Not really. The UK charts work completely differently to everywhere else in the world. We've always known this...

No they don't.

A lot of countries I think just use an airplay chart for their chart, so we work differently to them. I think there's also a European country that has a streaming chart as its official chart.

Also, France until recently only counted physical sales for its chart. And let's not get started on the Hot 100.

I think Jonjo meant in that most countries have virtually everything released OA/OS, whereas we have most things held back. So we do definitely work differently in that respect, but also as Eric said there are so many weird components and rules for other charts whereas we are just sales.
I don't know why we're the dumbass country they can't accept OA/OS. So irritating when most tracks are held back for about 2 months. If that was the same in every country I wouldn't care but it's not.

Y Muse is so high? I LOVE that!

And M&S are number 8 combined! maybe to 10 this week???

I like tracks being held back at least for a little bit but two months is absolutely ridiculous. I'd say hold it back for about a week or so, depending on the artist really. Rihanna could probably just release now and easily get a top ten placing on Sunday, whereas other artists will need the exposure. But when other countries get it straight away and we have to wait...
Looks like Turn Around will be the only new entry in the top 20. What's the latest on the new entries this week (And any Andy Williams songs if they have made the top 200)

Not entirely true. The UK is far less willing to accept OA/OS than most countries but held back releases still happen in other places. Mostly for local artists admittedly, but it happens.

Regrading Andy Williams songs:

135 Moon River

145 Can't Take My Eyes Off You

325 Music to Watch Girls By

375 Can't Get Used to Losing You

It already climbed to #18 on Sunday. Guessing you meant top 10, as DJ Fresh's 'The Feeling' also looks set to debut at #11/12 - though I can't see it reaching the top 10.

Rather disappointing tbh, I expected DJ Fresh to be Top 5 at least.

I'm loving Muse climbing. I wish it would do a Coldplay's Paradise, climb Top 10 and eventually go to Number 1. It would have to be 59p for the next few months for that to happen. I can't see it happening, but it would be so amazing :w00t:

You're right there. In the US, some songs get held back in a way because they leak early, and radio stations start playing them, but the record labels decide to still stay with their original release date. This is sort of what happened with One Direction's new song. Also famously happened in the US with What's My Name?, meaning it had 2 weeks of airplay before it was released due to it leaking early.

But in other cases, if the song leaks early, the record label might just release the song asap. This happened with Born This Way, and is why it was released at such an awkward time.

A current example in the US is the latest Enrique song, held back for a month or so and already had 35m in airplay before release this week. Seems to have worked with it now being top 10 on iTunes. But if Taylor Swift can make [almost] OA/OS work for her in the UK without a massive fanbase over here (granted, WANEGBT had lots of buzz) then Rihanna should just go for it.

Did Born This Way leak early, I don't remember that? I thought it was scheduled to be released on the Friday that it was actually released.

Yeah Born This Way just premiered and then got released literally right away. I can see them releasing Diamonds in the next few weeks once they realise their mistake anyway and as it's after 1D get a week it should definitely be a #1.

I think it was supposed to be released at the beginning of the US digital chart week (which I think is a Monday or something). But since it leaked on the Internet, they rush-released it mid-week.

Her album also leaked early, but in that case it was only by a matter of hours, rather than a matter of days.

Another song in the US that is currently being held back, but getting radio airplay, is the new Aaliyah/Drake song. I think the reason for this is because there's some controversy over its release or something like that.

EDIT: Just checked about Born This Way, the song was originally supposed to be premiered on February 13th at the Grammy Awards, and released immediately after. Instead its premiere and release both got pulled forward to February 11th.

Born This Way was scheduled to be released on the Friday though. It was scheduled that way for quite a while as I remember the monsters going mad about her not getting a full week of sales in the US.

I don't get why everyone thinks Diamonds will be held back. We should wait till Sunday to see if Def Jam simply waited for the new tracking week to release it and if it is not released, then mass tweet Rihanna to release it over here. :P

The mass tweeting seemed to work to get them to release Hold It Against Me early, so you never know.

If Born This Way had been released on the Sunday instead of the Friday, it would have been one heck of a chart battle that week. iirc, it was the week of the Brits and Someone Like You's first week at the top, and Price Tag was selling quite well that week too. I think BTW could have done it though, didn't it sell 60k in like 30 hours or spmething?
