To be honest, 'We Are Young' isn't exactly an instant song. When I first heard it, I sort of liked it but nothing more than that. It's one of those that when I hear them more, they slowly start to niggle at the brain and eventually I start to like the song much more. 'Somebody That I Used To Know' had the exact same initial impact on me. Some songs just require a few listens before they click - they, imo, have ended up being some of the best songs I've listened to. :D

Agreed - it's like a mini STIUTK for me. Except at first with STIUTK I had absolutely no desire to ever hear it again, whereas WAY was just 'alright' (I much prefered the Glee version, which I've now gone off and find it as one of their most overrated covers). Of course now I really like WAY, but it's not to the same scale as STIUTK - which if I'm not being hasty here is honestly already one of my favourite songs of all time, I just absolutely adore it

We Are Young took a while to grow on me aswell. The chorus is really my favourite part. I never could work out where Janelle was actually in the song until I saw the music video.

I agree that it's not similar to Ke$ha or Pitbull. Songs like We Are Young are rarely seen in the UK chart now, so I think it's very unique in that sense. Although I really have a feeling this type of music will get more commonplace in the chart from now on. The club bangers really seem to be fizzling out slowly. Oh dear, what's Taio Cruz going to do now?

The chorus just sounds very mid 80s to me. I'm racking my brains to remember what song in particular it reminds me of....

Fun - We are young is now the 4th best selling song on itunes uk. Usher is next on the hitlist.

fun. did grow on me surprisingly quickly, even if the chorus isn't the most instant, the 'na na na's are SO infectious, I guess I'm just a sucker for anything which remotely uses guitars :kink: Gotye was the complete opposite, I didn't get it for ages but I really like it now
It may have similar lyrical themes but it's COMPLETELY different musically.

I didn't say it was similar. I said it's no better.

Not really my kinda music, obviously. ;)

I have to agree with Eric, it seems like that club bangers are going out of fashion, I guess LMFAO's popularity was the last nail in its coffin. :P

But who knows? Maybe when Kesha comes back it will start all over again? It kind started with Gaga and her anyway. God knows I love that trashy bitch, but I hope not. :D

I must be alone in thinking 'We Are Young' was very instant then (the chorus at least)!

I agree with Eric that it's hard to pick out where Janelle's part is without the video - before I saw the video I was almost convinced she wasn't really on it at all. Her part is pointless and adds nothing though.

It just struck me when listening to the chart show every week recently, there's really not that much of it compared to before.

And most of the artists that do do it, they're urban anyway, they can easily go back to non-electropop music when they want/need to. It would be nice if in a few years it's not very popular anymore. I think 2006-2012+, it's been enough now to be honest. It wasn't so bad at first, but last year was just really a joke. Maybe how over the top it got was a part of the reason Adele blew up like she did, she was just SO different to everything else at that point.

We Are Young was very instant for me. I saw it doing brilliantly on US iTunes, listened to it once and fell in love with it. STIYTK took a good few listens to really grow on me.

WAY  #4

Mercy  #57

And it happens all the time too. Who remembers the "death to disco" movement in the 80s during the big disco era? It's not as extreme, but maybe because there is no real alternative right now. In this world of instant gratification and very short attention span, most people would rather listen to brainless club songs, than search for subtleties and meanings in songs that are harder to digest. No wonder people rather buy singles than albums too.

Whatever, off topic.

Blue Jeans is closing in on the top 50. It really should be the highest charting of Lana's songs, it's clearly the best.

Just listened to "Level Up" and... wow. What a piece of shit song :D Go away please!

P.S. WAY was also very instant for me (wish Janelle was in it more though!)

I've been noticing the numbers dwindling recently too, and there's more variety. I mean a year ago I'd have laughed if you'd said alternative pop like Gotye or pure breezy pop like Carly Rae Jepsen could get to number 1!

Was saying the exact same thing earlier today, I really do not understand why she is in it.

We Are Young should definitely be #1 over Call Me Maybe..hopefully it'll get there, big climb to get there.

Yeah. Or even Boyfriend, We Are Young, Climax, etc. This time last year I never would've imagined Justin Bieber and Usher would release songs like that to lead their album campaigns. Maybe the record labels are noticing the trend in the public's buying habits too.

David Guetta's the main anomaly here though. He's doing incredibly well at the moment. Probably the biggest he's been since summer 2009 when Sexy Chick and I Gotta Feeling were dominating.

While we're on David Guetta, he's apparently made a final decision for the next song he'll promote, and he's going with I Can Only Imagine:

I agree, most pointless featuring ever. Amazing song though, really hope it can get to #1.

Coldplay - Charlie Brown at #42 and it's 59p... I reckon it's going to plummet when it's put back to 99p :(

 56. Glee Cast - Somebody That I Used To Know

35. Too Close - Alex Clare

OH MY GOD YES :cheer:

Can't believe Alex Clare might actually get a Top 40 hit! (now all we need is James Blake's cover of "A Case of You" to be featured on some random advert in the near future :D)

It's a shame Alex Clare charting is as a result of being associated with such an awful 'product'.
How come Blue Jeans has had such a big boost, and Born To Die and Video Games back in the top 80? :yahoo:

I wondered this aswell. I thought Blue Jeans was going to flop real bad, because it wasn't even in the top 100 at the start of the week on iTunes.

I happened to hear the song for the first time today. I like it on first listen, but not as much as Video Games and Born To Die. I think Born To Die is my favourite of the three.
