Ok, I'm not joking. What's wrong with melodies?

Just too many songs in the chart this year that have been focusing solely on the melodies at expense of the instruments, percussion, lyrics, etc. imo.

I was listening to a David Guetta interview on Capital the other day. They played this game with him where they played a note from each of his songs and he had to say which song it was. He got most of them right, to be fair, but they played a note from Gettin' Over You and he said it was Love is Gone, and they played one of the kicks from the beginning of Who's That Chick?, and he said he couldn't tell what song it was, since he said he uses the same kick drum in many of his songs. He was really embarrassed after that. He was all like "Oh, I need to get some sleep".

I'm being dead serious about my first two paragraphs. Honest. Seriously, you might not appreciate it, but Timbaland was a large reason why the charts were so full of urban music a few years ago. His material from the late 90's was more influential on the music scene of the past decade than his music in the 2006/2007 explosion.

I do think the charts have greatly improved in the past few months because of the reduction of the party songs. But I never said anything about the melodic songs really. I'm ALWAYS going on about the percussion (or lack of it )! Which is the key thing, and songs like You Need Me and Don't Go have been great for percussion (and do happen to have very catchy melodies aswell I guess).

I don't think his songs from his previous album were failures at all really, but that's just opinion. I would agree that the song is a parody of 2011 music, more than a parody of Timbaland.

I definitely appreciate what Timbaland did for music in the early 00s, his work with Aaliyah was iconic and had a huge influence on the shape of the genre for the years following.

The singles from his last album were decent enough but I bought the album on the day of release because I loved Shock Value so much and was left bitterly disappointed with it overall. Rehashed beats, some curious/awful choices of guest vocalists and certainly nothing innovative going on there. Luckily he had a couple of decent singles on it and released them both to keep up his hit quota! If Pass At Me is the lead single from a new album then I won't be buying it...

I can see the argument from everyone here, Timbaland hasn't been revolutionary for years (I'd say not since "Get Ur Freak On") but he's still been capable of making a damn good production ("Give It To Me", "Say It Right", "4 Minutes" etc.) when he sets his mind to it. "Morning After Dark", although I like it, was a sign he was starting to become a parody of himself and "Pass At Me" just sounds like a mess. Maybe without Guetta and Pitbull on it it'd sound like a Timbaland-esque mess, but it's not even that in its finished form.

I actually really like 'Pass At Me' now and I have no idea why. I hated it the first time I heard it and I don't understand what's made it grow on me. My music taste is often subject to ridiculously awful songs suddenly growing on me but PAM is taking that TOO FAR. I'm genuinely concerned I may have some sort of mental illness.

Nonetheless.

 34. Stereo Hearts (feat. Adam Levine) - Gym Class Heroes

I do hope this picks up the pace a bit, it's by no means the best thing GCH have ever done but it's certainly very decent and should be higher than 'Moves Like Jagger'.

Matt Cardle still at #11, how long is it going to take him to go top 10? Will he even get there before XF?

Timbaland can still make good music:

I can't deny Timbaland has been hugely influential in his genre and has been responsible for some of the biggest hits of recent years, but his sound is old and dated now and I can't say I'm surprised his new song isn't doing very well
Timbaland is still around?

Yes. And he'll be around for a LONG time, and will go down in history. It annoys me when people think he only existed in 2007 and 2007. Even now, he still makes lots of album tracks for artists. Like he's going to have a song on Drake's new album (the album will be HUGE, surefire #1 in the US with massive sales).

However, it was a little bit depressing when the song he did for Chris Brown's album was the least cherrypicked on release week. Only just managed to break the iTunes top 1000. :nocheer:

Timabaland's current single is doing fine imo, and it doesn't sound dated to me. It sounds too current, if anything. If it sounded like any of his older songs it would be incredible!

I did think Pass At Me would do a bit better but it's not really that surprising that it's flopping. Even though I love it I can see that the song is absolutely appalling. It's just a failed attempt to sound 2011. Timbaland's sound *is* a 2007 sound. Even though it's ridiculously dated now, he could still sell singles perfectly fine with it last year so I think he could still get another big hit if his next single is another clone of 'The Way I Are'. If he comes out with more 'hey look, I've updated my sound!' songs then he'll flop.

When I first heard Morning After Dark, I did think it was a bit of a The Way I Are clone.

I think the song would be doing a bit better if David Guetta was credited. Nonetheless, I'm sure it'll get top 20 eventually.

I just don't know why he's doing songs with David Guetta. Producers work together all the time, but if Timbaland really wants to collaborate with a producer who's very successful at the moment, he should have done so with a producer that's capable of making urban beats (i.e. Stargate, or maybe even Dr. Luke).

And no, melodies aren't a good thing anymore. We've got too much of them in the chart at the moment. We need some songs with good rhythms. Interesting songs. If you want a good melody go and listen to Only Girl and Firework all day.

This has to be one of the most RIDICULOUS statements I've ever read anybody make. Are you seriously implying that for a song to be interesting it has to focus on just ONE aspect of music (the rhythm) and completely dispense with all other things such as TUNE and MELODY? How incredibly narrow-minded.

And on a different note, POOR BRAVE ULTRA NATE. Not even an X-Factor appearance can return her to the top 300 :(

I suspect it's more a case of "I think I know what I am talking about and will include all these technical music terms but really I haven't a CLUE what I mean or what I am saying".

Cardle still at #11? Started off looking promising, can only see it peaking at #4 now, the top 3 are miles away from him, he might close in on 'Jar Of Hearts' after tonight, but I can't see him overtaking.

06. Ed Sheeran - A Team 28.6%

07. Sak Noel - Loca People 27.8%

08. Dappy - No Regrets 25.6%

09. Goo Goo Dolls - Iris 25.5%

10. Jason Derulo - It Girl 23.2%

11. Matt Cardle - Run For Your Life (Should Be around #08 before Xfactor)

Matt Cardle not doing very well, #11 still. Thought iTunes may have frozen :o I'm not even sure X Factor can get this to #1, the song is so weak. WFL for #1!
TBF Matt hasn't exactly had the support Bleeding Love and Bad Boys got. Oh well, I guess next week this place will be full of 'LOL at Matt's flop' and 'Cher was the true XF winner!'
