Posted January 2, 20223 yr Yes it's back, the title says it all, a thread designed to "best guess" the sales week by week for 1992. We'll count down all the sounds of the year and hopefully generate a few "almost forgotten gems" along the way. As always thanks go to MFR, Vas tariner, Youtube, Wikipedia, MW, popscene, James Masterton, Discogs, and a few other sources who have helped over the years. Here's the links to to the 90s threads if this isn't your year! 1991 1990 In doing this I've tried to take into account TOTP performances and other factors which may have effected sales and chart positions throughout the decade. The Internet can't tell me everything so I'm relying on the Buzzjack oldies to throw in some pertinent facts that I may be unaware of (I was only 13 when the decade began) and to discuss the tracks. The format will be the same every week with TOTP performances where available for those songs new to the top 10. So sit back and enjoy every top 10 hit of the 90s (eventually). So sit back and enjoy the year because there Ain't No Doubt this is
January 2, 20223 yr Exciting - loads of great dance in 1992. Now I can shamelessly plug my Now! 1992 compilation that I made and Colm kindly made the cover art for.
January 6, 20223 yr Author 11th JANUARY 18 New entries in the top 40 and 33 in the top 75 are both records which are set this week as 1992 explodes into action, but you won’t see much evidence in the top 10 of that turnaround. Queen make it four weeks on the trot as “Bohemian Rhapsody/ These Are The Days Of Our Lives” shifts another 46,000 sales to take its monthly tally to 764,000 as it now looks unlikely to break the million mark in its current incarnation. N0dbGGvsjf8 Its victory was easy in the end, The KLF and Tammy Wynette keep the pressure on nominally at No 2 but with just 23,000 sales they’re still trailing way behind, and don’t hold out hope for the new Right Said Fred single, they climb 5-3 but their sales are off 32% to just 21,000, and even Hammer takes a hit of 23% to 17,000 as he progresses 8-4 (17,000), that’s now his second highest peaking single of his career lagging behind only 1990’s “U Can’t Touch This” which made No 3. In short never have we had a week where only 3 tracks clear the 20,000 mark- not a good start to 92. After 4 weeks at the No 7 position Kym Sims’ “Too Blind To See It” is finally on the move again rising 7-5 (16,000) and Shaft lift 9-7 (14,000). Heading the wrong way are Diana Ross 3-6 (16,000) and George Michael & Elton John 4-8 (14,000) as it slips past the 300,000 mark, easily Michael’s biggest hit since “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)”. Onto the new hits and bounding 20-9 (14,000) this week is the new single by Wet, wet, wet called “Goodnight Girl”. The group’s first 7 singles all made the top 20 but since then 4 releases have all missed that same marker with their last single “Put The Light On” flopping at No 56 last year. It looks as though releasing a new single as this quiet time of year has reaped rewards though as it now becomes their biggest hit in 2 years, parent album “High On The Happy Side” had been held back in lieu of a big hit single and should now be in shops next month. WMxiRN2tikg Suffering a distribution leak last week which saw it enter at No 48 The Prodigy’s third single “Everybody In The Place EP” improves 48-10 (13,000) to become their second top 10 hit on the trot. The title track to the EP was actually available in a substantially different version on their first release “What Evil Lurks EP” last year and so they appear to be pulling off the same trick that the KLF proved could be so lucrative of recycling old tracks and souping them up for a new release. An album is promised later in the year. WY87o9IZXWg 1- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/ THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES- Queen (46,000) 2- JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT- The KLF/ Tammy Wynette (23,000) 3- DON’T TALK JUST KISS- Right Said Fred (21,000) 4- ADDAMS GROOVE- Hammer (17,000) 5- TOO BLIND TO SEE IT- Kym Sims (16,000) 6- WHEN YOU TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME- Diana Ross (16,000) 7- ROOBARB AND CUSTARD- Shaft (14,000) 8- DON’T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME- Elton John & George Michael (14,000) 9- GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet, wet, wet (14,000) 10- EVERYBODY IN THE PLACE E.P- The Prodigy (13,000) http://i.imgur.com/VOnU0Z3.jpg http://i.imgur.com/CRJZP7d.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/VT4x3TD.jpg
January 6, 20223 yr Goodnight Girl really saved Wet Wet Wet's chart career. My favourite song by Wet Wet Wet is easily their debut single 'Wishing I Was Lucky' from 1987, which is a great song I think, rather Crowded House sounding.
