It probably bothers them more because they don't like it than because they're embarrassed that R1 didn't playlist it though. If I were a radio DJ I'd be extremely reluctant to play Moves Like Jagger. I'd try not to openly slag it off but I wouldn't exactly give it a massively enthusiastic introduction.

I did say at the beginning of my post that I don't think they're embarrassed. Frustrated definitely (and not even all of them).

I personally don't see why they don't playlist it because it's a great song. They obviously don't agree and that's cool but I do suspect many 'non chart freaks' wonder why they don't hear it on Radio 1. It's been in the top 3 for 2 months, so some of their target audience must like it.

Now this is actually a valid criticism of Radio 1's playlist - it is a bit stupid that they'll supposedly never playlist anything by Alexandra Burke or Enrique Iglesias etc. presumably even if they change their style of music drastically and make it sound identical to some of the artists they do love. This needs to be changed and they should base their playlist choices based on the song for everyone without just excluding certain artists.

Although I do think they may eventually take some of these artists at least temporarily off their blacklist anyway. They supported 'She Wolf' quite heavily completely out of the blue (before going straight back to ignoring Shakira afterwards). Maybe the same could happen with an Alexandra/Enrique song in the future.

I wouldn't say that was "out of the blue", although there was the 'Hips Don't Lie'-gate, the follow-up single etc were playlisted as a result (this could also mean Maroon 5's next single could get playlisted by the same logic).

They're 'fu**ing idiots' for not agreeing with you on a completely subjective matter? Well I never. :o

And they fundamentally do not play Britney, so nice job on that.

No they are idiots for refusing to play the likes of Alexandra and Enrique because of their "cookie cutter" pop songs yet still play JLS and Britney (I'm sure they playlisted HIAM and TTWE - maybe not the latter).

And I think the Christina Aguilera snub is quite harsh when the music she released in 2010 wasn't exactly nun-inspired classical pieces and was instead very similar to the popular sound around that time.

People from Radio 1 last year actually made a "statement" saying they won't playlist certain artists, specifically mentioning Enrique and Alexandra (there's a thread about it on here somewhere, I remember it was the same week that they playlisted Poison by Nicole Scherzinger).

So it's not just an assumption people are making, it's been "confirmed" from people who work there. You're correct though, they could change their minds and "un-blacklist" them one day.

Do Alexandra and Enrique actually NEED to be playlisted though? It's a poor excuse admittedly, but Radio 1 not playing them doesn't stop them doing well.

I like to think it's because 'She Wolf' was just a genius pop moment.

That's true. All Night Long got to #1 on the radio airplay chart without being playlisted by Radio 1, so that song didn't really need the help. Of course, more airplay would've been nice, but geting to #1 on the airplay chart is surely "good enough" for any song, really.

Alexandra and Enrique are just two artists though, there are loads of other people out there who are 'blacklisted' and aren't as lucky as they are to have pretty much blanket support from everywhere else.

It's because Radio 1 is trying to attract a younger and younger audience. They're aiming mainly at the 12-18 demographic.

I think their "policy" is rubbish, anything that is in the Top 20 at least should be on their playlist. It's supposed to be the main pop music station on the BBC after all.

I just find it confusing how Jennifer Lopez gets playlisted and someone like Enrique doesn't. J.Lo's music is just as generic and she's older.

If Radio 1 had playlisted Britney this era, she wouldn't be doing as bad as she is.

Look at her peaks for "Circus" in comparison. They even playlisted "Radar" for goodness sake.

I can't see Papi getting playlisted tbh now.

I think that's okay though. It's a similar situation to Nicole's Wet. Those songs both actually are "cookie-cutter" pop, and will get lots of support from Capital, etc. As long as Radio 1 are open to playlisting any future singles, I'm fine with that.

Radio 1's playlisting is most odd. Until Freedom (which was canned anyway) they've always always playlisted the Sugababes, hell it's the reason No Can Do made the top 40.

