'Starships' is incredibly generic - in a bad way. Nicki had an edge, like Jessie J, but both have gone down the generic electro-pop route just to score a cheap hit. 'Super Bass' remains Nicki's best single so far - with 'Moment 4 Life' second.

I agree. They don't stand out from anyone with their latest singles. It's a shame. :(

'Rack City' is doing amazingly well! I hope it can eventually go top 40 alongside Niggas In Paris. The Motto won't go near the top 40 because it's just going to vanish again the second it's put back to 99p.

Someone said Rack City is also 59p. So that'll probably free-fall when it's put back up aswell. :( Hopefully it gets kept 59p for like a whole month like Paradise was.

Well that person clearly didn't check their facts, because it isn't 59p :P Neither is Niggas In Paris.

I'm speechless. I just can't believe it's doing so well. Just wow.

I think 'Get Sexy' by the Sugababes did this.

Didn't All Fired Up do that too?

Have a horrible feeling these great tunes will finally break in to the top 40 next werk only to be knocked out again a load of old Adele and Ed Sheeran singles after the Brits

AFU was at #1 for about an hour before Pixie knocked it off.

I remember Rochelle opened the champaign when it went to #1!

I'm surprised she had time to open it before it went down again, it was literally knocked off more or less right away

A bittle split 5 ways - so not even a glass each... so they coul've done that in the 10 minutes it was number 1 for :D

SMH... -_-

not all 'generic' electro-pop is bad. for me, if a song has a strong hook, vocal or production, then it works. if any of the three are off, then it does not. for example, 'domino' is fine and 'starships' uses those three things very well. I don't care if they sound like other songs, as long as they aren't direct copies, for example 'sexy bitch'/'where them girls at' and 'california gurls'/'dynamite'.

however, songs like 'who's laughing now' and 'roman's revenge' are just horrible. they may not be generic, but they're messy.

Starships is basically a copy of every big hit of the last year though. It might not directly rip off one song in particular but I'd say this way is even more crass. I don't really get the Cali Gurls/Dynamite comparison but I avoided the latter as much as possible. Either way surely Cali Gurls and Tik Tok are a far better comparison?

The worst thing is that neither of those artists need to be selling cheap rip-offs. Jessie J got a huge hit with one of the most unique songs to chart in ages and Nicki got a hit due to just having an excellent pop song. Why does Jessie need to rip off Katy Perry and why does Nicki need to be making messes like Starships? It's so uninspired and lazy.

Reading online, like on forums, etc. about Starships, I've heard some people saying it sounds like California Gurls, others saying Changed the Way You Kiss Me, others saying Domino, others saying Dynamite, others saying Till the World Ends.

It's just ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with that type of music, but it's all been done already. I don't see the point of all these artists releasing the same songs again and again. So much now is just Tik Tok and Sexy Chick remakes imo.

I don't think Who's Laughing Now? or Roman's Revenge are "horrible" in the slightest. Sure, there's a lot going on in those songs compared to basic preset songs like Domino and Turn Me On, but they don't sound messy to me, they sound great.

But anyway, I have hope for Nicki's features I guess.

Go on Youtube. There's literally HUNDREDS of California Gurls/Dynamite mash-ups. So many people have noticed they sound exactly the same. But here's one of them:

Lil Wayne/ Bruno  14 Could this possibly get into the Top10?

67. deadmau5/ Maths (Original Mix). Is this another On Air/On Sale song?

Off topic but don't know where to post this (sorry). Basically my iTunes keeps playing the wrong songs in the "last played" column. For example whenever I sync my iPod it'll say I recently listened to 'Good Feeling' by Flo Rida for example, when in actual fact I played 'Wild Ones'. It's done that quite alot. It'll get the artist correct but completely list a different song to what I recently played. It's starting to bug me (I have OCD lol).

deadmau5 only releases music on an OA/OS basis, although he usually does so with little fanfare before radio is aware.

There's little fanfare compared to artists like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry because they have much larger fanbases than him.

I hope it does. I can't see it happening though (and it's dropped to #15). It would be great if it became a big hit, as maybe Lil Wayne could be more successful with his singles in the future, as he has lots of good songs with flop undeservedly imo, since UK radio don't touch that type of thing. I can't believe it's even doing it this well. When it was released last year, it just went top 200 iirc and then fell, and now all these months later it's climbed into the top 20.

Not so - he does have a sizable fanbase (he can draw thousands to see him live - has a few festival headliners lined up). He just doesn't churn out top 40 friendly music on the regular basis (with I Remember and Ghosts n Stuff being the only two notable exceptions, which both went top 20).

Clearly he has a sizable fanbase, since he's shot straight into the top 100 with no promotion! He's doing roughly as well as Nicki Minaj's on air, on sale promo singles did.

But I don't think deadmau5 is as big as Gaga and Katy Perry, even if he sells more live tickets than they do.

Gotye back at #1!!!!! :cheer: It's so great to see a song like this do so well at the moment.

Every single point you made in this post, I agree with!

I hope Bruno Mars has a new album ready for later this year (I doubt it though). I miss his music in the chart. :(

Gotye at no1 is right.....strange wonder if Dj Fresh has drastically reduced in sales or if the others have caught up - guess thats just typical behaviour of a held back release - hope it doesnt fall too fast!
