Really pleased the perry has been added and rihanna is A-list :D

I don't get why they are snubbing Alex, i think her last two singles were far superior to the other two from this era (BB and BH)

I hope Alesha is playlisted soon too, i hated that song at first but it's very catchy now. I love it.

Are they gonna move Fake Blood up the list or what?? Bleedin' scardy cats...

It makes me laugh that Radio 1 A list crap like Ellie Goulding-The Writer and dont even add Alexandra Burke-Start without you. Its a Joke. Well all night long got to #4 without radio 1 so start without you will still be a big hit

What

Yes, that was a joke.

*just proves that you can't judge whether the play-list is good or not basing on your personal taste, e.g. IMO The Writer fully deserves its place while SWY might not deserve even C-list in terms of quality*

Very nice playlist. Shame about Alex. They've got a problem with her. She should be fine. I also think Shontelle will do amazing. Impossible sounds really good on the radio.

Katy  Brilliant to see this added so early. Was expecting the next couple of weeks, but not this week...

Bleh at them playlisting that awful Kanye song though. :puke:

I don't know why people keep complaining about Alexandra not being playlisted (well, I do actually know why. It's 'cos people love to complain, obv). She's already proven that she doesn't particularly need their support and she'll do fine without it. Though I guess if she misses number one now people will probably blame Radio 1 for that fact, rather than the fact it's an awful song that wouldn't get anywhere if it didn't have a fairly big-ish name attached to it.

And to marbb or whatever your name is, your point about the fact that some of these songs won't chart well so therefore they shouldn't be supported is rubbish. The whole point of the playlist is to introduce the listeners to new music. The chart is only one very small way of gauging how successful they've been in that aim; just because something hasn't charted well doesn't mean jack $h!t. I really pity you for having such a one-track view on music to be honest. =/ Not like anything could change your mind though so I don't know why I'm even wasting my time.

I personally think both of them are utter $h!t and neither should be supported - but all that proves is the R1 playlist can't be called 'a joke' just because they don't playlist the music any particular person (including you) wants them to playlist.

Outsider's opinion:

Playlists are never based on anyone's taste. There are people who decide but they look things from the station's point of view. What they think fits in the profile.

And there's loads of corruption. The quality of song means absolutely nothing. Someone say they support their own...this means particularly their newcomer list Sound of...

Also they have to fit in new additions each week. If it's a slow season, they might list more surprising acts such as Band of Horses.

Who really listens to Radio 1 anyway? If you're over 40 and ugly you're always an underdog in terms of playlists. Even being cool is not enough then. They will probably never playlist Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, The Cure, Prince etc who all still have it. No matter what the music's like.

So Radio 1 plays songs THEY think kids want to hear to stay cool. The only respect Radio 1 (and its equivalents in other countries) deserve is the occasional role as hitmaker because sometimes they actually bring us something new.

Maybe R1 have decided they don't need to support Alexandra? I think it's immature to say a radio station has something against an artist  She hasn't done anything to them has she? ANL did fantastically well without their support which just goes to show they're not as almighty as y'all make out. I know loads of people my age that don't even listen to their claptrap and are all still up to date on all the current music through mediums like the internet, other radio stations and TV channels.

Plus her new song is a pile of turd :/ Still better than 75% of what they have ion this playlist but man it's awful and I've liked everything else she's done.

I loike that Perry is added. Does this mean the video will be out before her album?

breathtakingly tragic. the remaining 80% of the airtime is taken up by a rotation of about 20 ancient (dated?) classics on rotation. ruined my daily routines for a significant proportion of my life now :(

HOWEVER, first Dinosaur Pile-Up now Pulled Apart By Horses? i know its only 1-upfront but AMAZING.

i have no idea either. but please playlist Tubelord/Dananananaykroyd next time <3

That is so true about Heart and very funny. I had never noticed that but they do stick religiously to about 20 old time classics that are played constantly Otis Reddng-Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, The Pointer Sisters-I'm so Excited or Jump,The Real Thing-You to Me, Abba-Dancng Queen, Lional Ritchie-Hello amougst them.Bad Boys has now joined this list, it is bloody well playing now. They are apparently the most popular commercial station in London though.

'All Night Long' only did so well as it was lucky enough to have pretty much blanket exposure and support everywhere else, see also Enrique and The Wanted (plus she had an advert to hold it up when it was falling). I still think her new single will reasonably do well without them but if they're really not supporting her any longer then there's only so long that luck can last for her, it's a slippery slope.

Yeah, there was a period of a few weeks where All Night Long was literally inescapable on the radio. Sort of like Empire State of Mind was earlier in the year. I think it helped that there was a Pitbull-less version on the album, as radio stations that don't play rap, such as Heart, were able to play the song.

I think you overestimate R1 influence greatly.Diana, Paloma,Ellie and Marina are supported heavily by R1 but all of them even struggle to break 200k in single sales and will be lucky to hit platinum in album sales. All Night Long still managed to go to No 1 in the Radio airplay charts without R1 support and some acts like Alex always seem to get good televison promotion as well. The Music video channels seem to have a huge influence on the charts these days as well.It is a long time since R1 was considered make or break or even the arbiter of success or All Time Low, Jonzi, Magnetic man, The XX and Vampire Weekend would dominate the charts and have huge sales.

Exactly - look at Jennifer Hudson's "Spotlight", never supported by Radio 1 and STILL managed to go to #1 on U.K. airplay as well, same with Whitney's "Million Dollar Bill" going top 5 (albeit by X-Factor) without Radio 1.

That was cos it was on local radio stations day in, day out.

These are rare instances though, most of the time you are pretty much screwed.

Marrb, do you ever even read people's responses to you?

The charts are not the only way of determining a band's success.