They snub my favourite genre a good 99.9999% of the time and I can't honestly remember the last time I listened to Radio 1. For me, they are irrelevant and I am part of the targeted audience. I know that they are never going to have a playlist that resembles my music taste, so I don't listen to radio. While it frustrates me that they won't play any Scandipop (even the really HQ stuff that given half a chance would explode in this country) I'm beginning not to care at all. They will always have their prejudices and that isn't something moaning on here won't change (Believe me, I've tried.)

I can see clearly why you're disillusioned with Radio 1, I do find it a bit rich though when people say "oh R1 never play Artist A but always back Artist C, even though they're shit" when they're the SAME BLOODY GENRE. Some people really don't understand that other people can have a music taste that is at odds with theirs.

What I don't get is why people think the target audience is 12-18 when the majority of that audience is at school during the day and can't listen. It's certainly what they're going for with the chart show but I don't think Radio 1 are trying to cater to that audience with every show.

I love the way people slag off Radio 1 and forget that If it wasn't for them Maroon 5 wouldn't have had hits back in 2004. I'm a bit gutted they didn't playlist MLJ, but on the other hand I'm glad their introducing us to new bands and artists such as Twin Atlantic, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinasours, Nero, to name a few.

You all seem to forget that it's thanks to Radio 1 we the likes of Example, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Calvin Harris, Marina and The Diamonds, Florence and The Machine are successful. If it was down to Capital to break new music we'd be stuck with X Factor artists and The Wanted. There's only a certain amount of songs that can be on the playlist and it can be very hard choosing what makes the final list, and what doesn't and sometimes they have to make some tough decisions and stick by them.

the target audience isn't 12-18 anyway, they've said themselves that their listening audience is aimed at 15-29 year olds primarily, but there really isn't a strict boundary

Their core isn't 12-18 at all, anyone thinking that is wrong.

The remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. It should reflect the lives and interests of 15–29 year olds but also embrace others who share similar tastes.
As a comparison; Radio 2

The remit of Radio 2 is to be a distinctive, mixed music and speech service, targeted at a broad audience, appealing to all age groups over 35.

It's fair to say the typical tastes of a 15 year old are likely to be significantly different from those approaching 30. That's why although a lot of people hate stuff like boybands and Cher Lloyd, they also have huge appeal to one end of their main target audience. For all of Radio 1's criticisms, of which there are many and some are valid, their playlist is more varied than any other, catering for far more tastes than any other UK radio station does, its daytime playlist backs home grown talent more than commercial radio does, as well as allows more new acts from less chart friendly genres on there.

I saw someone say the other day the reason that commercial radio doesn't back new music in any great quantity is because Radio 1 have taken that and stopped them. This may be the case, but it's a pathetic excuse. Why have they let themselves be dictated by Radio 1? Why couldn't they have played The A Team BEFORE it went top 10? It'll be the same with Lana Del Rey. At the moment she's mainly getting play from 4 stations. Radio 1, 6 Music, XFM and NME. Wait a fortnight until it charts inside the top 10 before mainstream commercial radio are all over it. The excuse that they can't play new artists because Radio 1 does is a laughable excuse. Looking at Capital's playlist, they have one act on there that's never had a hit before, Wolgang Gartner, and the single they've playlisted features Will.I.Am, as well as One Direction who's debut single they're playlisting, but they don't really count as a 'new' act like you'd traditionally consider. Compare that to Radio 1 who's playlist who without checking all of them have somewhere between 10 and 15 songs by acts who've never had a hit before. What stops them from playlisting any of those, or even something that Radio 1 haven't like they did with the horrendous Cover Drive? Nothing. Yes, they're a chart station but they've made it so as far as radio goes, they have to rely on others so make music chart music.

They DO have an irrational hatred for Alexandra though, someone sent them a email on DS (a Burke loon) and they replied saying Alexandra didn't fit in with their audience. Which is BS seeing as they playlist artists like Rihanna who in the same vein as Alexandra.
