To be fair though, the UK has always had the most Xenophobic music industry in the world.

3rd most xenophobic maybe but the UK doesn't come close to the USA or Japan in that regard. Gangnam Style will eventually be as big here as it is everywhere else I now think. It'll just take its time. The UK are often a bit late to worldwide hits.

Really? Latin music is hugely popular in the US. I suppose that it's their culture in a way but I don' think you can call the US charts as monocultural as ours are. As for Japan, Korean and Chinese artists have made big inroads in the Japanese chart lately, and I think that Western pop is coming back into fashion too. I just really hope that Gangnam Style doesn't go low-top-30 like every other foreign language worldwide hit (even bloody Waka Waka). I'd actually prefer for it not to make the top 40 than do that.

Gangnam Style will be f***ing massive over here. A one hit wonder for K-Pop but just wait till a celebrity finds the song and does the dance. I can imagine it being played in clubs right now and people going mental for it just like with Party Rock Anthem.

Sorry to burst people's bubbles but I doubt this campaign to get YNWA to #1 will go away. Today quite a few football clubs are signing the song at 3.06pm, so likelihood there'll be more exposure on the news tonight and plus Match of the Day over the weekend. Just look at past history to say Liverpool fans do not give up! And plus it is for a fantastic cause.

I think it is such a beautiful song. Such a powerful meaning. People should listen to the lyrics.

Incredible that the whole football society is rallying around to support this. It's a shame that it could potentially block Dappy or Example off #1 as i love both their songs.

WHY did Dappy change his release date?

Clearly untrue as the US do gobble up like Tom said Latin Music and even Country whereas the UK practically don't even touch them genres at all.

The US is a much bigger country that ours though, and full of millions of migrants. The UK knows what we like, but the reason the US like Latin music etc. so much is probably because they have so many Cuban, Spanish, South American etc. nationalities living over there. The UK doesn't have that large volume of migrants that the USA has.

Dappy could potentially miss out on #1 because of "You'll Never Walk Alone"?

Haha. Brilliant! :D

Quite. Dappy shouldn't ever be near number 1 tbh. Id prefer Example to get number 1.,

Rooney enjoy You'll Never Walk Alone being number one, it's the only thing this season that something with connotations of Liverpool will be number one!

In all serious though, I hope it builds up a much bigger lead today, would be great to see this be number one next week!

Will be very interesting to see where YNWA chartd this week, it could have already done enough for top 10 I reckon!

Top 20 maybe.

Checking back, it usually makes a couple of appearances in the iTunes T1000 each month, which suggests to me trickle-sales of 200-300/wk.

Dappy won't be going to #1 anyway if he's releasing tomorrow. Example 'Say Nothing' is one of the most obvious #1s of the year, I'll be very surprised if YNWA actually does make #1. It should easily be top 40 this week followed by top 5 next week if they keep the campaign going.

Very true. They have a large latin population if that's what you want to call it, so it isn't surprising the genre is popular there. Country music on the other hand originated in the US, so it isn't surprising to see it having a large audience in the US. In regards to Japan having Korean/Chinese singers doing well, yes that's true but they are releasing Japanese language singles to do well.

Well, that's a very nice surprise there, I certainly hope Gerry can stay at number 1, it's a good sight better than most of the top 10

A few pages late, but I really hate when its labelled 'sheepish' when people do this. Yes, they could support the charity separately, but it's a really nice way of raising awareness and as a tribute. It fits very well in the light of recent news, in which justice has almost been found for the victims' families.

Can't Dappy and Example just blow up...literally! They've got to be two of the most over-hyped, overrated, unlikeable, pretentious artists of recent years.

Example is always slagging off pop artists and turning his nose up at them when his music is hardly respectable and meaningful. The fact that he's always guaranteed a number one with his solo stuff these days is really bugging me. Can't people buy something that isn't a carbon copy of previous singles?!

The nationality breakdown of the UK top 100 now looks a lot more diverse than that of the Billboard Hot 100 to me.

USA

79 USA

11 UK

2 Canada

2 France

2 Trinidad & Tobago

1 Australia

1 Barbados

1 Iceland

1 South Korea

UK

47 UK

33 USA

5 Sweden

3 Barbados

3 Canada

2 Australia

2 Ireland

2 Trinidad & Tobago

1 France

1 Iceland

1 South Korea

And the current Hot 100 is probably one of their more 'multicultural' charts. Nicki Minaj and Rihanna might as well be Americans as well (and all of the non-USA/UK entries in the USA chart (Bieber, Carly, Guetta x2, Nicki x2, Gotye, Rihanna, Of Monsters And Men, PSY) have also been in the UK chart).

You might have a point about the UK being less 'tolerant' of different genres (although Latin and especially country music are very much part of American culture - is country music actually big anywhere outside of the USA?) but 'xenophobic' isn't exactly the right word for that.

I might just be being forgetful but 'Danza Kuduro' is the only foreign-language 'Latin' song (apart from the Spanish versions of Shakira songs I suppose) that I can remember even making the Hot 100 recently? And that did a lot better in the UK.

they should have chosen Melanie C's new version of 'You'll never walk alone' to be the charity single... at least it would have given her a 3rd number 1....

^ Country music is big(ish) in AUstralia, but nowhere near as much as America.

Also Michel Telo made the Hot 100! But I do agree the US is probably just as xenophobic as the UK when it comes to foreign languages especially.

Oooh, I woke up this morning to see this new number 1 ! Could someone update me quickly about what this campaign is about?

The song is very beautiful anyway
