Owl City - Umbrella Beach was an airplay #6 after Fireflies got to #1 it missed the Top 100.

Shame, as it was actually an ok song. :(

Oh yes :(.

Eliza Doolittle's "Skinny Genes" and "Mr Medicine" got good airplay too I think(heard them regularly) and they just wouldn't take off :(.

Although to be fair, in some of those cases (Take That, Dido, Lady GaGa), the tracks were all later singles from albums that already shifted bucketloads, so it's not REALLY the case that the tracks weren't popular with the public...

Exactly. If the album has already sold over 1.5 million, no wonder the act is having good airplay and isn't shifting singles.

Alex Gaudino and Kelly Rowland is inescapable at the moment. But it's had a pretty $h!t chart run. Isn't it something like 6-13-30 or something?!
No, she had bigger hits on radio. AIWFCIY went top 5 few times past years, I think it was #1.

can't say that rings a bell at all? <_<

A lot of the songs mentioned in this thread are very much 'Radio' hits IMO. Songs by the Feeling, 'Loving You Long Time' by Mariah etc are pleasant easy listening, inoffensive songs for the commercial stations and Radio2 to play during the day...but they don't exactly make you dash to iTunes to download them.

I'd be interested to see what Airplay/Sales ratio The Klaxons got back in 2007, when Radio1 was trying to force feed them to the public, despite all the promo 'Golden Skans' remains their only top10.

pretty much all of Michael Buble's songs except Haven't Met You Yet, Home in particular, a radio staple with Heart and Magic even now yet it peaked at 31
I suppose a lot of the time radio support acts to promote the album, rather than singles.

Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (#12 in 2009)

Cee-Lo Green - Bright Lights Bigger City (#13)

Suddenly I See... :o

So many brilliant songs there, so radio can force feed us songs so much that they become classics. :P

Alejandro was the third most played song of 2010, yet it only peaked at 7

I guess nearly everyone had bought Fame Monster then

Um, I somehow doubt that. I think people just didn't want to buy Alejandro, no matter how much it was forced on them.

I don't see how Fairytales of new york counts. It came out originally like over a decade ago, re enters the chart every year and actually, it's highest peak is 2.

And here's the ones from before 2000:

Bruce Springsteen – Human Touch (#11)

Del Amitri – Always The Last To Know (#13)

Richard Marx – Take This Heart (#13)

Lulu – Independence (#11)

REM – The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight (#17)

Pet Shop Boys – I Wouldn’t Normally Do This Kind Of Thing (#13)

I guess nearly everyone had bought Fame Monster then

The album's sold less than 2 million - that is less than 5% of the UK's population!!!!

Ellie Goulding - Lights is another one I can think of. Only reached 49 :(. Yet I heard it on the radio often. I still hear it sometimes.

It wasn't a big airplay hit at all. It only spent one week in the Airplay Top 100 at number 90.

Radio 1 seam to love Weightless by All Time Low, yet it flopped in somewhere ridiclous.
I seem to hear Boys Like Girls' 'The Great Escape' and 'Love Drunk' a LOT on Radio 1, despite the fact neither of them reached the top 40.
