variants that uses that tool to chart in the top 5 for the very first time and instantly enhances their profile because of it helping them become a bigger name with more support. Surely that isn’t always a bad thing?

A million percent this. The vast majority of people don't have pockets deep enough to variant collect, for a start. And then when you take into account that most people that variant collect would probably only be doing it for their one absolute favourite artist (like me), that number will be even lower. Ultimately, having multiple variants gives choice. Taylor will probably have more variant collectors than most, but that's mostly by virtue of having more fans than most. It really is as simple as that! Instead of an album selling 25k (perhaps 2k duplicates of the same format), we're seeing an album sell 400k (with perhaps 32k duplicates)

So you know for a fact every single fan is purchasing all the variants? Because that’s not the case at all. You’re also cutting a huge market of vinyl collectors out who collect vinyls? I know I’d be bored if all artists had was one vinyl variant?! Multiple gives people choice. I still don’t see your point it’s hardly fake sales when someone is going out and buying however many versions? Other artists do exactly the same it’s just Taylor has a bigger fanbase…So it’s all relative to the market no? The only difference would be even less physical sales meaning streaming would be an even more dominant factor?! So smaller artists who use multiple variants probably wouldn’t even be able to compete with streaming the same with legacy acts who rely on physicals? How would that be fair?

As someone who worked in HMV when '25' came out, I can confirm that people did in fact buy more than 1 copy... (and people have done for years and years and years before that!) Buying more than one copy of an album isn't a new concept. Ofc it's still an impressive feat and I'm clearly not saying everybody bought more than one copy - just saying that there were more than a few people who did buy more than one copy of that album, whether they bought multiple for themselves I obviously don't know (I know people irl who bought duplicate copies of albums for various reasons like 1 for their car and 1 for their home etc..) But anyway, it's insane that we are seeing these levels again. I was starting to doubt we ever would (variants or not) tbh. Physical media (for the most part) is just at a real low right now and the only way artists get to boost their numbers is by releasing different variants (hence why different albums get random chart boosts sometimes when a new variant drops), but even then I didn't think we'd see 400k (or thereabouts) first week again.

2019, 2021, 2023, 2025. And still mentioning about fake sales funnily in 21,23, 25 when Taylor Swift has an album out. The charts won't change.
