I'm thinking of those that had long periods of minimal sales between their original new-release phase, and their revival, for whatever reason.

The most obvious current one is Adele's '19', of course.

In recent years I can think of at least two others : Amy Winehouse 'Frank' & Nickelback 'All The Right Reasons'.

Can you think of any others (they don't have to be recent ones).

[Hopefully this is thread is relevant enough for the moderators not to move it elsewhere ;)]

Billy Joel's Piano Man - The Very Best Of did it 3 times (and actually reached a new peak each time, oddly enough). It first charted at #40 in 2004, got to #13 in 2006, #11 in 2008 and #7 in 2010. The latter of those being due to the revival of 'She's Always A Woman' AFAIA, but dunno what caused its previous 2 re-entries.

Also, all of the Michael Jackson and The Beatles albums that re-charted in the last couple of years for obvious reasons.

And 'Exile On Main St.' by The Rolling Stones.

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours re-entered after Glee did an episode about it!
'Five Leaves Left' and 'Pink Moon' by Nick Drake are classic examples of this. Both sold less than 10,000 copies whilst Drake was still alive, by the 90s they were selling about 100,000 copies a year.

Eva Cassidy also sold practically nothing while she was alive but has had 3 #1 albums and 2 further top 5s since her death. Although none of these were released during her lifetime so they don't really count for this thread :P

Great examples!

Jeff Buckley's Grace is pretty much like those.

Bob Marley's Legend is one of the albums people will never forget.

Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP was in top 75 for several weeks last year.

Queen's GH keeps returning and was back in the Top 40 abums last week despite there being a more complete compilation available called Absolute Greatest.
Mumford And Sons' Sigh No More came and went very quickly before eventually reaching the top ten and staying there for months.

Although this never left the chart - it actually lodged its lowest chart placing to date (#71) last week!

Also, the gap between it entering at #11 and entering the top 10 for the first time wasn't really *that* long:

11-30-49-60-61-53-62-64-49-45-39-33-20-7-...

But it did only peak at #2 in its 72nd week.

That was last in the top 75 in 2003 - I assume you mean 'Curtain Call - The Hits'? That has had a surprisingly long-lived return to the chart due to Recovery's success.

Actually it was the US charts.

This happens a lot since I follow both.

But yea Curtain Call has been a success recently.

Girls Aloud's 'The Sound of... Greatest Hits' reached #1 in November 2006, before floating around the top 100 for a while, before having a long disappearance from the chart and re-entering the top ten in early 2009 and has since had a fair while longer floating in the top 100.
Then of course there's Abba Gold. Holder of the record for the longest gap between spells at number one and also in second place in that list. It topped the chart in 1992 (for just one week), 1999 (for a total of five weeks in three separate runs) and 2008 (for two weeks).

Madonna's The Immaculate Collection - Entered the charts in Winter 1990 and stayed high in the chart throughout 1991. It spent years in the chart going here and there, and then in 2000 it jumped up the charts to number 8

Bob Marley - Legend - Entered in 1984, climbed as high as #12 in 1991

The Beatles' 1967-1970 and 1962-1966 - both entered in 1973 and re-entered last year at #4 and#5 due to the 're-mastered versions'

I was thinking more of albums that had left the charts altogether, before returning strongly.

Although it should be noted that its absence from the main chart was mostly due to it being budged-priced, not because people weren't buying it at all.

I know, that's why I pointed that out ;)

Madonna Immacualte collection has someone already has stated!!

Mariah Carey greatest hits first entered the charts 15.12.2001 at position 46!! Only staying in the charts for 4 weeks!!

It then peaked at number 7 in 2005 gaining popularity after the success of emancipation!!

It was last seen in the charts in 2008! Number 98!

With "Legend" getting TV adverts at the moment, expect a re-emergence in 2011 to add to it's performance
