There’s less than a month to go before we’ll be donning our party hats and getting set to blow out the candles (all 60 of them) as we celebrate 60 glittering years of the Official Singles Chart. To whet your appetite for this poptastic occasion, the Official Charts Company today reveal The Official Top 10 Biggest Selling Female Singles Artists Of All Time! Madonna tops the chart with a combined UK singles sales total of 17.8 million. The Queen Of Pop made her British chart debut in January, 1984 with Holiday, which peaked at Number 6. However it wasn’t until a year later that she scored her first Official Singles Chart Number 1 with Into the Groove, which incidentally, is her biggest ever selling track. To date, as a lead artist, Madonna has enjoyed 59 Top 10 hits (including 13 Number 1s). However, her Madge-sty might soon have a contender for her crown. With a combined singles sales tally as a lead artist of 11.4 million, Rihanna is at Number 2 in our chart. However, given that the 24-year-old Bajan superstar has sold 3 million singles in the last twelve months alone, if Riri continues selling singles at this rate, she could realistically overtake Madonna in the next two-and-a-half years. And she would still only be 27! Bonkers! Rihanna is of course known for her prolific collaborations, and while the above figures focus solely on her sales as a lead artist, if you were to add in her collaborations, that would bring her total to a staggering 15.1 million! Kylie Minogue, who is celebrating her 25th year in music this year, is at Number 3 in the chart with a combined singles sales total of 10.2 million copies. To date, Kylie has scored 35 Top 10 hits (including seven Number 1s). Her biggest selling track is 2001's Can’t Get You Out Of My Head. Whitney Houston, who tragically passed away in February of this year, is at Number 4 with a sales total of 8.5 million singles, while Lady Gaga has overtaken Britney Spears in the last four months to take fifth place with 7.329 million UK singles sales. ---- Rihanna inevitably hitting #1 makes me feel ill. :puke2:
October 26, 201212 yr Gaga at #5 is absolutely incredible, considering she is the most recent star to emerge in the list. Shocked she has overtaken Britney so soon too!
October 26, 201212 yr Author Official Charts@officialcharts In just 7 years, @rihanna has become the UK's 2nd biggest selling female singles artist of all time: http://goo.gl/CIhNE Makes you realise how incredible her sales have been in such a short period of time!
October 26, 201212 yr To think as well that is just sales as a lead artist, It is over 15 million single sales in total for Rihanna. She will become the 1st ever woman to to sell 20 million singles in the UK. I can already see diamonds being a million seller too, 4 weeks already in the top 4 without a video or performance and we know the video and X factor performance will push sales through the roof. She really is unstoppable.
October 27, 201212 yr Makes you realise how incredible her sales have been in such a short period of time! Not to mention having every cherry-picked album track count towards her total, not just the official singles... Yes, I know that applies to Madonna, Kylie etc. too, but their best sales era came before downloads, so the download demand for their back-catalogues is far lower.
October 27, 201212 yr Poor Christina never made it. :( Did not see Olivia-Newton John being in there!
October 27, 201212 yr A bit disappointed Pink couldn't sneak. Her music is streaks ahead of most of those in terms of quality.
October 27, 201212 yr Rihanna is probably at 14 million including all her songs. So there'll be two milestones. Her passing Madonna including all her songs, and then her passing Madonna only including songs as a lead artist. I'm honestly not sure if she'll manage the latter tbh. Madonna would be so much higher if her peak was in the digital age though. Her only massive hit that really benefitted from it is 4 Minutes. I rarely see many of her past material in the iTunes top 1000, whilst Rihanna usually has like 20 songs in there, which puts her at a big advantage. Edited October 27, 201212 yr by Eric_Blob
October 27, 201212 yr I rarely see many of her past material in the iTunes top 1000, whilst Rihanna usually has like 20 songs in there, which puts her at a big advantage. And normally the only reason her songs do enter is when they are reduced to 59p - all the recent times Like a Prayer has been reduced, it's re-entered the iTunes Top 200.

October 27, 201212 yr As people have said it's hardly a level playing field but GaGa should be #4 and closing in on Kylie this time next year.
October 27, 201212 yr As people have said it's hardly a level playing field but GaGa should be #4 and closing in on Kylie this time next year. I can't see her selling that much in the next year, think her diminishing returns will continue into the 'ARTPOP' era.
October 27, 201212 yr I can't see her selling that much in the next year, think her diminishing returns will continue into the 'ARTPOP' era. Really, 1.2 million is very doable. Her lead single should do 600k, her next 2 singles do 200k at least, an extra 100k for however many promo singles she releases + trickle sales from BTW and The Fame. ARTPOP is going to be more 'poppy' than the dark Born This Way so it should at least have similar sucess to it.
October 27, 201212 yr I can't see her selling that much in the next year, think her diminishing returns will continue into the 'ARTPOP' era. Diminishing compared to her other stuff, but still selling bucket loads compared to most other artists, Kylie and Whitney included :P Maybe next year is asking for a bit too much, but hopefully by the end of the ARTPOP era with however many singles are released she should do it.

'Artpop'? I've never heard of that.
October 27, 201212 yr If Lady Gaga releases 5 singles from her next album, say they sell an average of 200,000 per single, plus 200,000 from album tracks + her back catalogue. I think that's easily possible, especially if she has another massive hit like Born This Way or The Edge of Glory again (meaning she can have a couple of singles perfoming like You and I or Marry the Night and still reach 1.2 million in the year).
October 27, 201212 yr 'Artpop'? I've never heard of that. Of course you haven't. If it's not on your gigantic spreadsheet it doesn't exist in vidcapperworld.
