I don't see how Maroon 5 was an obvious massive hit at all until after its release date (fair enough after then).

Also, maybe I just had lower expectations but One Direction are actually holding up a lot better than I thought they would be. I never considered the possibility of it being more than a one-week wonder personally!

Also, I'm actually starting to think Maroon 5 might be #1 next week. Dappy is more likely but I do think Maroon 5 have one more shot, although I'm certain their sales will decrease a fair bit and I think they're likely to decrease this week as well (they have done very well to not be decreasing until week 5/6 with a held-back release though to be fair ). Sak Noel is a pretty certain #1 the next week though. Unless it does a Stereo Love...

In a way I sort of want MLJ to get #1 just so people don't piss me off for years to come by constantly saying it 'should have been a #1'.

Maroon 5 are so unlucky. They've spent 2 weeks at number 2 with Makes Me Wonder, and this week are looking likely to spend a 2nd week at number 2 with Moves Like Jagger

This will be their third week at #2.

I think Dappy will most probably go to #1, but that just depends if OneD can still have a big lead or if Maroon5 get #1 again on Saturday say and then build a lead which would make it difficult for Dappy to catch up, but otherwise Dappy will get #1.

The video has literally been everywhere for at least 5-6 weeks?

Maroon 5 should definitely reduce to 59p, but i doubt they will with how well its already doing.

I don't like the idea of the top chart positions being decided by what is essentially a 'price war'.

Introduce random oldies at 59p or squeeze a few extra sales from a dying single by all means,

but I'd like MLJ to be number one on a level playing field, not just because it's been reduced

to 'bargain bin' status.

I also want Maroon 5 at #1 sometime. I think they will do it. Don't know when though. I agree with you, I think some people might be over-estimating Dappy.

And Sak Noel aswell. It reminds me a bit of how I thought We No Speak Americano was a sure-fire #1, but then only debuted at #5. It might do that aswell. Chart lower than we expect, but then still climb. It seems like everybody knows the song already, but I thought that about WNSA aswell.

'Moves Like Jagger' sounds like the type of song all the X Factor finalists 2011 are likely to perform in their group performance. So yes, that will basically promote the song 'I Gotta Feeling' style and boost sales of the song even more.

Yeah thats true I guess, but price is just one factor, i think its never a level playing field though between any songs.

So wait did everyone expect Moves Like Jagger to be so huge? I definitely didnt. Its very, very infectous though!

Well, I expected it to be huge about 12 hours after it was released.

 So you didnt before it was released? :P

I knew it'd make top 10, but didnt think it'd be #2 while Dont Go and Heaven were at #25 & #26 weeks later! (I guess who could have predicted that )

Well, I thought it could be a hit, since it was everywhere else in the world. I wasn't 100% sure though, since you get those hits where it's big in everything except the UK, and obviously the artists aren't popular here atm either, and I thought it would debut in the chart at #25 or something, and then climb near the top of the charts a month or two later, like Poker Face, Airplanes, etc, rather than go there straight-away.

It all depends on what factors affecting a track's sales you consider to be 'fair' or not.

Some tracks may have massively more promo than others but I don't think many

people would consider that to be unfair competition. Heck, some tracks are simply

*better* than others :)

Price however is a pretty crude tactic. In the early 2000s, along with the release to

radio several weeks before physical release creating massive pent-up demand, the

CD singe was 1.99 in the first week rising to 3.99 thereafter. This led to an even

greater frenzy to buy in the ist week to secure a high chart position.

Imagine the effect on today's charts if tracks routinely started out at 59p (or even lower)

and rose to 99p in the second week.......

Though I could be overestimating Dappy, I just have a feeling it'll be #1 and wouldn't surprise me if it gets close to or over 100k. Having said that, its going to be incredibly front loaded and it wouldnt surprise if Maroon 5 climb to #1 on itunes by the weekend again. Sak Noel could go either way but I suspect a #1 could be on the cards, especially as I'm sure there will be multiple versions on itunes (radio edit, explicit radio edit, original mix etc etc). Who knows though, there isn't much out the 3rd October so anything could happen that week but I suspect MLJ will be under 60k by then.

The XF group performances have very little effect on the chart. I Gotta Feeling did climb 8-6 on the chart that week but IIRC it didn't see any meaningful increase after the performance so I think it was just a coincidence it happened to rise that week. And later performances of songs not in the chart didn't even see the songs go top 100.

So does nobody expect Jason Derulo to be a contender next week? The last one went to #1 for two weeks and that was DREADFUL, but this one has an insanely catchy hook (it's sort of like What If from his last album) and I think is going top three easily.

^^possibly because the XF groups performances are all crap

I still can't see MLJ ever being number 1, we are overdue a long running number 2 for this year (I'm not saying that's purely the reason that it will never get to number 1 ofc. but I just feel that Dappy & Sak Noel will initially be enough to beat them for the week)

top 3/5, but not number 1 imo, I don't think this has the same amount of hype

Chartstats again :drama: I looked up Maroon 5's MLJ and the chart run for it was 3-3-2. They forgot to add the week of 17/9/11 in.

With the Dappy/Sak Noel/Maroon situation, I still think Dappy and Sak will debut at number one, but both will be very frontloaded - especially Sak, it'll have a Barbra Streisand type-run and spend about 8 weeks in the chart. Maroon 5 on the other hand will spend 18 weeks

I think it may sell well, but I can't see it being any higher than #4 next week. It will be behind Dappy, Maroon 5 and One Direction.

I so hope Dappy doesn't get no.1. It wouldn't be too bad to see a two week chart topper either.

On the subject of Maroon 5, I'm probably as close as you'll find to a Maroon 5 loon (just ask Bre  ) but even though I loved MLJ I didn't think it'd touch top 75 until I saw the itunes thread after its release. I would love it to make no.1 but I just don't see it.

That Jason DeRulo track is so dull. It's OK but I MUCH prefered DWGH actually....

It is SO much better imo. I love it. It's brilliant. But I think it's got too much competiton for next week, and I've heard in on the radio a grand total of once so far. It's got a cover version in the top 300 though, so it's promising. I would be more than happy for it to go #1 tbh.

Sak Noel can't 'do a Barbra Streisand' on the grounds that Barbra Streisand was an unexpected success whereas 'Loca People' is a very obvious hit. I think it has a decent chance of having 'Stereo Love' style longevity (or at least 'We No Speak Americano' style longevity) as well.

Jason Derülo should be top 5 next week, I haven't heard it once and there doesn't seem to be any buzz around it at all but it has had a fake version go top 300 so I suppose there is buzz for it somewhere. Dappy will 100% be the highest new entry though. Hoping James Morrison will go top 10 as well, I still think it's his best single ever.

Barbra Streisand an unexpected sucess? It was charting high on the dance pre-order chart and it got lots of radio 1 support, a lot of it from Chris Moyles when he did his "Duck Register" basically replacing Barbra Streisand with other peoples names. We all knew it would be a hit - it was very unlucky to slip to 3 at the end of the week thanks to Bruno Mars/Matt Cardle
