January 8, 201114 yr WHAT!!! My goodness. Its on Tv advertised for Amazon. Hmv is so stupid with their prices seriously. £14.99 for an album when its £7.99 in Tesco i know where Im going. Yes it contributes to Tescos inevitable world domination driven by insane consumerism. its not that extreme most new albums are round the same price mark in both stores give or take 20-50p either way and as i said i would rather give 50p to hmv than tesco as tesco dont care about the cds and are not music specialists!!
January 8, 201114 yr Does anyone know which HMV shops are being closed, and when they're going to be closed?
January 8, 201114 yr Does anyone know which HMV shops are being closed, and when they're going to be closed? I don't think they've decided themselves yet. As other people have suggested, I suspect that the first to go will be "duplicates", i.e. where they have two stores in the same town. All they have said about timing is that it will be in the course of this year.
January 8, 201114 yr Beginning of the end for HMV as a high street retailer? They could have blossomed if they had got it right after the demise of Woolworths and Zavvi however they seemed to think this would give them market dominance and they didn't need to be competitive - There is a HMV near me and just down the road is a Tesco Extra - Tesco are usually £3-4 cheaper on CDs, £5+ cheaper on DVDs and £10+ cheaper on Games so no wonder why HMV are going to the wall. Also why on earth would anyone want to shop in a HMV store and pay £12.99 for a CD when their own website is offering the same product for £7 with free delivery! i dont know what hmv you people go into but i havent paid 12.99 for a cd in over 10 years!!

As other people have suggested, I suspect that the first to go will be "duplicates", i.e. where they have two stores in the same town. How many HMV stores are there nationally, and what percentage/fraction of stores are being closed?
January 8, 201114 yr ^ Same. My HMV store isn't expensive. Only a few things are a bit more than usual.
January 8, 201114 yr HMV are too expensive, online and supermarkets sell things cheaper and if they can't compete with that then tough. there is no point blaming tesco for bringing you a product cheaper lol just because they are HMV the music store doesn't mean they should be supported when you can get the exact same product cheaper elsewhere or online. albums sales are going down everywhere, it is thanks to stores like tesco and asda then haven't plummeted futher as they are bringing albums to huge numbers of people at cheaper prices. if all you care about is how much money is in your pocket why not just download it for free illegally now when its released and buy the cd for 99p in a car boot sale in a few years???
January 8, 201114 yr I agree with some of the points made, but I'd be GUTTED if HMV close. There was a report at the tail end of last year saying that they could be the next Woolworths. Yes, the catalogue product instore is ridiculously priced in some cases (it always has been), but they really are competing well on chart/new releases in store and the 2 for £10 deals are great. I can't imagine going into the city centre or to a shopping centre and not visiting HMV. It's just great to browse through their stuff, and it's worth an extra pound or two to do that. We cannot rely on supermarkets for our CD's. The amount of shelf space given to CD's has shrunk in the last year or so, and it will continue to do so if demand falls. Supermarkets are understandably ruthless when it comes to this. No retailer can compete with a £7-£8 price tag on a chart CD, but the supermarkets will make a loss on that item to get you in store in the hope that you buy other items while you are in. I cannot fault HMV for not matching these prices when it is a core part of their business. In my opinion, one of the biggest problems last year for CD sales was that the release schedule was very poor. Take That show that the potential is still there for a big new album, but it was a fairly uninspiring year. Downloading is obviously an issue too, but if there isn't good product in store then people won't buy CD's. Here's hoping that HMV can pull through. a brillant point well made - its all about the experience of shopping in hmv and i like you would pay 2 quid more.you always end up browesing for ages whereas in tesco youre cd shopping is over in seconds!!
January 8, 201114 yr Okay :( I want the one in my hometown to stay, there is only one in the town though so hopefully it will be safe. How many HMV stores are there nationally, and what percentage/fraction of stores are being closed? There are around 300 so 20% are expected to close.
January 8, 201114 yr We had two HMVs in our town before I left in August. When I came back, they had solo one of them to a new independent music store called 'Head Music,' (whose name I adore for obvious reasons) which has a much bigger stock of CDs and vinyl than our HMV does. I can't see it lasting beyond a year, but it's nice to see new indie stores entering the market. where was the second hmv in belfast? yeah head is good...who owns it though?? love the huge selection of 7"vinyl for 99p - got radar detector by darwin deez this week and the deluxe version of plan bs album and the new magnetic man album for a fiver each!!

