I was in my local HMV at lunchtime and wondered what the point of these were...

BRYAN ADAMS "Bare Bones"

Standard CD: £9.99

Deluxe edition: £15.99 :o

ANNIE LENNOX "A Christmas Cornucopia"

Standard CD: £9.99

Deluxe edition: £19.99 :o :o

Both deluxe editions featured no extra tracks, just different packaging. BA was a cardboard sleeve with gold embossing, and Annie's was just a fancier cardboard sleeve.

Totally pointless in my opinion. I think that they only serve to confuse consumers.

Those deluxe edition albums you mentioned must be for the very very loyal fans.

Definitely not worth the extra money.

2-disc (either bonus CD or DVD versions) are worth more, but not double or extra (and they rarely get reduced as often - for example, I've seen Out of Control and Hard Candy deluxe editions for 20-odd quid in HMV quite recently - who's going to buy them at that price when the albums have been and gone ages ago?!?!)

I would say, if the regular edition is £8.99, then:

'UK Bonus Tracks' - should be same or £9.99

Bonus disc (of mostly already released stuff - Winehouse, Pixie Lott) - £9.99

Bonus disc of outtakes/demos/new tracks - £11 max - £10 if re-issue like Fame Monster

Bonus DVD - no more than £11

Bonus disc in big 'book' packaging - £15 max (ideally £12-13)

Fancy bull$h!t : 3 disc/poster/t-shirt/whatever - £20 maximum

Deluxe editions of old albums should be treated about the same - ideally £10 or less where the above is £11.

I hate when artists bring out Deluxe Editions!

I've bought the normal album then they release the same album but with 3 extra tracks!

it just makes me think why buy the album.. maybe aswell wait just incase :/

I always wait until Christmas to buy my favourite albums, that's usually when deluxe editions and re-releases happen.

Unless the deluxe edition is released along with the standard (e.g. Loud deluxe edition), then I buy it of course.

Deluxe editions released at the same time as the original album are fine but, when they are released a few months later, it's often a bit of a rip-off. Of course record companies might find that people simply stop buying the initial release on the assumption that there will be a deluxe edition.

Or the very very stupid ones? :P

A good idea would be this - if you've bought a standard issue album and they bring out a Deluxe - you could return it (with a receipt of purchase) and be upgraded to the newer edition. Everyone happy.
this is why i hate record companies. MONEY MONEY MONEYY

I hope you don't think that NOT releasing deluxe editions does NOT make them money sucking bastards?!

I pretty much always buy the deluxe editions if there is one.

Just bought Rihanna & Mariah Carey's latest ones. They only come with a DVD of the making of but for £2 quid more of whatever it was I don't see a problem with it.

If we're talking about re-releases... it depends on what is being added. For example The Fame Monster? Totally worth it. Kesha's upcoming re-release? Totally worth it.

If it's one of these ones with only 2 new tracks, forget it. Throw in a DVD and I'll think about it.

Agree with everything said here. I'd always prefer to buy a Deluxe over a standard version, when they're released at the same time. I have to admit I am a bit of a sucker for Deluxe Editions though, but only for artists I really, really like.

I bought Cheryl Cole's highly pointless £21.99 costing '3 Words', which was housed in a rectangular box and included a post cards and a TOTE BAG. :puke2:  I also have the Take That Progress deluxe on order. £29.99 for the CD, a DVD of their documentary and some postcards in a box. All that matters is that I think it's worth it though. I'd never spend such amounts on artists I wasn't passionate about.

I would have bought Rihanna's 'Couture' edition of Loud if she had released it here, very pretty.

I don't mind them if they provide new music, especially when it's not just a couple of new tracks and nearly a new album, ala 'Fame Monster' and 'Cannibal'. I think it's mainly to bridge a gap between albums.
Look at it this way, if a deluxe edition is double the price, hardly anybody will have it and in 50 years time, it'll be rare and probably worth 20 times what the normal CD is.

If you buy an album on iTunes when its just released then you're a mug, because 6 moths later there will be a deluxe edition with twice the number of tracks for the same price.

You're better off cherry picking now and completing your album when the deluxe version comes out later.

I never buy deluxe editions. They should be on the main album and stop using filler tracks to warrant the use of a deluxe edition.
I'm horrified by this attitude, especially for a board that is largely populated by gay men. I mean, it's like choosing to wear Primark over Diesel.

I think it's fair enough if the deluxe version is released at the same time as the standard edition as that way you can choose which you want.

I've also bought quite a few re-issues of 80s albums this year - 2cd sets by the likes of Madness, Thompson Twins, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Rick Astley etc; where what were originally single discs with around 10-12 tracks are put out as double discs with 25+ tracks and sold at £8-£10. Loads of bonus stuff at a reasonable price!
