Posted January 31, 201015 yr List some songs that you feel sort of underperformed or would have been much huger if released today and not a few/several years ago. First ten off my head: Britney Spears - "I'm A Slave 4 U" - way ahead of its time surely. Groove Armada & Mutya Buena - "Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)" - if only it was the first single. If it was released last year, no doubt this would have been #1. Aaliyah - "We Need A Resolution" Garbage - "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go)" - all it needed was an advert & instant top 5 hit ala Noisettes! Kelly Osbourne - "One Word" - this is a tricky one. I think it could have been huger but her notoriety & fame would have prevented it from being bigger anyway. Joss Stone - "Fell In Love With A Boy" - say what you want about her but had she arrived post-"Back To Black/Rockferry" instead of back in 2003, this would have been her "Rehab/Mercy". Nelly Furtado - "Try" - still my favourite single of hers. It would have been big had it been a single from Loose rather than Folklore Rachel Stevens - "So Good", "Negotiate With Love", & "I Said Never Again" also all come to mind. Kylie Minogue's "In My Arms" would also have definitely been a #1 if released now as a lead single. No Doubt's "Hella Good" would have been much higher than #12 if released today - fits the current music scene to a T. List some others and I'm sure I'd probably agree. :P Edited January 31, 201015 yr by Who Me?
January 31, 201015 yr Kylie Minogue's "In My Arms" would also have definitely been a #1 if released now as a lead single. I would have thought "Wow" then "In My Arms" as the first two. Also, Beyonce's "Single Ladies" - If only that was the lead track from "I Am... Sasha Fierce" instead of "If I Were A Boy" - That might have been her number 1 instead. It truly deserved to rank higher.
January 31, 201015 yr Author Jamelia's "Beware Of The Dog" was definitely a missed opportunity. Probably a few years ahead of its time as well. Same goes for Alesha's "Lipstick" - that was a top 10 if ever I heard one!
January 31, 201015 yr Mary J Blige - Be Without You Release Christmas week in 2005 for some bizarre reason and is a brilliant track. Should've released in late January/early February 2006. With the sales lull at the time, Mary J Blige could've easily gone top 10.
January 31, 201015 yr List some songs that you feel sort of underperformed or would have been much huger if released today and not a few/several years ago. First ten off my head: Groove Armada & Mutya Buena - "Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)" - if only it was the first single. If it was released last year, no doubt this would have been #1. Totally agree. The video didn't help though even though at the time I wasn't particularly bothered about the video. The song was excellent, that's all that mattered to me. But it had been widely available for around six months prior to its release. When it climbed 13-08 (or something?) I was gutted the song didn't climb higher with its physical release. Definitely should've been the lead single, with a better video. Missed opportunity? Yes.
January 31, 201015 yr if we're talking about music that's ahead of its time, I'd say all of Aaliyah's final material from 2000 onwards and Darren Hayes first few solo singles (they just didn't seem to fit into 2002's musical climate whatsoever, but would do now) also agree with Rachel Stevens circa 2005 as well as Song 4 Mutya
January 31, 201015 yr Nelly Furtado - "Try" - still my favourite single of hers. It would have been big had it been a single from Loose rather than Folklore How do you make that out? Do you think it would have got better promotion? Or would it be that more people were interested in her because of Man Eater?
January 31, 201015 yr ^^ Destroy Everything You Touch was far better, I still have absolutely no idea how that managed to not be successful. :(
January 31, 201015 yr i don't know if it would be a big hit if it was released now but the one by kylie definitely should have been in my opinion. such a wicked song.. and as much as i dislike joss stone i completely agree with what said about fell in love with a boy
January 31, 201015 yr I know Crazy In Love - Beyonce and Toxic - Britney Spears both went to number to number 1 and everything but I think if released today their sales would have been massive!

January 31, 201015 yr Some good choices made, but one I would definitely add to the list is ..... Victoria Beckham - Let Your Head Go. Yes it peaked at UK#3 in the first week of January 2004, but quickly slumped down the charts, after being critically mauled at the time. v1s2kUw2Uak Indeed the reception to the song and video was so hostile that Victoria Beckham abandoned her solo music career and aborted the release of her 2nd album "Open Your Eyes" full of mostly uptempo electropop dance tracks. Yet this track was produced by Stuart Price who less than two years later produced Madonna's Hung Up & "Confession's ..." dance album due to her being so impressed with this single. Whilst the hilarious satirical video looks much better in 2010's music climate post the arrival of Lady GaGa (hell Victoria is even seen drinking from a teacup!); and of course Britain's biggest female popstar is currently someone who belongs to a most popular UK girl group and is currently the wife of an England international footballer. Little wonder that at the end of 2004 this song featured at #34 in a MTV Hits countdown for the worst records of the first half of the decade; yet by the end of 2009 it featured at #34 on MTV Hits countdown of the Best Videos of the last decade.
January 31, 201015 yr KT Tunstall's Another Place To Fall criminally missed the top 40 becuase it was one of the last songs released from the album. I think it could have made top 20 if it had been a lead single.
January 31, 201015 yr Rachel Stevens 'So Good' would easily have been huge especially if she released it after her stint on Strictly! Had JLS not been around now, VS could have been pretty decent had they gone through XFactor and released what they did. Also Omarion 'Ice Box' would have surely been a 2009/2010 number 1?
January 31, 201015 yr Holly Valance - State Of Mind and Desire. Now everyone's doing the same thing she was doing back then

I actually completely agree with this :o who would have thought that Victoria was so ahead of her time! This Groove wasn't bad either, both songs were much better than some of the rubbish Melanie B managed to have hits with, and indeed Victoria's earlier solo hits