January 6, 20223 yr Author 18TH JANUARY http://pacechronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/3474558151_220d8ed0e2.jpg With sales only off marginally at a still impressive 44,000 Queen make light work of another week at the top, the re-issued “Bohemian Rhapsody” is still attracting much of the promo though “These Are The Days Of Our Lives” is improving at radio. Overall sales now top the 800,000 mark. On the album charts both the group’s “Greatest Hits” packages are well inside the top 10 with their last studio album “Innuendo” still climbing at No 32 as it revives slightly. X8uPIquE5Oo The Prodigy record a sales increase of 131% as they leap 10-2 (30,000) and could pose a serious threat to Queen next week, and don’t write off Wet, wet, wet who improve themselves 9-3 (27,000) with an increase of 98%- next week could be an interesting one. http://hw-static.worldstarhiphop.com/u/pic/2014/11/wAq6AciMT7XQ.jpg Steve “Silk” Hurley is now the producer on two tracks in the top 10, Kym Sims’s “Too Blind To See It” which sticks at No 5 (18,000) and Ce Ce Peniston’s “We Got A Love Thang” which floats 13-7 (17,000). Peniston is a former Ms Black Arizona, a title she won in 1989 at just 19, she swapped the catwalk for the charts and first single “Finally” garnered a lot of airplay though it stopped at No 29 back in November, her second single “We Got A Love Thang” is certainly hitting the spot and the dancefloor’s, rumours are that Kym Sims also appears on backing vocals! __ugaiz323k It’s been over 4 years since Kiss were in the top 10, on that occasion “Crazy Crazy Nights” made No 4, but they were asked to provide a track for the new film “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” and they chose a cover of the 1973 No 18 single by Argent called “God Gave Rock & Roll To You” and it becomes just their second top 10 single in the UK in their long career as it charges 21-9 (14,000). ybmEK64OkjA Genesis can regard their new album as a success, “We Can’t Dance” opened at No 1 (their 5th chart topper) and lifts 6-5 to return to the top 5 for the first time since its November release. First single “No Son Of Mine” made No 6 and now “I Can’t Dance” leaps 45-10 (14,000) to become their 7th top 10 single but only the second time they have pulled off back to back top tenners. It comes with a promo which mocks several jeans adverts and there’s even a parody of the Jackson video for “Black Or White” just for entertainment value. sNJVFloPIVA The KLF collapse 2-4 (20,000), Hammer reverses 4-6 (18,000) and Right Said Fred tumble 3-8 (15,000) 1- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/ THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES- Queen (44,000) 2- EVERYBODY IN THE PLACE E.P- The Prodigy (30,000) 3- GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet wet wet (27,000) 4- JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT- The KLF/ Tammy Wynette (20,000) 5- TOO BLIND TO SEE IT- Kym Sims (18,000) 6- ADDAM’S GROOVE- Hammer (18,000) 7- WE GOT A LOVE THANG- Ce Ce Peniston (17,000) 8- DON’T TALK JUST KISS- Right Said Fred (15,000) 9- GOD GAVE ROCK & ROLL TO YOU II- Kiss (14,000) 10- I CAN’T DANCE- Genesis (14,000) http://i.imgur.com/VOnU0Z3.jpg
January 6, 20223 yr I Can't Dance isn't one of Genesis' best songs and completely different to their usual style of music but it is undoubtedly catchy, and as a parody record of jeans adverts it is effective. They would also parody televangelists in 'Jesus, He Knows Me' which is a much better song production-wise imo. The CeCe Peniston track I don't know very well but on listening to it there, it is good. Before today, I assumed 'Finally' was her first top 10 hit! Edited January 6, 20223 yr by TheSnake
January 7, 20223 yr I like that top 5, but tracks 6-10 not so much, I Can't Dance was Genesis worst single ever by a huge margin
January 7, 20223 yr Sugarcubes at 27. I was thinking I had never heard of them, then bam! It’s Bjork?!
January 7, 20223 yr We’ve skipped another week Gezza, showing the first week of Goodnight Girl at number 1.
January 7, 20223 yr That Prodigy record was easily the best track in the top 10 (despite not even being particularly high up in my ranking of their singles). Wish a band like them did well nowadays. Queen's obviously a great track but a re-release and Kym Sims is catchyl Rest not so good - I personally think Tammy Wynette made the KLF sound too poppy compared to their other harder sounding singles. Never would have thought Right Said Fred would be ultra right wing anti vaxx gits 30 years later.
January 7, 20223 yr I like that top 5, but tracks 6-10 not so much, I Can't Dance was Genesis worst single ever by a huge margin No way. I like it and it's catchy.
January 8, 20223 yr Sugarcubes at 27. I was thinking I had never heard of them, then bam! It’s Bjork?! Yes, Bjork was in Sugarcubes before going solo. They had a bunch of great singles, especially from the first album, Birthday is a classic! Think their only top 40 was in 92 with Hit
January 8, 20223 yr I read that Bjork was in the Sugababes for a second - that must have been a very early lineup change.
January 9, 20223 yr A great start to 1992 with the debut chart appearance and performance from Björk (as part of the Sugarcubes), as well as Blue Pearl and the stunning performance of “Stay” by Shakespeares Sister. <3 That was the follow-up to “Goodbye Cruel World” which cruelly flopped in at #59 the previous year. A shame that we didn't get a performance or breaker for “Take Me Away” by Cappella. Loleatta Holloway sounding great as ever. 3Hyf_9WU8Vk/ I see it wasn't that close between The Prodigy and Queen then.. a shame that they never got a number 1 until 4 years later, I think “Everybody In The Place” would have completely deserved it!
