Posted February 23, 201213 yr How do we all pronounce our own/other people's contries. (particularly the odd ones. :o) Juranabaijan = Jer-ann-ah-bye-jahn. Séyetana = Say-eh-tar-nar. Fljótavík = Fl-oh-tah-vik. Caerfyrddia = Care-fer-did-ee-ah. I'm probably terrible with my pronunciantions. :(
February 23, 201213 yr I've always thought of Fljótavík as Fyoh-ta-vik, the first syllable rhyming with the sound of 'do' in dog, otherwise I'd agree with your pronunciations of the others. For the record FSR Rontvia is F-S-R-Ront-vee-uh
February 23, 201213 yr Kluminican Republic is exactly how it sounds! Cluh-min-ih-can Re-pub-lick? I've never tried pronouncing Fljotavik's name though, way too hard! :(
February 23, 201213 yr Author I've always thought of Fljótavík as Fyoh-ta-vik, the first syllable rhyming with the sound of 'do' in dog, otherwise I'd agree with your pronunciations of the others. For the record FSR Rontvia is F-S-R-Ront-vee-uh I guess that looks more like it sounds, I'm just silentising the 'j' instead of the 'l' that you silentise! Dandy, confirmation plz? :D
February 23, 201213 yr Caerfyrddia = Kai-ver-vee-uh :D Definitely would have never got that. A year living in Wales and I picked up NOTHING! :drama: Also thought that Allecian was Ah-lee-shun :o
February 23, 201213 yr Batidas is pronounced ba-tee-das (I know, shocking!!! ) As for Fljótavík, I pronounce it was flo-ta-vik (flo sounding like "for"). Caerfyrddia I always thought was pronounced as "car-frid-ee-ya" :o
February 23, 201213 yr Author Caerfyrddia = Kai-ver-vee-uh :D Woah. No 'd''s in the pronuncianton despite there being two. Allecian's quite easy to pronounce :D Ah-liss-ey-an Similar to Rich, I thought this was Ah-leesh-ee-an. :o
February 23, 201213 yr Also thought that Allecian was Ah-lee-shun :o  I'm only just seeing that now, it's more of an 'Alice' sounding pronunciation rather than an 'Alesha' one!
February 23, 201213 yr Definitely would have never got that. A year living in Wales and I picked up NOTHING! :drama: Not even "bore da"? :kink: To be fair, you were living in probably one of the most prominent English speaking areas of Wales. It only tends to be in the North West and South West where you'll hear welsh being spoken on a very regular basis. Woah. No 'd''s in the pronuncianton despite there being two. A double 'd' in Welsh gives a 'v' sound, as there's no 'v' in the Welsh alphabet. We're a bit odd like that :kink:
February 23, 201213 yr In case anyone is CONFUSED (they aren't) mine is pronounced: F - Y - R - Vodge - Vo - Dee - Nah (vodge pronounced the same as dodge) I'd never have guessed Caerfyrddia was pronounced like that! To be honest I prefer how I said it anyway: Care - fir - dee - uh.
February 23, 201213 yr Obviously Ashton is pronounced: Ash-ton. The Ashtonise 'Áskorza' is pronounced: Ih-ss Korr-tsah (The R is rolled like in Norsk and the z is pronounced like the ts in tsar) Not even "bore da"? :kink: To be fair, you were living in probably one of the most prominent English speaking areas of Wales. It only tends to be in the North West and South West where you'll hear welsh being spoken on a very regular basis. A double 'd' in Welsh gives a 'v' sound, as there's no 'v' in the Welsh alphabet. We're a bit odd like that :kink: Just a bit? :P
February 24, 201213 yr Unovia = Oo-no-vee-uh Not the hardest of names to figure out how to say, but still :P
February 24, 201213 yr Mine is as easy as it sounds: Daehun = Day-e-hee-yoon That's very different from how I thought it was pronounced (how do you get 'hee-yoon' out of 'hun'?) I've always pronounced it in my head as 'die-hoon'. Persephonia is pronounced per-SEF-o-nee-a.