Didn't realise Brett was talking about Belfast! There has only ever been 1 HMV in the city centre - there was another one at Forestside at one point: I assume its still there! Head was formed by a former MD of Zavvi and they opened 5 stores on the mainland in 2009 but all closed within a year. They seem to have opened a few new stores towards the end of last year. From Wikipedia...... Head Entertainment operated stores in Bristol Broadmead,[7] Dundee,[8] Leeds,[9] and Merry Hill.,[10] Bluewater,[11] Manchester Arndale Centre,[2] Cardiff & Liverpool One.[12][13] They were all former Zavvi outlets. In December 2009 the company started a closing down sale in all stores. As of the 10th of January 2010, The only remaining Head Stores are Bristol and Dundee (leases extended through 2011) with Merryhill's lease till Easter 2010. Leeds' Head store closed on the 10th of Jan 2010. The remaining stores stocked a limited music chart, while recent DVD releases come in the form of unused rental copies. Game stock is nominal and no clothing is sold within these stores. The Bristol store closed on March 27, 2010[citation needed], but reopened a week later under the name "Head CD DVD Books"[citation needed] with a logo incorporating a side view of a head. The store contains some new stock[citation needed] including clothing and selection of books. The store layout remains the same however there is some interior decor to show the change of the new store[citation needed]. The former Zavvi store in Bromley was taken up by "Head CD & DVD", (using the "side-profile-of-head" logo as now used at the above Bristol store) some months after Head Entertainment had taken on its tranche of ex-Zavvi store sites. It is unclear whether there is any direct operational link between this Head and the now-defunct Head Entertainment. The Bromley store subsequently moved from the Zavvi site into another store location (with the former Zavvi site being taken up by New Look), and the later Head site was still trading as of Autumn 2010; as with the Bristol store, the Bromley site carries a selection of new-release and catalogue products. In December 2010, a new store opened in Belfast's Victoria Square Shopping Centre Edited January 8, 201114 yr by Shaky Fan
January 8, 201114 yr i thought for a while it would be open for 3/4 months of the year starting in sept/oct for the big final quarter when they can make a profit and ending with a closing sale in january.it makes sense i suppose... yeah thats right theres one in forestside but i dont consider it a belfast store for some reason lol!!
January 8, 201114 yr Music Week have clarified the closure programme. The closures will be in both HMV and Waterstone's which is owned by HMV. The stores to close will be 40 HMV stores and 20 Waterstone's with the closures being focussed “in large-city conurbations and may be in close proximity to each other - thus resulting in a degree of duplication in relation to local demand” according to a company press statement.
January 19, 201114 yr HMV suppliers hit by credit blow Source:MW 09:46 | Wednesday January 19, 2011 By Ben Cardew Shares in HMV fell sharply last night after news emerged that the company’s suppliers are struggling to get credit insurance for supplies to the entertainment retailer. The BBC reports that two music and entertainment companies say they can no longer get credit insurance for additional sales to HMV, quoting an email sent by the head of credit and collections at one major UK manufacturer and distributor of CDs and DVDs, which says “our credit insurers have significantly reduced our insured credit limit on all HMV entities”. The news this morning follows HMV issuing a profit warning earlier this month after a bad Christmas trading period. While HMV still expects to make a profit on the year, it appears that insurers may have been spooked by the earlier news. HMV says it has a healthy in-stock situation, adding, “In light of recent comment on credit insurance cover, HMV Group wishes to clarify that, following the peak trading period, credit insurers are reviewing the level of cover they provide on the group. “Whilst this has resulted in the reduction in the availability of credit insurance to certain of the company's suppliers, our business remains a core channel to market for them. We continue to maintain excellent relations with our suppliers and have had no difficulty in obtaining stock.” Suppliers take out credit insurance on their goods to protect themselves if a retailer goes bust. If they are unable to obtain this, they can continue to trade but will not be covered if the company goes under. A similar thing happened to Woolworth’s in late 2008, when credit insurers tightened their terms of trade as a result of the company’s ongoing woes. The company went into administration months later. Given the importance of HMV for music sales – it accounted for 28.0% of all expenditure on recorded music in 2009 – it is unlikely labels will cease to supply HMV with CDs. What is more, unlike Woolworths, HMV remains a profitable business and is expected to announce annual profits of nearly £50m in the spring. Nevertheless, shares in HMV fell some 13% yesterday.
January 20, 201114 yr I went into HMV the other day just to have a look at what they have and OMG! They are so expensive. I don't want them to disappear but they have so much going against them at the moment. I saw a Blu Ray for £17.99 in store, £12.99 on their web site and £10.99 on another web site? they even out price themselves. Also their search on their web site is awful. You put The Vaccines - Post Breakup Sex and it doesn't come up with what you've asked for but returns about 500 artists and songs that have nothing to do with what I've asked for? They can't be taken seriously if they don't clean this rubbish up. I can't afford to spend £18 on a Blu Ray from HMV, especially when I know I can get the same thing elsewhere for about £7 cheaper. Their shops might go but they need to sort their web site out if they want to stay around. Even with their downloads they are one of the most expensive online
January 20, 201114 yr Does anyone know which HMV shops are being closed, and when they're going to be closed? This. I'm still quite gutted about this. -_-
January 20, 201114 yr Well, I live in Weston-super-Mare and we had a store OPEN here about 2 months ago. Strange. To be honest, I only ever buy sale items in store HMV. New CD's, DVD's & games are so expensive... With any sort of media, it's just so much cheaper to buy online. I do however buy 99% of all my new CD's from HMV.com, they're amazing :)

You put The Vaccines - Post Breakup Sex and it doesn't come up with what you've asked for but returns about 500 artists and songs that have nothing to do with what I've asked for? I had a couple of gift vouchers so I went into the Belfast branch and spotted a couple of DVDs at £9.99 each. Out of curiousity I checked their on-line prices thinking they'd probably be a quid cheaper (fair enough!) but both were selling there for £6.99! So I bought them online and picked up a couple of those 2 for £10 offers....
January 21, 201114 yr What I also don't like is you can't use HMV vouchers online? I'm like it's the same bloody company....
