October 8, 201113 yr I get your point, but if they're going to shun Moves Like Jagger because 'it doesn't need to be on the playlist to do well' then why playlist Cher Lloyd, One Direction, Dappy, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc? They clearly don't need the support, if anything Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera initially needed the support a lot more than those acts, although they hardly need it now. I'm just playing Devil's advocate here just in case someone bites my head off. Both Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's most recent eras in the UK were fairly hefty failures, were they played by Radio 1 or not last year? I don't know. But whether they were or they weren't, the BBC as an organisation had obviously moved them to become 'Radio 2 acts', those that now only have limited appeal to the youth and are now far more appealing to the adult market. There are very few songs that get playlisted by both stations so for Radio 1 to have playlisted it as well as Radio 2, for two acts who were before MLJ way below their peak, is not in the least bit surprising. By the time it became a big hit having stayed in the top 3 for 3 weeks or so it was already right near the top of both TV and Airplay charts here, so then it did simply not need their support, it already had more than enough exposure. No established act NEEDS Radio 1 exposure per se, because others will play them, but it would be wrong for them to view every act like that. Also, you need to take the BBC as a whole. Moves Like Jagger has had as much exposure on BBC radio over the past three months than most other songs, just not on one of their stations.

October 8, 201113 yr strangest thing as its TOTALLY the kind of song US radio would usually never play and Europe/ UK would - yet theyre playing the hell out of it
October 8, 201113 yr I don't really mean embarrass, it's just cause I get so annoyed when they don't play songs that are good cause they don't think "they'll be hits" when half the songs the playlist are flops noone ever buys (heavy metal stuff) and when they snub a good new song because it's either not rap, dance, dubstep or heavy metal and it becomes a hit it prooves they get it wrong a lot and SHOULD LISTEN TO WHAT WE WANT TO BE PLAYLISTED!!! Sorry to go back about a page in the thread but I've only just seen this. What "heavy metal stuff" do Radio 1 playlist? The only band who fit that description (off the top of my head at least) are Bullet For My Valentine, and Radio 1's influence has seen them score two top 5 albums in succession. The singles chart isn't the only measure of success, I'd say the majority of what people here say "they always play this lot and it never gets them a hit" about are rock bands whose main trade is albums and they sell quite a few of them. How many properly big hits have been ignored by R1 completely in the last year? Not an awful lot, and certainly a fairly small minority. The majority of the time Radio 1 manages to playlist big hits before they become so, and most of the ones they snub they have a damn good reason to do so.

Letlive a post-hardcore band are currently on the INMWT list but essentially I concur with your sentiments...
October 8, 201113 yr It's not Radio 1 as a whole that's 'demeaning it', it's just Chris Moyles who is a complete twat and this is nothing out of the ordinary for him (I do like his show, but he is a twat). One DJ on a radio station does not represent the whole station, even if he is the most well-known DJ. sorry but what did he actually say?? and they dont ignore it on the chart show or the chart update its played....greg james even said this has been the most consistent seller of the past 2 months when introducing it.... also some songs get ignored but they play them with spot plays....ive noticed this alot for wynter gordon dirty talk,it gets played once or twice aweek!!

True. I wouldn't be surprised if they've played Moves Like Jagger outside of chart-related shows aswell.
October 8, 201113 yr True. I wouldn't be surprised if they've played Moves Like Jagger outside of chart-related shows aswell. Well, last week we had the official figure of 9 in the first 7 weeks of release so it can't have been played that often.
October 8, 201113 yr Well, last week we had the official figure of 9 in the first 7 weeks of release so it can't have been played that often. True. But still, it's not like it's not been played at all. I heard Beautiful Liar by Shakira on there the other day aswell.
October 8, 201113 yr I can see clearly why you're disillusioned with Radio 1, I do find it a bit rich though when people say "oh R1 never play Artist A but always back Artist C, even though they're shit" when they're the SAME BLOODY GENRE. Some people really don't understand that other people can have a music taste that is at odds with theirs. Radio1 has this great diversity but it so rarely includes stuff from Scandinavia which frustrates me. I know that I have a less common music taste when it comes to the UK, but it will forever remain uncommon if it doesn't get the outlet it deserves. My only criticism of Radio1 right now is it's lack of Scandinavians. They really don't have the demand to cater to me, which is a shame but it's the reason I don't listen to Radio anymore. I am the one with the odd music taste and I'm accepting that is the way it's going to be as R1 will not change everything to please the 7 people in this country who like Tone Damli, Eric Saade, Mans Zelmerlow, September, Agnes etc. (Although if they don't playlist Agnes' new track I will cut them, it deserves to be every bit as big as Release Me if not bigger)
October 8, 201113 yr yeah 9 times sounds right once twice in its week of release(chart update/chart show) and once every other week in the chart.....the question is will it be played once or twice this week?????????
October 9, 201113 yr Both weren't. Odd, since to me "Misery" sounds more like an obvious hit single than "Makes Me Wonder" which made #2.

October 9, 201113 yr and they dont ignore it on the chart show or the chart update its played....greg james even said this has been the most consistent seller of the past 2 months when introducing it.... Greg played a bit of it on his own show when he played back a recording of a telephone conversation between him and one of his friends. His friend had been working on dance moves for it for their impending holiday, and Greg described it as "their song", so obviously he's a fan. It is popular with a Radio 2 audience, but it's apparent it's popular with a lot of teenagers and people in their twenties too. Radio 1 misjudged its appeal, and all the guff about them not needing support or being played on Radio 2 or Heart doesn't alter the fact they got it wrong. They've have been all over it like a rash if they thought it would be a big seller. also some songs get ignored but they play them with spot plays....ive noticed this alot for wynter gordon dirty talk,it gets played once or twice aweek!! This is what I think Radio 1 should be doing with songs that have fallen through the official playlist gap. Clearly not everything can get on, and never mind whether or not the acts need the airplay, their listeners should reasonably expect to get to hear the year's biggests sellers from time to time, and not just during the chart show. As it happens, Edith Bowman played it this morning. I've no idea how she introduced it as I wasn't paying attention, but it seems as if common sense is prevailing. Either that or they are terrified it really will make number one and be the year's biggest seller without getting played on their station except when forced to do so.
October 9, 201113 yr I just listened back and she introduced it like any other song and was even humming the tune at the end and praising the artists. What I was annoyed at is the the website says she played Maroon 5-Sunday Morning at the beginning of the show when she didn't, it was just part of a montage of clips about it being Sunday morning. Yet another great song people forget about though.
October 10, 201113 yr The reason that Maroon 5 haven't got enough sales condensed into one chart week (yet) to be #1 is just that its airplay has taken time to build up. Nothing to do with Radio 1's snub of it (although I suppose that could be taking sales away from it anyway, so maybe it could have got to #1 with Radio 1 support, but there's no way to prove that unless someone develops a way to look into alternate universes )
October 10, 201113 yr I'm GUTTED that commercial pop stations never play St. Vincent's Cruel. It'd be top ten if they (or anyone) supported it. Edited October 10, 201113 yr by SKOB
October 10, 201113 yr I'm GUTTED that commercial pop stations never play St. Vincent's Cruel. It'd be top ten if they (or anyone) supported it. I'd normally be thinking 'who or what?' but I coincidentally heard this last night on Radio 1. On BBC Introducing after midnight, granted, but they have played it at least once  It sounded okay but as I was in an advanced state of tired at the time I wasn't really paying attention to it.
